Dream Technologies

10 technologies that have changed the way we live ...

pretty interesting list...and of course i think they got the
NUMBAH ONE right...i'm surprised where PC's rank tho, i
woulda thought they'd be 1 & 2 or at least ranked
together.....

1. The Internet. This one seems like a no-brainer, but the
Net's unique strength is that no two people will agree on
why it's so important. The world's largest and most unruly
library, it's also a global news channel, social club,
research archive, shopping service, town hall, and
multimedia kiosk. Add to that the most affordable mass
medium ever, and a curse to anyone with a secret to keep.
Three-fifths of Americans now use the Net, but it remains to
be seen whether the connections to one another will
transform us, or prove that we'll never change.

4. Personal computers. Before IBM recast the desktop
computer from hobbyist's gadget to office automation tool in
1983 — followed by Apple's people-friendly Macintosh a
year later — a "minicomputer" was the size of a washing
machine and required a special air-conditioned room. But the
trained technicians who operated the old mainframes already
knew computers were cool: They could use them to play games,
keep diaries, and trade messages with friends across the
country, while still looking busy. Today, thanks to the PC,
we all look busy.

I would say this one is pretty important..

"3. Digital media. "The camera doesn't lie" went a
saying not heard much since the release of Photoshop 1.0 in
1990. Digitized audio, pictures, movies, and text let even
an amateur edit reality 'or conjure it from scratch' with a
keyboard and a mouse. A singer's bad notes, a model's
blemishes, or an overcast sky in a movie scene can be fixed
as easily as a spelling error. Just as important, digital
media can be copied over and over nearly for free, stored
permanently without fading, and sent around the world in
seconds. It rightly worries the movie and music industries,
but how do you put the genie back in the bottle if there's
no bottle anymore?"

I mean, you can twist and distort history any way you want
now, these days.. pretty sensational and scary at the same
time.

the fact that it's so immediate is amazing as well. i dunno
if you saw a few weeks ago 'AS IT HAPPENED' some lawyer was
shot point blank (thankfully not fatally) by a disgruntled
man outside of court...it was the scariest thing i'd ever
seen, and fascinating at the same time. it didn't seem
REAL....and it was being filmed by all these different TV
stations....woah!

Dream Stars

Fame sure is fickle. One day you're posing for the cover of
Vanity Fair, and the next you're auditioning for an Olsen
twins movie. The Hollywood landscape is littered with
would-be superstars who rode the zeitgeist straight into
obscurity. With that in mind, it wasn't easy choosing our
list of today's biggest stars. Candidates needed a
shelf-life more like a Twinkie than a carton of milk, and
had to have name recognition with both grade-schoolers and
grandmas. Some of our faves failed to make the cut (sorry
Denzel, Cameron, and Reese — there's always next year).
So, without further adieu, because Lord knows their careers
aren't getting any fresher, here are our picks for the Top
10 Celebrities in America...

uuuuughghg

look who's number one....NOT!!! freaking idiot media!!!!

1. Britney Spears, 21
She's played tonsil-hockey with Madonna and posed nearly
nekkid on major magazines. By now it's pretty darn obvious
Britney Spears is not that innocent. Adios, knee socks and
pigtails; hello, leather and lots of skin. Brit's
girl-on-girl kiss was just the latest stage in her
transformation from Justin Timberlake's virginal girlfriend
to a worldly, sensual woman of 21. With her all-American
looks (blond hair, blue eyes, and her perky, uh,
personality), the former Mouseketeer needn't worry her pipes
aren't the strongest. Britney's ability to adapt to her
public's desires has helped her defy critics who thought
she'd be just another flash in the pop-tartlet pan.

but the point is that it can all be digitally altered - that
is the power of modern CGI etc.

that is what is truely scary. anything nasty can easily
(well, relatively easily) be edited out - but just as
easily, replaced by something or someone else.

seeing as a big part of our sense of reality is based on
memory and in some way the recording of history, this is
tampering with reality in some way. :s

Dream Tunes

The 10 most influential popular music albums since Elvis

1) The Beatles, "Rubber Soul." Runner-up: The Beatles,
"Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." The Beatles are
the only artists here who get to be their own runner-up.
Really, how can you take seriously any "influential" list
that does not contain them? They are just about the biggest
thing ever to happen to popular entertainment since Elvis
and possibly since the invention of the phonograph. The only
question is which album. One could argue for "Meet the
Beatles," the album that turned the British Invasion into a
conquest. "A Hard Day's Night" went a long way toward
inventing the modern "media phenomenon." "Revolver" and
"Rubber Soul" are two sides of a single record, and "Pepper"
is the record that launched a million art-rock experiments,
most of them failed. I picked "Rubber Soul" because I think
it represents the perfect marriage of inspiration,
originality and craft. It helped launch much of what makes
rock music great: brains, melody and motion with no
compromise in any direction.

i'm a Nirvana fan but putting them AHEAD of the
Clash....ummmm i dunno about that

well, Stalin did a lot of that already. there's a great book
about it, showing the original pictures and the altered
ones.

