I've noticed in turntabilism, there seems to be quite big business involved in signature editions of hardware endorsed by certain tablists or whole scratch crews... this can range from the manufacturer giving the artist money/gear to use their name to the artist actively collaborating with the company's R&D department.
Now, only about 1 in 5 hip hop fans I know actually has any decks & mixer, let alone the higher end sort of kit that is signature edition. Compare this to electronica where past polls have shown fans who don't make tracks are in the minority... Surely there is some sort of market in the synths/programs area for artist endorsed or better still, designed with artist's creative input, gear? I know some IDM artists do communicate with gear/software manufacturers to suggest features for future editions, just wondering why there aren't any. I know they do the odd bit of patch work (Richard Devine worked on absynth 2, AFX did some drum machine presets...) but that's not in the same league as say, an Ae drum machine or a Boards of Canada synth.
Considering what a mad completist your average IDM fan is, even those who don't make music would by Luke Vibert endorsed Reason, just for the sake of having all his stuff.

It is a different area though...in order for a synth to be endorsed by ae, it would have to replicate the sounds of ae otherwise it wouldn't sell...then it would mak ae's sound too common. A lot of IDM is developing little tricks that differentiate you from the crowd...if you make it easy to replicate it fucks you over :P

noo that would be horrible.. itll be like carl cocks dj studio 20cz.3 blabla... itll commercialize.. i also think the market is too small to make much profit... esp with softsynths, everyone will pirate em

What I meant was a like an "improved" version of an existing bit of kit that Autechre use, such as the MC-202 but with some slight changes in interface (knob positioning), appearence (polished silver with cyan lettering say) and maybe an extra feature that makes it that much easier to get a sound like theirs (built in ring modulator and extra dial to control it). Other examples, 808 state edition roland tr-808 or a Boards of Canada SH-101.
I know those are all old bits of equipment I've mentioned (well, they could re-issue them... ;) but you see the idea.

I think that would be a funky idea...some hardware endorsed...but most of the people who make IDM (for want of a better term) use software for everything as custom hardware is expensive as it is without endorsement fees on top :P

With regard to the market being too small... there are lots of acts in more traditional music that use the same synths etc. prodigy and chemical brothers both have a lot of respect for AFX, Everyone rips off BoC... LFO produced for bjork & depeche mode etc. these would be the people buying the stuff too- not just amateur "hobby" musicians.

BOC's sound is one of the best I must say. I'm not a huge fan but maxima really raised my eyebrows. I should pick up that other one (Alphagetti or whatever ?)

Oh yeah, I meant to mention that there is signature series moog theremins, but that is just a name on it- no different functionality and the "signature" is only Bob Moog's...
