From the beginning I always bought my music on cd only... Now I'm a little older and wiser and i realize, i guess, music is so much better when you have it on vinyl. It sounds more 'real'.... So I'm serious about it:
I'll buy a record player next week!
Now, how about you? Do you mostly listen to cd's or vinyl? What type of record player do you have? What are the things i have to pay attention to when buying a record player? Are there several types available, not TOO expensive...?

i have 3 turntables. a pair if vestax pdx-a1s for pretending i am a superstar on, and a nice one that was about £200 for listening on. forget the brand though, its not written on the turntable itself.

I use a pair of these babies. You could get a lot better "listening" table for the price, but as I use mine primarily for DJing (although they are better for listening than the Aiwa one on the downstairs hifi- as DS9mm said- cheap and nasty...) they're what I have for listening too. Pretty good sound quality given that their not really made for listening. I use Stanton 505 carts/styli and again, whilst made primarily for DJing, they're suprisingly good for listening use too.

I found my record player in a pile of stuff during fall moving week. It folds into a suitcase and looks like a smashed computer. It kind of plays music though, if you don't mind the static that sounds like an extra set of back-up singers. The joy of it is that you can buy $2 records all you like and not worry about what they're doing to your needle.

i'd listen to more vinyl if there was a good vinyl store near me.
however, i do take a listen now and then. i have a Numark TT-1510 with pitch altering. i also have a Optimus PA stereo mixer with crossfade, mic input and three channels so if i ever get a keyboard i'll probably be able to start DJ'ing.

you could probably find a perfectly decent, cheap turntable at a pawnshop or a flea market or something... so long as the motor works fine, and the stylus isn't shot to shit... and i suppose it's probably a good idea to get one that has a removable stylus, so that you can replace it in the event that it does break down...

if you're not planning to be a dj. there is no use for å "proffesional" type turntable. a decent hi-fi one will give sufficient listening pleasure. maybe a rega planar. they look nice and sound superb. a good quality pick-up is highly reccomended. you'll never want to buy cd's again!

i have to agree with vlari - if you're not Dj'ing, then you really don't need a professional brand-name turntable, just something from a pawn shop will do the job.
i got my Numark TT-1510 for about 80 bucks used at a pawnshop, with a good-condition needle cartridge included for free. Nice.

i have a stanton s100 it's a quite good turntable for djing and for listening.
I have experienced that YosepH from Luke Vibert has some problems with my stanton needle (for scratch) and i had to replace it with a normal needle so it went ok. I had a lot of jumps while listening on it.

laurent garnier had a trick with the technics sl1200/1210 where he'd put the pick up upsidedown, and used an ashtray to raise the record sufficiently. i tried it, and it worked in a fashion, but it's difficult to keep the record centered. it's not a good method. i think some vestax dex have the ability to reverse the direction and thus play records backwards.

I was very dissapointed after visiting nearly every electronic store NOT A SINGLE record player was for sale, anywhere. They only could order it for me, it's a Sony. And, they had technics turntables for about 500 euros. A little too much for me.
Is Sony a reliable brand for a record player..?

I have a Sony PS-LX500 and it's a good, solid player for home listening. It's automatic so therefore not suitable for DJ'ing. I don't think this model is in production any more though, as it looks quite old (I found it in the trash).
