album of the year

outkast

this fan review and the urb cover story have made me so
excited for this album. 'aquemini' was my favorite album of
1998 and i believe 'stankonia' was my favorite of 2000
(maybe it was radiohead).

before you post just read the review. i marvel at outkast.
every album they put out is so daring and inventive, and yet
does something most electronica envelope-pushers fail to do
(exception being prefuse 73): they make it fun and an
ENJOYABLE listen as well.

what's the name of the track with the electro beat? i dunno,
i only heard 20 seconds of it, but it was quite good.

ive heard it. i think i like speakerboxxx more, but andres
side is definitely worth a listen.

wouldnt be my album of the year (dont think i could list one
if i tried) but its definitely one worth recognition/a
listen for the facts you just said.

outkastonline.com has clips of the new songs apparently, but
i'm waiting to hear the albums in whole next week. i've
already heard big boi's "flip flop rock" which is very
electro, and dre's "she lives in my lap".

I'm very interested in this. Especially since there's
electro influences... and, well, because it's OutKast.

thank you for not making a crap, irrelevant comment

outkast have been doing electro for a while now (1996).. i
think they're very interested in it, but not in following it
exclusively (still mostly organic and live). i think they
share more than a little in common with fellow atlanta
native scott herren.

Hehe..

They continue to put out interesting and refreshing stuff.
In intereviews, they seem to have pretty wide tastes in
music (I think in one, they mentioned enjoying Kraftwerk),
and I think that's why a lot of their music has more staying
power. Quality.

I love old electro funk stuff. Bambaataa, Newcleus, etc.. My
friend and I were playing his VERY old tape of Hancock's
"Sound System" the other day, actually.

Buck 65 - Tonky Honkin' Blues

As the song title suggests, wicked AND weird.

yea they actually made an update of "trans-europe express"
called "trans DF express" on the dungeon family album

kraftwerk is one of their least eclectic influences.. they
namecheck some diverse and obscure stuff.. they're really
deep into music and it shows on their albums

btw newcleus rock! i love "jam on it" especially. i think
that track would blow some people's minds on here,
especially if they knew when it was released.

Jam on It is great. The 8 minute version is way better than
the album version though, just because it's longer.

"Jam on Revenge", "Make It Live", and "Let's Jam" are all
good, too.

Lucky year for me. Very few disappointments. Lots of great
stuff. The new Silver Mt. Zion is up there for album of the
year too, as is the new Mogwai. The new Massive Attack is so
so, but not to the point that I'm disappointed.

Have you seen massive attack play this year? The visuals
are nice but the music is soooooo boring! 3D was a shit
graffiti artist anyway, he's a pushy arrogant twat that has
forced the other creative people away.

i agree with Atgmartin's disappointment point entirely...
Radiohead's 'electronic' attempts seem pretty annoying to
me.

as for electronic albums then i have to say Draft 7.30.
among rock albums so far my vote goes to Type O Negative -
'Life Is Killing Me'... i enjoy it a lot, may be because
this summer i was really longing to hear something melodic,
simple, easy and different from a lot of the electronic
stuff i've been listening, and i found it with this album.

but there are still a few releases mentioned here that i
haven't heard yet, so i may discover some more worthy stuff.

i'm very currious about this album.

i never have been able to exactly 'get into' outkast though.
i don't know why either, i agree with just about every
review i read, and when i listen to an album i rarely hear
anything i don't like. but, for some reason i just don't
ever really seem to get excited over any of their songs.

out of curriosity; what exactly is the justification for
splitting it basically into two solo albums under the
outkast name? i've read that there's no bad blood between
them, but it's a little wierd to have so little colaboration
on a 'team' effort like this isn't it?

well did you read the review? they're taking two totally
separate musical directions

the urb interview sheds some light on this.. andre's album
is music he's been writing, mostly on guitar, piano, and
keyboard, that hasn't fit in with the outkast style. he says
he's bored with hip-hop.

i read the initial post in that link. and it seemed like a
pretty descent short review of each individual track. i was
just a little currious about the motivation behind the album
as a whole, and being on my 56k here at home puts a damper
on my surfing around the web looking for reviews habit.

if the urb's review is online i'll prolly check it on
monday.

they dont confine themselves stylistically at all. Saying
that though, I listened to that new track (the dancey one) &
it was kinda naff imo

what's this about tribe? are they back together?

the love movement letdown, followed by their split, followed
by their equally dissapointing solos was very symbolic of
the death of my innocence, and youth. trully a very sad

in one of my typical drunken rants of a couple of years ago
i likened tribe to simon and garfunkel, and i still stand by
that comparison. S&G were never really innovators, but they
very much perfected their own style, and there's an
undeniable staying power to what they did. they were never
really overly political in their messages, but the music
they made was very representative of the time in which it
was made. and, their individual styles, and strongpoints
were very different, yet the sum of their two parts created
something greater.

i think tribe did very much the same for hip-hop. all of
their releases pre-LM were damn near flawless in the genre.
they never really pushed any technological or stylistic
boundaries, yet everything they released was hip-hop
perfection.
