hia,

can anyone tell me more about this? is it a genre or is it
just elements of dreaminess/melancholy that can occur in all
kinds of music? (just downloaded m83's new record which is
pretty neat)

thnx

It was a real genre - but only had the spotlight during a
few years in the late 80s and early 90s. I think bands with
a similar sound today like Mercury Rev end up with the tag
'Neo-Psychedelic.'

Tell me more about m83, I've never heard of the band.

pitchfork review

nice to see you Inverted! thanks for the info. i was
wondering about it cause the m83 mp3 tags said this was
shoegaze, and i certainly recognised elements from some post
rock outfits

i've been into shoegaze a lot lately.

i wrote out a description of the genre. but then saw that
the site dariusgriffin posted did a well enough job
already.

its funny how many dumb sub-genre titles there are in
widespread use that have nothing to do with the music, and
often initially came from journalists making fun of the
artists (shoegaze, jungle, idm, trip hop, etc)

i was surprised they didnt really mention slowdive though,
they're probably my favorite band that gets lumped under the
title.

I remember it well....89/90/91.

The term 'shoegaze' referred to 'indie' groups of that
era(Ride,Slowdive,Lush,My bloody Valentine etc),who were
constantly looking down at their feet while changing the
effects on their guitar footpedals.

HTH

+;.

Adore the genere...I loved the idea of submerging pretty
vocals and harmonies and pop melodies beneath all that
droning fuzzy guitar noise.

My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive are my favourites.

don't forget the Cocteau Twins! One of my favorites.
Love spirals downwards isn't too bad but they are kinda hit
or miss.
there's also a ton of tiny unknown bands still doing this
stuff apparently. Lovesliescrushing and Elysium come to
mind but I really haven't explored it fully either.

Lovesliescrushing is amazing. Also Alison's Halo, Auburn
Lull...Galaxie 500...gosh..there are SO many.

m83's new album is pretty incredible. I can't the right
words to describe it.

I'm going to turn it up to 11 and let it wash all over me...

i like it a lot, too. on a white lake near a green mountain
is a seriously stunning piece. actually, the pitchforkmedia
review describes it pretty much spot on ;)

YES!

Thanks for bringing M83 to my attention, ''Dead Cities Blah
Blah Blah'' is incredible. An album so good, it salvaged a
horrible weekend. Oresome! And Pitchfork sure licked its
butt, eh...

Shouldn't it be called "sneaker-gaze"? I can't imagine
their choice of footwear would be polished, black
wingtips...

;)
