I feel this community should have a record label started.
A lot of us are musicians, and all we need is someone to
focus. I would do it myself, but I'm only an ideas man, ya
know.

At least, some kind of affiliation with a label or
something. Maybe an Xltronic A&R man or something like that.

something similiar, but unrelated to Xltronic. Back then, I
foolishly imagined I would be able to do it. But I'm only
good for ideas, I am TOTALLY useless when any hint of
practicality is involved !

run your own record label'

it's a good idea in theory, and as much as I would enjoy it,
it's tough work.

saying you're going to start a record label is one thing,
DOING it is an entirely different story. there's cost for
manufacturing, promotion, etc. etc.

however, if it were a DIY label, say, musicians selling
their cdr's through xltronic, and the profits were split
50/50 with phobia, then it might work. I stress on the word
"might."

However, I'll stop pissing on this dream right now and enjoy
it.... ahhh.... ^_^

thats a bit simplistic, cos there's legal issues about stuff
like making money, samples etc etc etc

That's why I started this thread - I'm just getting the ball
rolling ! someone else can do the hard work !!!

this thread should pinned with pride to the top

so i guess we keep bumping it until someone takes the
responsibility of the hard work?

it's funny actually.... the person who does all the hard
work usually makes the most of the profit, simply because of
what they put into it.

in. it's just an idea, at no point did he say he would set
up the rrecorrd company. he's just a regularr (ish) guy. the
big boys need to get involved. and he needs a finderrs fee

teapot industries is a registered business owned by me, its
used for all my art shit, exhibitions and graphic design
that ive done on occassion... but ive been wanting to start
a label under the name for ages... had loads of people
enthusiastic to be in, but when the time comes, they are too
lazy. anyway. the first release that comes out on monday is
xanpha ep1.2... [TEEP001] basically my idea on how teapot
industries would work : the artist funds his/her release and
releases it themself... the artist gets all the profit...
the only real involvement teapot industries has, is it
assigns a catalogue number, and your work will be available
for order on a site, which im yet to do... this will go on
until teapot industries gets to a stage where it can
somewhat fund releases and work as a normal label, the idea
is that it establishes a name, and the artist also plays a
part in building something that they will always be a part
of...

...or something to that effect.

im hoping that Mepq [korban dallas] is the next release,
also i want to put together a various artist comp.

this may not sound great to you guys, it requires work from
the artist. but at the same time, how is a label supposed to
begin without thousands of dollars backing it?

also tho, i will print and distribute the releases here in
brisbane... all money will go to the artist, minus what it
cost me to print and release. i do have a small amount of
cash behind me

id happly do this but i know nobody in any kind of record
company to give me help and i have a job so you need
somebody with time there hands to do this properly

but in principal this whole subject sounds good

how about artist who want to do this pay a one off admin
cost ie legal and site registration to who will set this up
then distibution costs can be settled form sales (just a
thought)

btw teapot im in

cool... glad to see some people are still cool with the
idea... my next step is the various artists compilation...
which i will print and release here, each artist on the
compilation will own the right to also print and distribute
it, so its in your hands to make cash off it... i will also
send all the artists a free copy and some teapot industries
promo stuff that you can do what you like with.

i always seem to go through with my ideas, so expect this to
happen... ill keep you guys posted on that one

The only way to get a label started is by releasing some
serious quality music. Something that is going to stand a
chance against the millions of other labels. Something that
has broad enough appeal too and isn't too obscure. The
obvious way to run a label on the cheap is do everything on
the cheap burning CDs via a home computer doing your own
printing etc etc. Doing your own press, pr, getting it in
record shops etc etc. The whole business if you ask me is
extremely tough. You have to be very savvy. The whole thing
would require serious effort but at least doing it the way
I've suggested running a label wouldn't mean chasing massive
expenditure. People just don't get it, its always spend
spend spend. People running labels just to flatter their
egos is sad and it just results in a bunch of CDs/Records in
a cupboard which never get sold leaving them with a big
whole in their pocket. I managed to run an event at a profit
and a reasonable margin at that. For instance a lot of
people I know yak on saying you can't run small events at a
profit well I proved that theory wrong. First time I did it
too. Doing something successfully requires a 'business
brain' and not a 'I must spend brain'.

teapot,

That is so cheap! I'm sorry you expect people to piss away
money for releases and then in some vain hope that your
'supposed' record label gets some credibility and decent pr
then you expect to reap the rewards. People of the board
this is vanity publishing at its worst case. Really sad. If
the music isn't quality enough for Planet-Mu or other labels
why on earth would people want to buy it?Shit its hard
enough for an established high profile label like Planet-Mu
to sell records. Come on people come back down to earth
please! At least have a plan other than some half arsed sado
vanity publishing project.
