dont think its going to happen...

i'd like to know what you think richard would put on a
compilation like "back to mine series" where artists usually
put their influences and music they like...
i'd just like to make sure im not missing any of richards
influences or other musicians that he likes

thanks to everyone contributing :)

Eno and Kraftwerk are big influences. I think probably the
biggest influence for Aphex would probably have to be
Humanoid and Baby Ford, you can literally hear quite
sizeable chunks of music taken of Baby Ford and Humanoid
music!

here's what he was listening to a few years ago, courtesy of
perfect sound forever.

*Drexciya The Quest
* Erik Satie 'Trois Gymnopédies'
* Return of the DJ's
* Squarepusher Big Loada
* Luke Vibert Big Soup
* Batucada The Sound Of The Favelas
* Best of Acid 1
* Ween Pod and Pure Guava
* Les Baxter The Exotic Moods of Les Baxter
* Serge Gainsbourg
* Tod Dockstader 'Luna Park'

Drexciya are from Detriot, part of Underground Resistance- I
really like them. Return of the DJ's is music from
California- it's avant-garde hip-hop, taking it to another
extreme with a lot of excessive scratching and cutting up.
Batucada are from South America with really, really fast
rhythms with screaming and shouting with no songs. Best of
Acid 1 is old school from '88 with all of these Chicago
producers and acid tunes.  I love Ween- I really, really
like them and everything they do.  I'm well into Les
Baxter- a right weirdo. I have this double CD by Gainsbough
that I like a lot with 'Lemon Incest' on it. I've got CD's
by Nurse With Wounds and Harry Partch with me but I haven't
listened to them yet.

Goddam when are Drexciya gonna release something really
cool? They seem to be releasing too much mild stuff. Still
the number one all time electro act though.

i prefer dopplereffect a little over drexciya (sounds to
mild for me as well)

are there any new decent electro artists?

No way. Check early Drexciya its as hard as nails - I swear.
Some really badass electro tracks. 'Aquatic Invasion' is
worth checking and 'Bubble Metropolis'.

Eno and Kraftwerk can't be influences. He's stated many
times that he'd never heard of them till he'd been making
music for years.

does anyone know what albums could be the influence for
drukqs?

I think it's more a progression than an inspiration. It's a
natural step in his music.

just because he had been making music for years doesn't mean
that he wasn't subsequently influenced by hearing eno or
kraftwerk. additionally, on artificial intelligence he
lists "computer world" as one of his earliest influences,
along with tomita and tangerine dream. though he doesn't
acknowledge eno here, i find it hard to believe that he
knows so much seventies ambient electronics but wouldn't
have heard eno.

given that richard is such a savvy marketer, i think he's
selling his "uniqueness" and "originality" by denying
influences.

drukqs: the most obvious influence is in the piano works,
erik satie.

I think I got the wrong end of the stick and didn't make my
point clear either.

When I said influences I was thinking about when he started
making music. There's definite eno and kraftwerk influences
later on.

I hope that makes sense. I'm tired.

"selling his "uniqueness" and "originality""

im buying his music because i think its the best music there
is, not becuase of what he or people say about his music
and i think thats the case with most people on this board...

ok...

how about his current preferences?

from what i've heard in his live sets he seem to like
rougher stuff lately

vsnares, squarepusher, hellfish, vibert, lots of
jungle...artists on rephlex,...

others im missing?

tolstoyed, don't take it personally. i never said anyone
here bought his music because of this. but you'd have to be
pretty naive to not recognize the hype that richard has
skillfully cultivated. his insignia that he paid a designer
to create, his deceptive and self-contradictory interviews,
using ambiguous photos instead of proper names for tracks,
his silly sinister self portraits, his provocative videos,
all of these marketing efforts contribute to his image and
reputation and popularity. whether they affect anyone here
is not for me to say.

i note again that richard identified kraftwerk as one of his
"earliest influences."

he seems to respect whitehouse and merzbow quite a lot.

i agree with everything you're saying...but really, it is
all up to music for me, i mean drukqs is my favourite album
by far, i love at least 2/3 of everything he released, and
his live stuff is amazing, the way he's able to combine
sounds...i saw quite some live acts, concerts, different
gigs but i was the most impressed with richards stuff

it is true tho, that perhaps i'd never really get to know
his music the way i know it now if he wasnt this popular (on
this site) and if i didnt read all that stories about him,
but now it is really all up to music...and he constantly
keeps me interested

Eno was not an influence on the ambient works. Ateast he
claims. He went searching after he heard comparisons

guy called gerald? really?
i had one of his albums for a really long time, i bought it
before i got into aphex...weird enough i never really liked
it

but you're all listing mostly expected names , i guess there
would be many more to list if i'd ask about rdj followers

It's tradition that the compiler of a "Back to Mine" does a
remix of one track that influnced them and features that on
the compilation. It'd be interesting to see what Richard
did... maybe a cover of some early Mike Dred acid track?

Good thread BTW.

i really like this back to mine series, it gives you certain
idea about the artist and i like those short comments about
each track and why they find it inspireing

i'd love to see rdj do it some day...
