I was expecting replies. and I got them, so thanks.
That's why I wrote that.
You can make an intelligent discussion out of anything.

I totally agree there. I find this whole being proud of
being from a country thing weird. I'm proud of my
achievements and those of my loved ones. In what way in
being born in a specific country an achievement. It isn't
something I had any say over. I guess I'm really just
moaning about semantics here. I find it normal that one
would say that they are proud of their homeland for it's
contributions and achievements but to word it "I'm proud to
be xyz" just annoys me...

"But we went from talking politics about things you don't
like about another coutnry, to blanket judgements about
that
country without any defense of that country.

is there a defense for these things I've discussed? I don't
think so. And what could that country (I mean the people in
power) possibly say? "we did wrong"? They aren't even going
to say that.
And if they did, we'd probably see some sweet changes :)

----
I take offense as you claim I shouldn't

You're wrong, I want everybody to speak their mind.

If some asshole said I should be ashamed to be American,
I would just walk away.

being ashamed and proud they are two completely different
things, and if we put them on a scale there are things
inbetween.

Here I feel we can talk about this, and I am expressing
astonishment at being told I can have no pride in where I
live or the government that protects me.

the government may protect you, but does it protect all
other Americans? I wrote more about this in my previous
reply to you.

Don't tread on me because you don't like something, that
gets no where. Talk about it like you care and don't insult
me, and some things may come to light that
you overlooked or didn't know before.

please, don't take it like this. It's not the point. It's
nothing personal. It may see so from the first post, but I
think I explained what I meant about it earlier.

Don't slag me off cuz of where I'm from.......

Again I am not slagging you off, and you are taking it way
to personal. I'd like to say "you're not an american."
Because being an american is something abstract.

Countries can rise and fall, and be destroyed. What is left
is you, an englishspeaking man, with certain friends, a
family, and your life and experiences. And that is tangible,
and what matters in life.

That isn't a personal attack, and we can debate it. I
just never expected to be treated like a Nazi for living in
Germany, so to speak.

First, can you please explain why you took it so personal?
It never intended to be...
Nobody should be treated like anything because they live
somewhere. it's who they are and especially what they do
that counts.

I agree with last post. U have to think it's a mix of
diffrent races, wich make US strong and weak.

In richness US with 280 billion citizens are only matched by
Luxenburg and Lichtenstein. US are about 1/3 richer than EU
countries and Japan. (With the new expansions in EU the
population will outnumber US by 3, but still US has close to
total dominans economical, technological and cultural)

To think US is an evil empire is just naive. Everything new
comes from there and if u should mention your top ten
favourite of music, computer games, movies, software, tv
show or any new cool trend it's from there. The american
popular-culture is totally dominating the youth culture
everywhere on the planet. And no we are not forced by evil
cooperations to like it. It's not just popular culture but
the same scenario is also seen in the buissnes world and a
number of other fields. So instead of getting mad about
anything they do, come with alternatives. Today you are pro
american or the opesite, there are no theird option. Yes u
can have your own ways but it will just be more or less
american.

It's well known thing to think that behind all the facade
the double-standard US are led by a cynical calculating
money hungry elite that want total dominas and gives a damn
about other countries. U at least have had to been there to
judge, US are not worse than the rest of us

iono, I hear it everyday here. That my country sucks and
the government sucks and what not.

I'm 20, still too young to make major changes in this world.
I plan too, big fucking changes, but I can't do much for 10
years or so.

It's just so desperaging to hear it over and over, but
whatever.

figures my favorite comic today prefect for you guys too.

not.

well that is what I mean.
being proud of "a country" is pretty nonsense since you do
not rule the country yourself (is responsible for everything
good), and everything counts...
If you think the government is good - say "I am proud of our
government".

I'm proud to be British. Why shouldn't I be. I believe a lot
of people are jealous of the British. The yobs and lager
louts yes I would be quite happy for them to emigrate to
some other country but apart from that I'm extremely proud
to be British.

again, why anyone would take it personal or be offended by
the first statement (which was not intended) is because you
and I share a different opinion of what it means, I guess.

Anyway, I'm off to eat some sweet living food, but if anyone
feels like it, please add anything to this topic.
When I think of it now, there isn't really much to discuss
around the article, but I like, except for that people were
VERY OFFENDED (which was not intended), the short discussion
we had.

For me, a non-american person, it's important to know what
you think about certain things. And I guess either people
aren't thinking about what you're actually saying when you
say "I'm proud of being an [e.g.] american".
TonyFish put it quite well (and I agree) :

"I find this whole being proud of
being from a country thing weird. I'm proud of my
achievements and those of my loved ones. In what way in
being born in a specific country an achievement. It isn't
something I had any say over."

ok, before I go:

You're wrong promo. Sure we have choices in life, but some
things isn't up to you (and sometimes nobody) to decide.

Things like what you are born to; sex, race is up to nobody
to decide really. The most ideal thing would be that your
birth is a prodcut of the love your parents share - and love
goes beyond races.

Things which isn't up to you to decide is things like "the
birth things", and things that laws makes it impossible for
you to decide.

---

and because of that the world we live in looks like it does
- you don't have full control of your life.
Many choices aren't up to you, I don't think you have
thought this over really.
Even if I would immigrate to some country I am not
garantueed to be allowed to stay there.

eh, I think I lost myself, well I'm off to food.

Key_Secret,

Er right. No you have 100% control over your life. It is
people who make a mess of things and are losers that like to
pretend their situation is out of their hands, it isn't. The
moment your start to take responsibility for the things you
do the better your life will be.

Karma police, arrest this man
He talks in math, he buzzes like a fridge
Hes like a detuned radio

Karma police, arrest this girl
Her hitler hairdo is making me feel ill
And we have crashed her party

This is what you get... when you mess with us!

(from the top of my head, dunno if this is correct really)

oh promo, it seems like you didn't even read my post...
Yes one should take responsability for all actions, but some
things even in adult life you cannot decide over - I wish it
wasn't so. This may sound extreme to some people, but it
isn't. It's the way it should be, the way we're supposed to
be living.

for instance, and this is a stupid example;
I kill someone, and then I want to spend the following
years at home. I can't, because the law won't allow me to
(the law wants me to be "punished").

Key_Secret,

You're just taking it to silly degress. That is not my
point. My point is simple you can either choose to make a
failure of your life or not. Those who subscribe to the view
that the way life pans it down to luck or other fantasy
based notions makes me really angry. It is the weakest shit
ever.

I am proud to be american. It's not like i got the damn flag
stapled to my ass or anything but obviously we are doing
something right here. Look at how many people try to come to
the states for better lives.... people from all over.

3rd world country? Don't be ignorant, we are the only
superpower currently soon to be joined by our friends over
in europe.

My point is simple you can either choose to make a
failure of your life or not.

I don't agree. First of all, when making such a statement
you need define what you think is a "failure"... And lets
say everybody's got their own definition - I think some
people try real hard with some things, even believe in
themselves and stuff, but still don't succeed.

Some things you cannot decide on, it's as simply as that.
Take life as it is, as it goes, as it will be - but make the
best of it. It's all you can do.

Well making the best of life is fine still sounds like a cop
out however suggesting circumstances are out of your hands
is a prescription for failure. Also I have no problem with
people trying in fact I applaud it 100%. People who go for
it and are resilient and don't give up will eventually
succeed. In fact this is best summed up by a classic phrase
'people don't plan to fail they just fail to plan'.

I'm British and I'm far from fucking proud! You want to talk
about third world countries? What about england? Look at our
health system and educational system and transport. By
european standards they're abismal. Look at the trains. No
