... 'linear'
thats right.
In my opinion, a lot of electronic artists are too linear. Esp Autechre, in my opinion every record is just the previous album, only more or less changed.
Im not saying you cant progress, but id love to see aphex doing some old school ambient, or maybe a digeridoo kinda thing.
I dont know why im typing this, it just came to mind.

yup that's the one. I haven't really tried him properly but it's wierd stuff. I believe the guy is totally opposed to 'primitive african style tribal repetition'. Sounds like a bit of an arrogant bastard to me but his work might be interesting.
didn't richard host a stockhausen related event at the london barbican a while back?

indeed, Autechre are a bit too similar to themselves. (and i'm not even talking about Boards of Canada...!!)
but not all artists are like this. i think Aphex Twin is different every time, not linear at all - it's even the less "linear" artist i know.

that's academic jibberish about that african stuff, means he thinks dance is stupid and idm therefor too, but not really cause appartly aphex was invited for this stockhausen thing..
what was funny: i saw a documentary on 'new' music, only it was from '97, had interviews with squarepusher, dj spooky and stockhausen among others. anyway, stockhausen said, on this new music (idm): these artists dont see how they're are only a small part in the development of music. and on the other hand he said, about his own composition, gesange des jungelings: that piece of music was a important turningpoint in the history of music (because it was electronic, and blahblah). anywho: that made me laugh
does anyone agree with me that to cure a weakling child might be a allution on that gesange des jungeling? the way the singing is deformed.
i learned in music history there are 4 ways tones in music can be modified: volume, length, hight, and tembre (sound). gesange das jungeling was a turning point because it strived to be completely free on the tembre. after the second vienna school had tried to brake away from any restrictions in hight, with the 12 tone stuff.

Current 93. Did five industrial/noisescape albums, then a few folk albums, with an ambient one mixed inbetween. Then suddenly an album of just piano pieces, then some more ambient, followed by one purely done on harmonium, guitar and glockenspiel. And then a bit of dark ambient, another piano record and the new one (judging on two live tracks I saw the other week) is sounding decidedly folky again.
There you go.

so.. autechre's development is too linear for you..?
I can't believe that you're actually thinking about something like this.
who gives a fuck whether it's linear or not. how an artist develops is personal to each of them - if you do it right, you do not actually choose whether your development is linear or not. it's what comes natural to you.

Hmm, I 'd say Aphex was one of the most diverse artists around myself... I don't like Smojphace much, but even that is a new direction. He's done all sorts- ambient, drill and bass, minimalist piano, hardcore, rave, hip hop related (windowlicker), downtempo electro, even some housey dancey type stuff... to call his progress linear seems strange. I bet back when AB3 came ot you couldn't of predicted what his next release would be like, no more than people accurately predicted what Drukqs would be like after Windowlicker.
Sure BoC haven't changed drastically, but to be honest I'd be happy with another 4 albums of MHTRTC type tracks.

yeah, I like artists who jump around with styles and stuff... a major reason why I love stuff like DJ Shadow, but basically all sample based music, is that there are so many styles mashed together...

wait... youre complaining that artists dont develop more, and grow... yet alls you want is a SAW III... which would merely be a rehash of his previous stuff, just "changed more or less"

So what you're saying is that their next progression is obvious. You'd rather they swapped about randomly like Aphex.
No two albums in a row have been the same style. Yet there's soem styles that have two albums.
I too would like SawIII

All David Tibet has to do now is some cock rock or jangle pop and he's got all the bases covered.
I like Autechre's ''linearity''... they're sort of predictable, yeah... I knew what to expect with Gantz and Draft... but it's still different enough to be interesting.
Aphex Twin is the antithesis of linear. AndFrank Zappa, there's one helter skelter mofo.

aphex twin - linear?
sorry, but i don't think going from ambient to psychotic jungle tomfuckery is really a straight line. or maybe it is? ah who knows - time is but a perception of the mind.
in 100 years from now, people will pay no attention to the amount of time between the first and last autechre album - they'll just try to catch the core feel that is autechre. that's really all that's remembered of a musician after they're gone.
but that's just my opinion. did i mention I am quite stoned right now?
