Which artist are to you unsung heroes in IDM? To me it's B12 from the early '90. The music was so influencial at that time, but they haven't got the audience this days they earn.

artemis,
B12 don't appear to release music anymore or if they do its going pretty unnoticed.
Well unsung heroes; I'd definitely have to go for someone like Clatterbox who is on Hydrogen Dukebox records. He is pretty exceptional, he was on Clear Records originally which kinda came out of Rephlex. Some of the Mircromusic.net producers go pretty unnoticed I guess. I think Gwem is pretty top rate and so is DRX (one half of Bodenstandig 2000).

alnuit,
Yes yes yes I totally second Tom Middleton. Reload and Global Comms sorry no one can touch them. Reload especially, extremely high quality material and innovation. Why the hell did they grind to a halt? 1993's 'A Collection of Short Stories' was such a good record. And Global Communications (sigh) oh they were so so good. Shame he is now producing pretty unnoticeable music. The other half of Reload has gone on to make really trashy disgusting Ibiza crappy yobby get drunk and be crude as hell dance music sad sad sad.

Hate to break it to you but Tom Middleton is Cosmos who went on to do a lot of house and ibiza tunes. Mark Pritchard now does a lot of hip hop, he was also behind the rave version of rhubarb and custard....

severed heads made many classic mutant electronic tunes. check out the "hot with fleas" 12", and "dead eyes opened" ep, and the album "come visit the big bigot" (called "the big bigot" in australia).
for more noise oriented severed heads, check out "since the accident" and "city slab horror."
anything after 1988 is going to be spotty. their career was ruined by association with the so-called industrial sound (which they really never had) that became very unfashionable, subsequent apparent attempts at a clubbier sound, as well as a few weak albums and singles.
other artists who don't get mentioned here (but should) include:
tim koch: a plaid vibe with great melodies and catchy rhythms. see "shorts in alaska."
sogar: warm sparkly static flows up and over you. see "stengel."

ok i dont know if you'd call him a "hero"... (i dont think hes very influential)... but autechre like him, and i'd feel like a hero if they liked me.. im talking about
FREEFORM!!!!!
no one ever mentions him!! hes VERY under-rated imo.....
check out "elastic speakers", his first album and by far the most conventional sound, but very very good, and the easiest to get into
his music just gets weirder from there.. hes developed a pretty organic sound, especially Audiotourism
his latest is Human which is also cool... lots of complex, "skittering" rhythms and combinations of sounds
anyways very good and underrated

Otto.
Lyrics from Chopped Zombie Fungus out takes I through III
Benadict: "Hello, my name is Benadict. I am here to ask you some questions, for your fans out there, the vampires of IDM"
Otto: "fffffffuuuu---oh a oh a ha hu ay! I don't make fuckin IDDDMMMMmmmmm"
Benedict: "oooohhh."
Benedict: "My first question is about your third album. The glamourous Chopped Zombie Fungus Trilogy. Are you considering perhaps bonus material? Like extra songs, you know, for the vampires?"
Otto: "Boom boom, rock speggetti, toe picker, use a blueberry, toe sniffer. Hello, fris my nik, rub my tit, cheese cake."
Benadict: "Ohh. Indeed, indeed. I truely do respect a man with talent. Well, for my second question. Is it true, a man with your intelligence has inverted nipples?"
Otto: "Boom, take a picture, of my armpit, so my belly button, won't be jealous"
Benadict: "Ohhh! oooo. Ladies and Gentlemen, what an answer, Indeeeeed!"
Otto: "oh a oh a o e A! paranoid, I dont make i-i-i-i-d-m, fuck idm, YOUR GONNA GET SMAKED DOWN!"
Benadict: "Spoken like a true, hood, should. wow. Goly - gee."
Unknown: "Hmm.. well my favorite cist buggers, ooo smells good, mmm tastes good, mmm...snack box fruit cake, system, wheat, system for breakfast mmm bacon and toe jam, toe jam and jelly frost
Benadict: For my last question, I was wondering... do you have a high school diploma?
Otto: "Your gonna get smacked. Can you tango, with a mango. Your gonna get smacked.
And that bastard is gonna puke: Puke motha fucka, puke motha fucka, puke motha fucka. Motha fucka what. Motha fucka, PUKE MOTHA FUCKA, PUKA MOTHA FUCKA.
Technological advancement, science, madness, they want some shit they can't understand, some shit their mom doesn't know about. Bring your calculator, its on.

morton subotnick- he was making electronic music just as bizarre and complex as the weirdest 'idm' artists of today as far back as the 50's and 60's
louis and bebe barron- the forbidden planet score is still some of the coolest electronic music ever made.
808 state - they were right up there with lfo back in their day, and were a big influence on the early warp stuff, but seem kinda overlooked.
