hmmm let's do some math: 261 people sued / 60,000,000 people sharing files = .000435% chance (roughly 1 in 230,000) of being sued by RIAA representatives. i like those odds, personally. |

Even if they managed a crackdown on P2P networks like kazaa they'd never stop file sharing... people would just resort to private systems like Elusive's FTP etc. Rephlex have the right idea with some of their releases... I just bought a record today (new Bogdan) because they had made it freely available to DL, I liked it and now I've bought it. Would I have bought it if those mp3s weren't there? Probably not, unless I had DLed it from SS. |

Yep -fortunatley for us, Warp et all seem a little more forward thinking with regard to MP3s and seem to accept that for them at least, it gives exposure and does more good than harm to them. So many people here said they discovered AT/Ae by stumbling on a file on a P2P. Only people/labels I can think of that disagree is Benbecula (label) and Ulrich Schnauss (artist)... both of which I discovered through P2P and subsequently bought records from! |

people's time/effort/work/thought goes into both. /devil's advocate i don't at all try to justify the major lables as the good guys at all, because they are certainly money hungry, close-minded, corporate tycoons. but, i also don't try to justify my d/l'ed mp3's as morally superior either. |

Ark-shully there was a problem with Winamp where the id3 tags could cause a buffer overflow - that means if you stuck long enough crap into those fields you could overflow into an executable area of memory and like do shit. I don't think the flaw was ever exploited though... |

I will never buy another product from an RIAA affiliated label. They can kiss my pink unholy mousie holie. On the other hand I plan to buy lots of stuff from smaller labels like Tomlab, Carpark, Mu, Skam et cetera. of labels not to buy from. Stand on their necks until they pass out. |

It's like the "tree falling in the woods" question. Music only exists when there is somebody there to hear it. In the void of space, there is no medium to transmit soundwaves. so in space, does music even exist? The Mp3 is music encoded into raw data. without a decoder, the mp3 is not music. if you make available mp3's for others to download, how is your action any different than Sony or Magnavox or Intel making available the technology to decode and listen to mp3's? By sharing files, you are only one link in a chain of participants that made sharing possible. Even more frustrating is that companies like Sony are making money off of people "stealing" their own product. Sony makes and sells the tools to steal music that they produce. But what do they have to gain by doing this? exposure deffinately. I think it comes down to marketing. The fact is, taking advantage of filesharing would mean record companies would have to totally rework and reconfigure their marketing strategy. This would take time and most importantly it would take money. It is much easier to make a few idle threats and try to discourage the inevitable change that someday they will be forced to accept. |

Record sales are down because major record companies are releasing SHIT music that NOBODY WANTS. They hate mp3 sharing because it allows the user to preview the entire album, then the user realizes that only 1 decent song is on the album, so they dont have to buy the album and they just keep that one song. Big record companies dont want you to preview, they just want you to buy the entire thing for that one song. |
