Canon EOS 300D question

So, my dad and I decided to get one of these together. My
old Minolta is kinda boring. Compared to other simpler cams
and their 3x, 10x optical zoom, what does the included
18-55mm lens equal to?

Alright, we bought it today along with a Canon 75-300mm zoom
lens. Charging the battery now. One annoying thing though,
the guy at the store sold me the wrong type of memory card,
so no photocising until tomorrow when get the card
replaced.

..and to answer my own question, the 18-55mm lens equals to
about 2-3x zoom according to the store.

Well, atleast I can play around with the 300mm zoom tonight
:)

that looks like a real nice camera! i don't think i can get
into digital photography, maybe i'm too traditional...i'll
just stick with my trusty Minolta HTsi.

now if i could only afford one of those hasselblad medium
format cameras! :)*drools*

I can't wait to try all the different manual settings. I
don't think I've ever used a camera before that offered
manual focus. Pretty scary huh?

i just got a FUJI FinePx S3000, it's really great.

i got a free 64mb card with it, so i have that and a 16mb
one for fewer pictures.

i am gonna try it out with my kitty kots, and later with
people when i get more adept. there are so many menu's on
the camera and i've not completed reading the 100+ page
owners manual

i wanna experiment most with night photo's ... like sunsets,
lightning, etc

Heheh. Elusive, I'm insured up to my ears, so go ahead.
Also, Digital Rebel is the same model as 300D. Different
name in EU and America.

LeCoeur, I was considering the Fuji Finepix S5000 (10x zoom)
and Olympus Camedia C750, also 10x zoom. Then my dad got
interested in getting a proper camera too, so we decided to
get the Canon.

6.3Mpixel..mmM!!

I'm in love with this cam! I've been trying it indoors for
an hour now. I can't wait until the winter is over. It's
frikkin pitch black outside when I leave for work and when I
go home. Weekend is here soon though, maybe I can get a
couple of hours practice outside.

I understand now why the shutter speed on my phone cam is so
long (it's easy to take blurry shots with it). I set the EOS
to 4000 and pointed at a light bulb. The image turned out
nearly black. Man that's fast.

sorry, must have missed this thread. until now...

yeah... i finally got the cam after some "trouble", along
with a 512 Mb CF card. Bought the body only, w/o the 18-55
lens, so I have no idea how it would perform, but after what
I've read it's a great buy, considering it only costs about
$100.

my other EF lenses are fully compatible with the 300D
tho.... except for 1.6x factor... it's a great addition to
my normal SLR EOS 33 whatsoever....

the image quality of 300d is the same as the 10d, that's OK
for me. im sure you can comprimise the lack of features in
300d with photo experience skills.

paco: which one of the three models of 75-300 did you buy?

offline Paco from Gothenburg (Sweden) on 2003-12-04 12:36 [#00977193]

The III model. It was 3000kr, 2500 for me since I bought a
camera also. The packaging doesn't say if it's USM or DC,
but the DC is cheaper so mine is probably the USM.

The box says:
EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III

I think there's a IS version out there also. The little
18-55 is great, but you can't get one separately, not new
anyway.

Oh and the image quality is smoooooth :) In the LCD anyway,
I haven't installed the software yadda yadda yet.

late.

Turns out we have a stable of EOS users at work. No one with
a digital one though. Also, I got this skylight filter
today, Hoya 1b.

Long exposure times are fun to try in different situations.
This was taken from my kitchen. I put the EOS on my table
and ran with auto. It settled for 13s of exposure. This is
so amazing, no flash and a pitch black room.

get a UV-filter for your lens to protect it from scratches
and dust. it's far much cheaper to replace a filter than a
lens in case of an accident.

300D is a great cam! much more solid and heavier than I
thought. it look kinda plastic on pictures. 6 megapixels
will keep you entertained for a while :-)

the ef 50mm 1.8 II is a cheap lens to have in your kit
too.... extremely good for low-light conditions... you dont
even need a flash when you're inside. if you have money, get
the 1.4 version.....

I'll get more filters when there's actually daylight again
and I'm outdoors alot more. I'll just use the Hoya for now.

-- end of swedish language --

offline Paco from Gothenburg (Sweden) on 2003-12-12 10:59 [#00988214]

Det står i manualen att skramlet kommer ifrån sensorn som
kollar kamerans läge, tydligen helt normalt. Om du tiltar
den så vet kameran att du tar bilder i porträtt position.
Det har nog att göra med auto rotate funktionen där
kameran automatiskt vänder bilderna rätt i LCDn.

Ska ta lite julbilder i centrala stan imon så ska passa på
o fråga om glappet i affären.

Det glappar ordentligt. Bilden i sökaren rör sig om jag
ska justera fokus manuellt.

I already bought it, Phobia. About 3 weeks before they
lowered the price from 6495:- to 4995:-

I'm investigating proper telephoto lenses for the summer.

So far it's between these:
Sigma EX 50-500, 80-400 OS or..
Canon 100-400, 300/4, 70-200/2.8

The sigmas look really nice. I'll have to wait for the
80-400 to be released and tested first. I'll probably order
from the US.
