sobigf bug report from sky news:

A crippling computer virus is crashing email networks around
the world.

One in 17 emails now has the SoBig.F bug - which threatens
to slow the internet to a crawl.

The SoBig virus spreads when computer users open file
attachments in emails that contain such familiar headings as
"Thank you", "Re: Details" or "Re: approved".

Once the file is opened, SoBig, which first appeared on
Monday, scours the computer for email addresses, checking in
Word documents, Internet logs and email inboxes.

Designed like mass-mailing spam programmes, it then sends
scores of messages to the addresses it has collected.

MessageLabs, a British-based Internet security firm, said
one in 17 emails sent around the world since Monday had been
affected by SoBig.

Messagelabs' chief information analyst Paul Wood said it was
feared that it could increase global email traffic by as
much as 60 percent, slowing the Internet to a crawl.

"It's unprecedented in our history. We stopped over one
million (infections) in the first day," he said.

"It's a pretty frightening statistic. And the next
incarnation could be even worse."

I've had about 800 of these across my various email
addresses. The xltronic email alone has had at least 200/300
of the buggers. Been infected 0 times. Hurrah for paranoia!

the virus experts have predicted a mass-storm of the Sobig.F
worm during the upcoming weekend. Sobig.F was just recently
upgraded to level 4 alert.

luckily the worm is harmless and does not damage your system
(apart from the heavy traffic it does generate).

please...if only the companies would turn off the
"autoreply: you have virus" feature on their mailservers.
the sender is not necessary infected, and the amount of
traffic increases even more.

the worm will terminate on september 10th and from this date
onwards it won't spread.

I knew this kid who did a computer course with me and who
wanted to specialise in computer security so he could hack
into other peoples' computers.

He was my friend but I told him that he was a dick for
wanting to do that shit.

He used the excuse "Oh man, but hackers are useful! Society
needs them! They test security on government sites etc and
when they get in the government knows they need to
upgrade!"

BUT if we didn't have hackers, we wouldn't need this kind of
security. and they don't just break in, they ruin
everything.

Same with viruses. WHY?

I'd like to have 5 mins alone with the skinny little
pale-ass nerd shit who created that poza msblast virus
that's been plaguing my workplace, I guarantee I'd beat the
living shit out of his pussy ass in liek 30 seconds.

Wankers.

I think you're confusing hackers with crackers. Hackers just
test the security and notify you when something is not right
and don't destroy stuff

i have big respect to the oldskool hackers and phreakers
from the mid80-mid90. their knowledge and intelligence were
just fantastic. they shouldn't be put in the same pigonehole
as crackers, who intentionally destroys systems and messes
up things.

hwoever, today it's very easy to destroy systems - simply
download a software from the net and hit "run". kiddies
still with the lack of pubhair, sometimes have fun with this
type applications.

I'd go nuts hardcore crazy punch up if someone sent me an
e-mail that deleted everything, this virus doesn't even DO
anything, imagine if it did, there would be worldwide chaos

maybe we should get virus filters, just like spam filters on
some peoples isp's

script kiddies are a big problem - especially considering
how easy it is to pick up a port scanner and winnuke
nowadays

crackers and hackers arent the bad and good of computer
security - crackers deal with software, operating systems,
and file manipulation and "cracking" (altering them to do a
specific task - whereas hackers deal with computer security
and networks.

there are good and bad people in each of these categories.

the difference between "oldskool" hackers and "script
kiddies" is like the difference between "graffiti artists"
and "bombers/taggers",

one I want to shake their hand, and the other I want to
break it

well - thats not exactly what i mean - but dealing with
changing software and operating systems is considered
"Cracking" because you are altering the programs - hacking
and cracking are just actions that are performed - and
hackers, crackers, and even phreakers dont need to be
divided into groups - its the actions that are classified
seperately

Yeah I don't know the finer points about crackers/hackers.
You guys know what I mean though. I want to beat the shit
out of people who ruin shit.

I saw a docoi on theoldschool hackers, they really brought
computers into their own. Obviously I don't really wanna
beat up on them.

bombers/taggers are graffiti artists.

there are 'script kiddies' with as much knowledge as
'oldschool hackers'.

please dont generalise, based on your opinion and views on
certain people.

"a kid who writes his name/nick on a wall is NOT an
artists"

please give me a break. could you look at that statement and
claim that this is nothing but a personal opinion? first
off, you seem to think every tagger is a 'kid'. i'd very
much like to see you walk up to a group of taggers at night
and calling them a bunch of antisocial kids. most taggers i
know are well above the age of 20 by now and i can asure
you, they're just like you and me, with normal jobs,
girlfriends and whatnot. also, tagging is a part of the
graffiti culture whether you like it or not. its not some
stand-alone thing.

there are people who do full colour pieces, and at night
they go out bombing. there is also a small group of people
that only do tags, to fuck shit up. if they dont have
skills, they lose my respect as well.

still, you only see what you wanna see. tell youself what
you want to hear.

as for the 'script kiddies', again you seem to think that
the people you hate are all kids, who are in one big
conspiracy to bug the living crap out of you. has it ever
occurred to you that these so called 'pre made' programs,
are programmed too? where do you think those come from
then?

be mad at the whole world. call everyone you dislike
'annoying kids' then. your views are typical and
superficial, because all you can do is generalise.

p.s: just for the record, i agree that hackers/crackers, and
some taggers are indeed annoying and unnecessary.

ok, straight out

I don't like bombers, regardless of whether they CAN do some
decent art,

and I don't like destructive hackers, even if they DO know
their way around c++ and other crap

someone can attain all the knowledge and skills they want,
it doesn't mean a fuck to me unless they try to do something
good with it

Who would be stupid enough to open some dubious attachment
in an email from someone you don't know?! It's a different
case if the email opens itself, like with some viruses. I
get virus mails regularly from "Mail Delivery Subsystem"
with subjects like "Mail unsent", then I see it has an
attachment and get I rid of it.

ok on the graffiti point, from some one who used to write
but doesn't much anymore. graf writers aren't artists,
simple as that, why? because they never wanted to be
associated with artists and generally the pomp an crap that
goes with that, preffer to be called writers not artists
because they write their name and in the truest sense a good
artist does not necessarily make a good writer it is a
completley different thing.