The Commissar Vanishes

Michael Nyman wrote a musical piece based on this book.

but you are right - they could do anything they want these
days, yes.

Dream Movies

Screen classics: A critic's take on the top 10 American
movies.....

i've seen 8 of the top 10

this being my fav from the list

"Citizen Kane" (1941). Orson Welles' barely disguised
treatment of the life of newspaperman William Randolph
Hearst is a tragedy about a man who almost literally gains
the whole world and loses his soul. Welles tells the story
with such wit and bravado that the movie's serious
intentions don't really announce themselves until it's half
over. This is, almost despite its ambitions, a very funny
movie, filled with withering, still-potent commentary on the
state of American journalism. (Welles' followup film, "The
Magnificent Ambersons," is nearly its equal.)

i'm surprised Thin Red Line is at the top.....interesting
choice. i liked the movie but i don't consider it one of the
TOP TEN

Dis LINK is for the pink man NACHO! which are you most famil
with mon?

Dream Homes

10 homes most of us can only dream about ....

thank goodness for THIS HOUSE, good things came outta this
place

3. Thoreau's cabin, Concord, Mass. From the ridiculous to
the sublime: In the spring of 1845, Henry David Thoreau
built a one-room cabin overlooking Walden Pond, on a wooded
plot of land given to him by his friend Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Total budget: $28. He lived in the house for just two years,
but thanks to Walden, the book Thoreau wrote about his time
there, the cabin has ever since kept an unwavering hold on
the more frugal and self-reliant parts of the American
psyche; its spiritual heirs are everything from the Mini
Cooper to Northern California Zen centers to Real Simple
magazine.

this is prolly the house i MOST WANNA SEE in person *hint
hint travis*

5. Kaufmann House, Bear Run, Penn. Known as Fallingwater,
the weekend house that Frank Lloyd Wright designed for a
Pittsburgh department store magnate and his family in the
1930s was voted "Building of the 20th Century" by the
American Institute of Architects. It overflows with Wright's
architectural genius, as well as his legendary chutzpah.
Take the cantilevered concrete wings that hang dramatically
over the creek running through the property. They give the
house its famous horizontal thrust and sense of innovative
flair, but they've also had to be reinforced in various ways
over the years. As was often the case with Wright,
imagination raced well ahead of practicality. Still, most
architecture critics would happily give up a limb to call
this place home.

holy smokes i could totally see the first one as my
DESKTOP....absolutely beautiful!!!

love the plot summary -
A man named Francis relates a story about his best friend
Alan and his fiancée Jane. Alan takes him to a fair where
they meet Dr. Caligari, who exhibits a somnambulist, Cesare,
that can predict the future. When Alan asks how long he has
to live, Cesare says he has until dawn. The prophecy comes
to pass, as Alan is murdered, and Cesare is a prime suspect.
Cesare creeps into Jane's bedroom and abducts her, running
from the townspeople and finally dying of exhaustion.
Meanwhile, the police discover a dummy in Cesare's cabinet,
while Caligari flees. Francis tracks Caligari to a mental
asylum. He is the director! Or is he?

what EXACTLY is a SOMNAMBULIST?!??!

do you have your DVD list compiled?!?!??!

I actually started making the list because of you. but now
it's also a nice reminder of how much money I blow away on
film..

Theo van Gogh is a Dutch filmer.. I have no idea whether you
would like his stuff.. if your going for any Dutch director,
try something by Alex van Warmerdam - I only have "Abel",
seeing as that's his only film that has been produced on
dvd. :(

Hannah and her Sisters is very good, yes. on of my
favourites too. Crimes and Misdemeanours is very good too -
they call this films "Woody's novels".

The Brood - I liked it. but then I like Cronenberg. I think
he has interesting ideas that he follows through in a very
direct and methodical manner.

have you seen "Last Night" by Don McKellar? I mention this
because McKellar has played in ExistenZ and Cronenberg also
acts in "Last Night".. :)

sale this week, cos i spend more on DVD's than CD's these
days....

next week Escape From New York (Special 2 Disc version) come
out....eeeek!!! i must have it!!!

i thought it was THE theo van gogh!!! hahaha....i was like
he made a movie or what....i wasn't sure what it was.
heehehehe

i like cronenberg too, if i see it that cheap again i'll
pick it up. i've not seen last night...i have seen ExistenZ,
which i thought was kinda ridiculous...if you must know...it
was an interesting concept.

i'm glad you made a list, it's also a nice way to see what
you have.....once you start it...tis easy to keep up.

nanight lil Q....i have a lot to do before i go outta town!!

glad to see on the movies list that Citizen Kane isn't
number one... it always bugs me how there are certain movies
and albums which are ALWAYS the number one on these types of
lists... it's almost like critics just look through other
lits and see that a movie like Citizen Kane is number one
everywhere else, and so they put it number one on theirs...
it's nice to see a critic actually do it a little
differently...

theu couldn't have said Nosferatu, cause the list is
"american films"... and while Sunrise was made in America...
Nosferatu was not... Murnau is one of the best directors of
all time... Nosferatu is the shit
