romance - more or less

its been a while since i saw it, but if i remember right,
there are 3 stories about love

1st one is about two young people that are in love, but he
is from a rich familly and his parents want him to marry
another (fancy) girl...so on the day of his wedding the poor
girl (the one he's in love with) trys to kill herself with
some pills - but they take her to hospital and save
her...the guy hears about this and decides to leave his job
and familly to stay with the girl-but she suffered brain
damage because of pills and she is helpless - they live as
bums as he cant leave her alone because of her illness

2nd one is about a pop singer and her big fan. she used to
be very pretty, but she suffered face damage (in a car
accident i think) and is now hiding from people...this fan
is trying to get in touch with her, but she wouldnt allow
him as she's uncomfortable with her looks - so the guy
blinds himself just to be with her

3rd one is about an older couple...i cant remember this one
too well but its a great story as well...i know that he
promissed her (in their young age) to marry her - i think he
went to war after that and lost touch with the woman, but
she was bringing him lounch to a park (they were having
lunch in a park once per week) for 50 years or so, waiting
that he will finally show up

i loved the photography as well and music is awesome, acting
superb, costumes are great...

btw, it was directed by takeshi kitano

here's a takeshi kitano comment abot this film

"these are three contemporary stories inspired by the
everlasting emotions expressed by the precious dolls of
bunraku theater. three stories intertwined by the beauty of
sadness. three stories of undying love."

Think Sonatine and Hana-bi are my favorites...
Scene by the Sea is really nice but I haven't had much luck
getting hold of it.
I worship the ground Beat Takeshi walks on!

Takeshi's Castle was running through the 80's.
It's being re-run on Brit TV at the moment though!

its on TNT in the States. it's called something like 'super
extreme challenge' or something like that. it's pretty
funny. it's all dubbed like the Iron Chef.

I don't think it's out yet over here - Will definetly buy it
though - Even though it's got some mixed reviews - People
either 'get' his films or they don't.
Bit like Dead Man (with Johnny Depp), I thought that film
was genius, but half the reviews I seen didn't really 'get
it'.

MOST EXTREME ELIMINATION CHALLENGE!

Hilarious, it's dubbed into English but not dubbed in the
proper sense. They just make jokes over it that have
nothing to do with the original dialogue. I can't really
explain it, it has to be seen to be believed.

i thought dead man was excellent!

i love jarmusch...depp was great as (almost) always

also one of my favourite films

what are the negative reviews (dolls) about?
do they find it a bit cheesy perhaps?
can you post a link to those reviews-im really interested in
what ppl thought about it

http://www.midnighteye.com/reviews/dolls.shtml
That's actually a really good site - they aren't too into
the film but they sort of dig it...
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/Dolls-10002833/reviews.php
There's lots of reviews there - Very mixed bag...
I find a lot of people don't get what Takeshi's trying to do
atall.
There's a real Zen-like quality to his films.
They're all quite bleak and depressing on one level and
really quirky and funny on another... The story line and
acting are really not what his films are about - Those are
just things he uses to evoke emotions and thoughts about
life, death, loyalty, etc...
I think it's pure genius - Some critics just see it as a
weak story line and lots of pretty pictures.

I saw the movie in a small theater. A famous Dutch movie
critic first told us about an hour about Japanese movies,
then we watched the movie, and afterwards we discussed with
him for another hour about the true meaning of the movie...

It's quite different from any other movie i've ever seen,
but it's not bad!

It's really worth seeing that documentary on Beat Takeshi on
the Brother DVD (although I'm not too keen on Brother,
pretty mediocre I thought) - But there's an excellent 45min
documantary on him....
Really adds a whole new dimension to his work! It gives
Hana-bi, in particular, a real deep emotional quality -
Turns it into a VERY introspective piece of art, rather than
a film - The story line is just pure symbolism... Very
personal film..
Every one of his films is more of a study of human behaviour
and interaction than actually being about what it's supposed
to be about - And they've all got a lot to do with death and
his own personal life too...
I love that guy! I'm gonna send him a copy of my album as
soon as I finish it! He's my biggest inspiration.

"But there's an excellent 45min documantary on him...."

shame...i watched brother last night, but i wasnt that
impressed, so i doubt im going to get that dvd...perhaps if
i find it at good price somewhere

"brother" has same quality as other kitano films tho, not
much conversation and plenty of emotions

gonna see dolls again tomorrow!!! :)

I like Kitano but man I hate Dolls. It's so cheap and vulgar
and beautiful. The only good thing about it is the majikaru
biimu song.

ma me mi mu ma mo

ive seen it like 4 times,
and im always about to cry at the ending,
when she remember and finally they hug...
fucking amazing and beautiful and emotional film,
definetly one of my favourites.
a bit slow, not for everyone or any moment,
but also perfectly filmed and narrated and...
love!
