ok, well i don't fuck with gradaddy or anything that sounds
like them (most of today's indie/college rock), but both
speakerboxxx and the love below stomp the shit out of HTTT.
while HTTT has some weak moments like parts of/ideas in "we
suck young blood", "myxomatosis", "backdrifting", "go to
sleep", and "sit down. stand up.", there's not a weak track
on either andre's or big boi's discs (excluding interludes,
which obviously aren't songs and opinions are divided as to
whether they add anything to the album as a whole). now,
HTTT is my next favorite album after the new outkast and
prefuse 73, and i love it and have played it to death. but
it's much more flawed than anything on either outkast disc.
i can get into this at some other point when i have some
more time..

"a LOT of the songs on andre's album don't sound like
anything else on it.
"

heh, i think that sentence contradicts itself a little :-p

I still agree with it though. The album is amazingly
varried. The reason Hey Ya! stands out to me as different is
probably because i already knew it from tv before i heard
the other tracks.

It doesn't even come close to HTTT though, which is clearly
the album of the year imo. Not radiohead's best, but i still
enjoyed it more than anything else this year.

Melt Banana - Cell-scape was pretty awesome, can't wait to
see em live!

I think I'm the only one who thinks Sumday is better than
The Sophtware Slump.

Reset is good, but the tracks that really have a
hold of me right now are:

1. Unhappy (interesting sweet & sour melody)
2. Bowtie (extremely reminiscent of Parliament)
3. The Way You Move (those horns are amazing)
4. Bust (lots of energy; the electric guitar is very
effective)
5. War (I love the juxtaposition between the first and
second part of the track. it reminds me of a phoenix being
born from the ashes)
6. Knowing (simple, catchy bassline; nice vox'ed line during
the chorus)
7. Flip Flop Rock (possibly the best track on the disc. best
drums on the disc, piano is very nice and sets a somber
mood)
8. Last Call (perfect club track)

as far as the rhymes go, i think Killer Mike's parts are my
favorite stylisticly. as far as content, probably the lyrics
on War. but the music itself is really where this
disc shines (ironically, andre's also)

it can't be album of the year because it's two albums.

my vote is for Hail to the Thief or Sumday

in that case, The Love Below is album of the year and
Speakerboxx is runner up.

i'm never going to get over how good "a day in the life of
benjamin andre (incomplete)" is. this dude just raps his ass
off. what is that, 80+ bars with no chorus? and yet it keeps
my interest for all 5+ minutes of the song. dre is such a
master lyricist (+ producer.. that keyboard sounds like some
shoes skidding across an inside basketball court with some
addictive click snares to keep the rhythm bouncy) and his
flow's so perfect here that it sounds effortless when in
fact almost no one can possibly match dre in ability. i
think my favorite part is when he says "macaroni niggas..
impostors." that or "well, not exactly.. yes we was selling
it, but no it wasn't blow.." it just cracks me up. he has a
real great sense of humor that really works through subtle
intonations in his voice. as i said, album(s) of the year.

you don't know, i like fugazi

anyway i'm about to leave for a few days, i just want to say
in all sincerity, let's mutually decide to stop giving each
other a hard time.. i've always liked you, i guess you're
pissed because i've criticized some things paul's said
recently, but i like him too you know that? it's just
debate, it's not a slight against anyone. you don't have to
like outkast or whatever, that's fine with me, i just think
you've been giving me a bit of a hard time lately (not so
much the last 3 days or so) and for what i've done to
deserve that i renounce.. truce? (i'll take that as a yes
since i'm walking out the door)

God, me and Paul aren't married or anything! Besides he can
defend himself far better than I could :)

I apologise for "attacking" you in a thread, I was slightly
pissed and when I re-read what you'd said the next day I
realised I'd taken it the wrong way. I'm not really having a
go at you in this thread either, I just CANNOT STAND THAT
BAND!

peace man

come on, what about Manitoba or Four Tet? Up in Flames, and
Rounds are both awesome... HTTT is pretty excellent too!

there're so many wonderful moments in "she lives in my lap",
you just keep uncovering them with each listen.

i skip "hey ya!" now, btw. not that it's not a great song,
it just was never a favorite (i didn't hear it till i had
the album so i gave it an unbiased first listen and thought
it was great but not amazing) and now i'm a bit sick of it..
in a few months it'll be fine again

hey speaking of four tet and HTTT, his remix of
"scatterbrain" will be on a 2+5=5 single and an upcoming
radiohead remix cd very soon

outkast's new double album is only $11.99 at circuit city
from now until november 1 in the US. i only mention it cos
that's just $1 more than what i paid so you can still get
two full discs of great music for dirt cheap instead of
paying $20+ in a year when you decide to give it a chance.

In america cd's become more expensive as time goes
by?!

That's crazy! Over here it's exactly the other way around.
Cd's that have just been released are incredibly expensive.
But by the time the artist puts out his next album, all his
other stuff will probably be alot cheaper.

some music I liked a lot this year is:

µ-Ziq - Billious Paths
Bent - The Everlasting Blink
Autechre - Draft 7.30
Amen Andrews EP's

but the absolute winner is...

Mandy Moore - Coverage

(And should add some old excellent albums I recently
listened/discovered, but those aren't of the current year)
