Christ man, why do you think it's a vanity project? Have you
thought that maybe it's the act of trying to accomplish
something? I've never sent anything to a record label. But
Teapot/xanpha/james talking about the record label being
self funded appealed to me. If you're putting your own money
into something then you're more likely to try and sell it.
If it's someone elses money then you're going to be bothered
but in another way. Think before you kick off. Please.

giginger,

You're missing the point. What you're doing has a technical
term and its actually called 'vanity publishing'. I'm just
trying wake people up. Don't just been so bloody keen to
piss away money on something which has no plan and no basis
in reality. I just explained that you have to do things on
absolute nil cost or attempt to do it that way. Its the only
way to start things - its called minimising risk. That way
you have less to loose and respectivily more to gain. I am
trying to help but if people prefer to live in some
pre-school fantasy world that is their choice.

Give us some constructive, detailed advice, promo. You are
using technicalities, so I am going to assume that you
are/have been involved in this kind of thing, or maybe
studied it.

"I am
trying to help but if people prefer to live in some
pre-school fantasy world that is their choice."

Perhaps, but it's still a little more productive than the
"pre-pre-school" fantasy world of never leaving your bedroom
or even uploading your music. Hoping that one day a famous
label head will walk by, hear your music out your open
window and ring your doorbell, contract in hand :D

nobsmuggler,

You don't have to beat yourself up about it. I know of lots
of labels and people who've printed up X amount of records
and Cds and they can't sell the junk and basically it can
often been seen as purely an exercise in 'vanity
publishing'. Of course you have to enjoy what your do and I
commend Teapot's efforts. Of course things have to be well
thought out and planned in order for them to be successful.
All I can say is I hope it works well. :-)

Ceri JC,

I think that quality, originality and good old fashioned
commercial appeal speaks for itself. I have heard very few
artists on free mp3 download sites which I genuinely think
have the sheer weight of production and quality in their
tracks that they could be on a serious label such as Mu or
Rephlex.

Agreed- I'd never for example re-mortgage a flat and put the

The only problem I can see with releasing on bigger labels,
like Mu and Rephlex, is that they have to be very pickey
about what they put out...
Maybe sometimes they have to be more concerned about style
and fashion than actually releasing good music.
That's kind of the impression I get.
If someone released something that sounded just like
SAW'85-92, taking that simple medolic sound a bit further,
I'd jump at the chance to buy it - I know a lot of people
would... But I doubt those labels would want to put
something like that out.
I don't know - I can certainly see a place for smaller
indepandant labels too... But I know exactly what you're
saying Promo - You really do need something that's going to
stand out against the latest warp/mu releases to actually
get anywhere.

J Swift,

Definitely. And more importantly not one release can be
mediocre. Every single release has to be top draw 10 out of
10. Its tough what can I say the best artists usually go to
the best labels but not always.

i don't feel like reading through all of this shit but:

starting a label is not exactly easy. the first release is
the hardest, because you have no money from the last release
to use.

if you want to do anything you're going to need at least
$1000 US

teapot: i believe you have heard a few of my tracks (the
sonic remix, and a few others?), but do you think my music
is worthy of being on your label? but maybe you should wait
to say because i plan to upload a 7-track ep-style release
once i have access to a high-speed connection.

Sure, go ahead and start your labels but do not associate it

I'll sign on to the label but i require a few things to
close the deal:

1. BItches
2. Ho's
3. Bling
4. Bling
5. a low ridin' SU Vizzle with 40 inch Rizzles.
6. Ho's

I'd also like a platinum grill with my name spelled in ice.

People can release all they want but if the quality isn't
there then no one will buy it. All the same it occurs to me
that a lot of artists these days don't bother mailing out
CDs and tapes because basically its costly and a major
hassle/bore.
