Well I think the fundamental difference in fanbase for Aphex
vs other popular music, is that once a fan of Aphex you're a
fan for life.

Come on, loopychoon, if you're sick of radio and
television over-promoting some artists, just don't listen
to/watch it.
You'll feel much better.

Well, yeah what I see and hear on the media passing for
entertainment depresses me.
Can't always turn it off though. Once a week (thankfully) I
work in a wharehouse where they play the local commercial FM
station.
The same tunes round and round.. over and over again for
weeks on end.
These FM stations really get their teeth into a piece of
music if think it's a bit of a modern day classic.
At first it annoyed me until I realized I needed to thank
goodness they weren't killing something I hold dear.

Turn it off? Sure I coud do that or retune but there are
other people working there and the lowest common denominator
is what they'll put back on.

So now and again I switch it off for a bit whilst nobody
else is near but otherwise I thank goodness for DIDO :P

*throws up*

I don't know about the US, but mainstream music is suffering
badly over here in the UK - Top of the Pops is gonna be
taken off the air pretty soon for low viewing figures and
all the majors are downsizing at the moment - It's about
time too - Pop Will Eat Itself.

fair enough... I'm not the most knowledgable about that, but
I was thinking here in North America at least... you don't
see much instrumental music on the billboard charts... well,
in higher positions anyways... I know some of this stuff
does well in the UK, but the UK is awesome as far as music
is concerned! :)

it's currently not very memetically successful at
replicating.

dude, pop and top 40 is NOT alive and kicking... in fact,
it's the ONLY music suffering. like somone else said, i give
it 2 more years, tops. this industry is changing, and OUR
generation is going to be the one to re-sculpt it. IF we
take advantage of the opportunity.

The point that needs to be made that if this music becomes
full on mainstream. I'm talking daily radio play and MTV
exposure to the max then people who're influenced by "The
nxt big thing" are only going to buy what they get told by
MTV is great.
The real fans, and I think I mean all the people on this
board, are the ones who'll delve into the genre more.
They'll make a point of finding out more about the music,
it's origins, they'll find out about the artists behind it.
They won't content themselves with Now that's what I
call.... Electronica 45
they'll look into it. They'll
find sites like this one. When the trend dies over, there'll
be more fans of the music. The few who aren't just going
with fashions. Personally I think it could be a great thing.
Not that long ago I was worried about what the mainstream
profile could do. Then I realised that it could be a good
thing. So there'll be some shit music that's an insult to
the genre. So what? If it's shitm don't buy it. There'll
still be good releases. If Aphex æ []pusher etc all wanted
mainstream success then they'd have released that type of
album a long time ago. They're clearly not that bothered and
release music for the fun and to make some money from it but
they don't give a fuck that they're releasing to a minority.

What gets on my nerve is the "chemical brotherS? they're
SHIT! drum n bass? BORING, all this stuff is too
MAINSTREAM"

I'm actually gettnig into a lot of pop music, liek listening
t othe background stuff, there's a lot to be learned from
conventional music, imho.

oh and whenever I make a breakbeat track it gets shat on. I
don't liek that either.

And I never get what I want for xmas. Well I will this xmas
(snicker)

I said pop is alive and kicking... and so it is... just turn
on the radio and listen to the crap Good Charlotte stuff
they play... bubblegum might be changing styles slightly,
but it's still bubblegum crap!

Doesn't matter to me if IDM gets big... there's the risk
that it could get overexposed, but that doesn't matter to me
since I don't listen to the radio or watch music television,
so it's all good. IDM influenced music are all the rage on
commercials these days, it seems...

I miss good old fashioned chart topping rock. Rock is dead,
long live rock.

promo, i totally agree. and if IDM gets a bit more exposed,
so what? doesn't necessarily mean it will become mainstream.
i mean, you can get good exposure but still remain obscure.
look at talking heads and tom waits - they both were quite
exposed (waits WAS on island), but remain highly acclaimed,
not to mention college-radio friendly.

me personally, i could give a crap less if i make money off
my music - but it would be nice, especially if it could get
me out of my grandmother's house.

and btw, zeus is flipping me off, for stealing his
extra-terrestrial lover. :P
