hi!
would anyone who knows some good Japanese films like to list & describe their favorite ones? and i don't mean anime or Bandai Corp. films.
i've only really seen about the second half of Yojimbo (1961) by Kurosawa, but i'm curious to see more films by Kurosawa & other prominent directors from Japan.

Seven Samurai is awesome of course. Toshiro Mifune is THE badass. Yojimbo is probably my favorite, and the ''sequel'', Sanjuro is pretty good too. And Roshomon... Mifune and Kurosawa were joined at the hip. Kenji Mizoguchi is also pretty good, but I'm really not familiar with many Japanese directors. You hear about all the Kurosawa films, but not much else...
And of course Battle Royale is nice.

Only see Audition if you're not fussed by gory stuff. Because they don't come any more absolutely revolting as Audition.

there's a bunch of directors you should hit up...
-Suzuki Seijun (ie: Branded to Kill) -Kenji Mizoguchi (yay ophecks... glad people can come up with more than just contemporary hyper-violence films... most of which are cool... but are far from the best things japanese cinema has to offer)
-Takeshi Kitano (ie: Kikujiro) -Hiroshi Teshigahara (Woman in the Dunes... one of the most beautifully shot films i've ever seen)
-Nagisa Oshima -Shohei Imamura (ie: the Pornographers)

virtually any movie by Takeshi "Beat" Kitano including: Hana-Bi Sonatine Brother Kikujiro
but not
boiling point, the only takeshi movie i don't like.
oh yeah, as mentioned above, Tampopo is great. not a Takeshi film but its hillarious. i've seen it many times and it always cracks me up.
