Favourite album of the year:
Wintermute - Widescreen

One of my favourite ambient albums, is this.

Other favourites:
Current Ninety Three - Hypnagogue
Radiohead - Hail To The Thief
Laura Musgrave - Sparking
Autechre - Draft 7.30
Skye - Elliptic
Aphex Twin - 26 Mixes For Cash

Biggest Disappointment:
Blur - Think Tank

I thought this album was going to be shite. And it was a
thousand times worse than I was expecting.

Other disappointments:
Humanoid - Sessions 84-88
Stakker - Eurotechno

Early FSOL stuff I'd been waiting for for a couple of years.
And, the Zeebox tracks on the end of Sessions aside, the
rest is a bit dull, really. It's a shame more of the Zeebox
tracks weren't on it. There are about 60 all together, and
they show how Dougans was, at a young age, easily equal to
RDJ in terms of musical genius.

I agree...I have high expectations of this album after
having listened to the samples on planet-mu.com.

Abomination Street and Marty's Tardis are good from what
I've heard so far! I'll probably buy this one, unless I
dislike the rest :o)

they are doing that.. but they nailed it on this one

I hate the fact that rap artists feel obligated to bookend
their albums with 'Tros those being the intro and the
outro.. and the middle portion is spinkled liberally with
skits and interludes.. that's my speakerboxxx complaint

the first two andre tracks.. I love that he dove right in
and went full force lounge act with that.. but midway thru
he starts taking the piss out of his own song copping out
for two reasons.. - he couldnt come up with anything else ..
- he didnt want to lose the hood niggas that as he put it in
his final track.. weren't ready for ATLiens..

his drum/n bass drum patterns are too brief.. I rapid
variation is key in forming those kinds of patterns (see:
spread and the untitled intrumental (my favorite things)

repetition and incompletion plague the beats and the lyrics

the end of pink & blue goes on looping that string section
part.. but it's only like 2 bars.. it's as if to say hey
look! those are real violins! and I wrote that! here
listen again! but it's too short to amount to even a
measured accomplishment

I disagree with the thing pitchfork said regarding the fact
that big boi's absence hurt the love below. he can do fine
without him.. I dont like his style anyway.. the love below
needed more work

unfinished verses.. falling back on the chorus too much

dracula's wedding .. although one of my favorites is "quite
literal" (pitchfork) and it shouldn't be

his lyrics need work
(like pharell williams he makes great music and his
influences are clear.. but his lyrics are just far enough
under par in certain instances that it's a bit frustrating..
it's like they need a second opinion to push them into the
'great' level)

none of this really applies to "hey ya!"

I like andre's skits.. I thought they were funny.. but
they're unneccessary.. I understand stankonia is like 74059%
skit and I've avoided buying it in large part for this
reason

I'll come with a more lucid and thorough

offline theo himself from +- on 2003-09-28 23:35 [#00882297]
Points: 3348 Status: Regular

and more thought-out description of what I felt were this
albums shortcomings later.. .. I do like it though and I
recommend it

now xltronic.. I know they're black, but don't worry.. one
of them likes squarepusher! (and it shows!) and one track
sounds like caustic window
!

kidding

From what I've heard thus far, Ulrich Schnauss's 'A

there's still 2 months to go.

ok, you make some good points, i'll have to reply in detail
next time i listen to his album.

as for intros and outros, i agree they're rarely necessary
or add much. though some of outkast's past intro tracks have
been really lovely. i'm glad dre's disc doesn't do that.
there's a short song at the start and a long song at the
end. outkast tend not to do outro tracks anyway.

i can't really see what you mean about the midway through
thing w/ dre, i think he was himself through and through on
this disc. didn't hear any pandering and it's kind of weird
to even consider this huge change of an album as pandering
to anyone in the hood. as i said, i'll reply again after i
listen some more.

you're wrong about the outkast skit ratio thing.. what a
weird thing to say. they do have skits but they're well done
and only make up i'd say 10% of each album. they fit in but
they don't NEED to be in. maybe 1 or 2 per album really add
something special.

andre's one of my favorite lyricists of any genre but since
he stuck to one topic on this album basically--love--and is
sangin' instead of rappin', he's not up to his usual quality
of lyrics. i think this is a learning curve for him maybe.
so i can see what you're saying. he's definitely doing
better than pharrell but not as good as mos def.

next muthafucka to say HTTT feels my metal!

do you like any hip-hop? you don't have to, i'm just curious
because 1) hip-hop is quite often as exciting and creative
as electronica, and 2) FSOL are obviously very influenced by
it, even sampling people like run-dmc in their music. not to
say that everyone should instantly agree with their favorite
artists' favorite artists, i know i don't always.

dunno if i'd call it my album of the year just yet, but
Speakerboxxx was definately making me MOVE! right now of the
two disc's Big Boi's is definately my fav, and while i like
several songs off Andre 3000's The Love Below, it just
doesn't resonate with me like Speakerboxx. maybe it's
because he's gone off in such a new direction it's gonna
take a while for me to develope a taste for it.

i didn't see a wrong move on either disc tho.....it was
seemless!

Bought it yesterday after having heard Hey Ya on mtv2. What
a great song!

I'm slightly dissapointed by the album though. Speakerboxxx
i basically don't like at all (only listened to it once,
will probably not listen to it again). The Love Below is
nice... but none of the other songs seem as good as Hey Ya
to me. Maybe it needs more time... but even so... all the
other songs are just completely different from Hey Ya :-p
Quite a misleading single if you ask me.

All the interludes are very annoying. Two of them made me
laugh ('god' and 'good day good sir', but í'll probably be
bored of them pretty soon). Not a bad album, but also not
what i was expecting at all!

what do you think of "reset"? i think it's one of the
darkest and most beautiful songs i've ever heard. cee-lo's
verse gives me chills. it's not just the lyrics, which are
simple but effective, but the way they're said. everytime i
hear it i come close to tears.

big boi is an amazing producer. strip away the vocals on his
album and it'd be a contender for one of the year's best
electronica albums.

"that song Hey Ya or whatever it is, is definitely one of
the best singles I've heard in a long time...
"

I agree! Definitly the best single of the year.

"if the whole album was similar to that"

Well it's not. I'd almost go as far as to say it doesn't
really fit with the rest of the album. Maybe it's just me,
but that song sounds completely different from all the other
tracks on The Love Below.
But please don't let that stop you from giving the album a
good listen :-) It's really excellent! Just a long list of
fantastic songs, unlike anything i've ever heard before.
Very happy and uplifting. Until the last couple of songs,
where the sound suddenly changes into something much more
jazzy and cool. One of those last tracks (#17... it appears
to be an untitled one?!) could have easily been written by
the squarepusher.

And despite what i said earlier in this thread, the
speakerboxxx-disc is also growing on me somewhat. The tracks
ghettomusick & reset are really nice. And Flip Flop Rock is
just amazing! Out of the entire 2CD-set, that one is
probably my second favourite song, right behind Hey Ya.
