this message keeps showing up on soulseek, when i try to
log on:

Could not resolve server address. If your internet
connection is up, this might be a temporary problem with
your name resolution service. Please try again later.

any ideas what this is?

okay, i think i fixed it, the only problem now is that i've
changed the "hosts" file to hosts.txt in order to edit it..
and now that i've done that it seems it wont switch out of
this format even when i just change the name to hosts
without .txt on the end... there's probably a really easy
way to do this... yes?

There was a global message that came through about this
within the last 8 hours explaining that you should download
that new client

Thursday, September 04, 2003
A temporary DNS fix client is available here. I recommend
you backup your *.cfg files before you install this, just in
case. If clicking directly on the link doesn't work, try
right-clicking it and selecting "save...", that should do
the trick.
Nir 12:12 AM

*note* i have been connected for forever now and have had
not to do this yet.

If you are running the old client then you will have to
update to my understanding.

are you just supposed to open that .exe-file and install it
and then everything is fixed? i cant get it to work...

offline goDel from ɐpʎǝx (Seychelles) on 2003-09-04 14:11 [#00850016]
Points: 10225 Status: Lurker

yes, run the .exe file - its just like installing a new
version of soulseek (it is actually).

viktor, do you get an error when you run the .exe file?

there's also another solution posted at the slsk forum, i'll
post it next :P

http://firetrack.no-ip.org/store/temp/fixhosts.bat

save that file and run it. reboot. that's it!

(WAS:
1. right click here

2. choose save target as...

3. in the file name box, change hosts.txt to hosts.

4. on windows 95/98/me save the file in c:\windows

on windows nt/2k/xp/2k3 save the file in
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc

if you are prompted to overwrite an existing file, say yes.

5. reboot.

congratulations!

ISSUES!!

- on win9x, you may be unable to save a file without an
extension. if this occurs, simply browse to c:\windows and
rename hosts.txt to hosts, without any extension. say "yes"
to any kind of warnings that pop up.

- if windows XP may not give you access to the file. the
file may be read-only. browse to
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc, right click the hosts file,
choose properties, and uncheck the read-only attribute.
