www.hackthissite.org

(Appologies if this site's been posted already!)

Been on this for a day and currently ranked around 700 - But
still climbing!

The site's run by the legendary Spiffomatic from cDc.

Hours of fun!

This site is brilliant cos you can really get into it
without any real knowledge of hacking, just a little common
sense - And there's always people on hand to help you out...
Best web site I've found in ages.

yep, wikipedia.org has good descriptions of hackers and
crackers. I also read about this crazy virus called (slammer
I think) which replicated so fast it almost killed the whole
internet or something. Hacker just originally meant elite
programmer/ someone with lots of computer knowledge. Elite
is where l33t came from.

They're actually trying to get that distinction recognised
in law now. I'm interested in cyber law (international law
regarding internet use) and it's quite funny some of the way
things work. There's a fair amount of legal knowledge
required of sys admins in order to set the system up to
allow for a successful prosecution in the event of it being
hacked.

That's great - I didn't know there was a legal effort around
this. Is this in the UK or somewhere else?

Prosecuting the bad guys is difficult. I have had to collect
evidence several times regarding successful and unsuccessful
computer break-in attempts, and to my knowledge no one has
ever been convicted.

Once the trail leaves your own country, it's nearly a lost
cause.

I think it was the uk, can't remember which of the two
textbooks I saw it in (one was US/international, the other
was uk.) Can't find it at the moment and I have to get off
the PC for a bit, but if I find it again I'll let you know.
Roughly a third of my degree is computing law.

While it was around, the Zebulun challenge at
www.cyberarmy.com (now www.cyberarmy.net) used to be pretty
fun. The new "Sered" challenge should be interesting when
it arrives.

don't worry... many great thinkers seem to think the
internet is at an extremely early stage of development.
Something even better than this will come up, and if "soccer
moms" turn it into the quality of tv, there will surely be
many various evolutions with different qualities and
natures, sort of like linux vs windows or independent
videogame creators vs popular crappy ones. From what I've
read of connection machines, it might be possible to have an
entire internet on one computer eventually.

Level 2's actually really easy - He's hidden the password in
an encrypted file but neglected to upload it.
You have to get there from level 1 (do them in sequence) but
all you do is press submit on that one - You don't even need
a password - Then you see this security flaw that helps you
with level 3...
There's loads of info on the forums about those levels.
Good luck!

i'm stuck on level 6

i tried using the help articles but some of those hackers
obviously spent all their time coding and very little time
improving their reading/writing skills.

I'm guessing that's on the basic missions?
Level 6 on realistic is getting pretty hardcore!
Level 6 Basic is actually one of the simplest - You just
have to figure out the encryption system yourself - It's
quite simple when you sus it (although the last character
caused quite a headache!).
Try typing in AAAAAAA and see what it's doing...
More of a brainteaser that one.

that is a really common misconception - and i have refuted
it numerous times (at least once) on the board before

a hacker is usually someone who illegally (and someimtes
legally) "hacks" or explores, modifies, or just messes
around with networks and computer systems.

crackers deal more with code and programs - focusing more on
modifying programs and mutating them to try and achieve
something new with the program, or unlock hidden features,
etc.

there are both bad and good members of each group.

that's the beauty of the net, it's a blank canvas for
people, groups, organisations to put information on an open
web where anyone can get on and explore, i personally like
it.
yes, i hate some of the shitty javascript exploits to fuck
up people's general surfing experience, but it is a god
structure nonetheless at this point.
AI is becoming serious these days, self-organised content
management etc, we're gonna see the internet clean itself
up....and become a very valueable resource.
personally, free porn galore (great) free information about
literally everything (even better) and of course interacting
with people across the globe....oh and warez heehee

Yeah it is quite tough - Even experienced network security
pro's are saying that!
The WWW Forum on that site has hints for just about every
level though, so it's a wicked site to learn on.
