hey im new to this board, so um hiya first of all. so yeah. ive been making electronic music for a while now, and have recently tried to start making some drill n bass/breakbeat but normally what i make comes out sounding... well... not good lets say. i just wanna make crazy glitchy breaks like squarepusher and afx (like the stuff of red hot car and 54 cymru beats) so anyone got any sudjestions on what software to use? at home i have fruity loops, acid, reason, and sound forge and at school ive got digital performer and sound edit. o yeah, and price is not a problem (*cough*kazaa*cough*) any help would be appreciated thanx

i dunno much about programs, i just use a wav editor. but a good way to make drill i guess is to make the bpm really high and spread the beats out

you need a good midi editor. The one in cubase kicks ass.

As roygbiv said, doubling or even quadrupling the BPm and then spreading the "normal" beats out accordingly allows you to do some mental drum programming. For the crazilly fast bits you need very fast attack and decay on a snare, as short a sound as possible without it just sounding like a speaker click.

yeah ive been recording midi drum tracks at around 100 bpm and then speeding it up to 200, and it sounds all right, but i guess one thing i need to do is find some shorter sounds, since if i make it go really fast, it just gets slurred. also, where is the slicer in fruity loops, im not as familiar with that as other software, except that i know next to nothing about reason, i just have it so i can say "oooooh i use reason!" blech

I'd just say the same as what's been said already.
Create a break'ish beat and boost the tempo a lot.

no no no, you don't speed up the beats.
ok it's like this. 120 bpm 0...0...0...0... would be like this 240 bpm 0.......0.......0......0......

roygbiv: yeah i do that, but i also record slower so i can more accurately throw shit in there, instead of just jumping from key to key without thinking what the hell in doing

The midi editor on Cubase is king in my mind. But thats a good point about using sounds with a quick attack and little decay. Fucking shit up in Soundforge is good too.

This is a Cubase place, then? I prefer Logic. Mainly through experience (Cubase has, without fail, buggered up my files every time I've used it, whilst Logic is perfect). But yes, you can just zoom in so you see 192ndths of beats, then just click in that portion of a snare, and then copy/paste it. It's how I've done my drill stuff in Logic.

hm seems logic is mac only, or from what i see, which is a prob since the macs are school comps, thus i cant get my own software on them. im guessing i should go the cubase root then?

I use Logic for PC and absolutely detest Macs. So it's not just for Mac. They're just not doing any newer versions for PC, since Apple bought them out (or some similar thing).

Lots of careful MIDI and audio editing, as Phresch has stated, is the way to that sound you cherish. Begs the question though: why would you want to do something that 1,000's have already done? Try something different like granular synthesis...oh nevermind, AE has 100% market share on that one...how about buffer-manipulation...oh, that's been done too. Sorry, I'm no help.
