download a bootdisk from bootdisk.com

boot

use fdisk to delete all partitions
create new partitions

and if you want, format the partitions

but if you install linux it's possible to delete/create
partitions from the setup program.

i dunno, but i recommend backing up EVERYTHING you have
first - also make sure everything you have is compatible
with Linux, software / driver-wise.

oh i'm sorry - i'm sure you know that.

What distro ya installing? Red Hat is what I've been using
but they're going to stop releasing it except for the
expensive corporate flavor so I'm looking for alternatives.

I've been thinking of trying Gentoo - it seems to be up to
date and not all weird and unstandardly fucked up like
Mandrake - there's always something minor, annoying and
unfixable in Mandrake like fucked up font behaviour in X.

Red Hat for 'hobbyists' is continuing as the Fedora distro.
I haven't tried it yet.

All the cool kids use Debian.

im trying CRUX. i want a real slim version that i can just
build on myself. still didnt get time to install it today,
ended up finding an open source DOS (www.freedos.org) and
playing around with that for a little while.

CRUX goes on tomorow.

just check if you your dosbootdisk version can handle ntfs
partitions (if you have some) then, like phob said, create
new partitions, i recommend an extra partition for your
files and one for the system.

Isn't Debian still using the 2.0.36 kernel? ;-)

I started installing Gentoo last night - already I can tell
it's faster and less crapped-up than Red Hat. The Portage
system is great - if you don't have the package locally, it
retrieves it for you, resolves dependencies, and builds it
from source if necessary. It spozed be better than apt-get
but I'm not familiar with apt-get soooo....

The installer consists of a bootable CD that boots to a
command line - you have to fdisk, make filesystems, untar
some shit, compile a kernel (fortunately there's an
auto-config option that uses your detected hardware to
configure the build), manually configure your bootloader and
network files, run xf86config... not for grandmas. And this
was the stage 3 "easy" install!

So far I give it a 10/10 for technical users - the distro,
website and documentation are very slick and well thought
out. I read through the install doc and pretty much typed
everything verbatim from the examples, substituting kernel
versions etc where necessary. I give it a 1/10 for non
technical users though - it would make them shit and piss
with fear.

----------------------------------------------
Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot
floppy that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers.
DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents
of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an
appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data
destruction.

Heh, the Debian folks are cautious - but not that bad!

They are at 2.2.22 at the moment!

gentoo is my favourite distro. I used to be a
debian user, but gentoo takes the debian mentality one step
further. It compiles all of your software from the source,
optimising the use of your hardware! *dance dance dance*

Ya know I had to track down and install three different
libraries so far that KDE needed but Portage didn't account
for. Not only that but I had to play guessing games with
google to figure out the actual package titles from the
names of the missing libraries.

Not impressed at all. :-(

On the bright side, now that it's running a gui I can see
it's only about a quintillion times faster than Red Hat 9 on
the same hardware. :-)
