My 1st Csound Composition

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2003-07-10 10:52 [#00773076]

this is my first composition in csound.

i designed the instrument (a filtered granular/fm hybrid
synthesizer). all the different sounds come from this one
instrument.

The score is about 4 pages of numbers.

Im rather proud of this, since I did it all from scratch,
and I put much thought and effort into it.

But, beware, its very academic in nature...

anyways, enjoy!

Ooh, I'm itching to get home and hear this! What's the path
- you modulated your granular synth with a square / sine /
whatever wave, or you're modulating one granular generator
with another?

4 pages of numbers, yeesh... are there not tools to produce
the bones of a csound score from a midi track?

listening now....

I'm sure CSound is very flexible and powerful and all, but
it would totally, completely and utterly ruin the fun of
creating a track for me personally. I mean, to me making a
track is still something creative but this would make it
more of a science class. :S

csound is a text based synthesis program.

its arguably the most powerful synthesize available...
because it has really no boundries. Like, by typing in that
you want 100000 osscilators, you can have em.

And its free.

Just takes alot of learning!

It sounded interesting the possibilities are definately
there.

its a granular synthesizer, and an FM synthesizer, and im
merely multiplying the outputs together. If I added them, it
would just sound like a granular and an FM synth being
played at the same time, but by multiplying it, it becomes
one sound.

and yes there are ways to use it with midi sequencers... but
this, being our first composition, our teacher made it a
requirment to use the score file (the pages of #'s)

eXX- yes, its a VERY different way of writing. But I kind of
like it... you really gotta think... everything that is
happening, is 100% meant to happen. I like that control (im
a control freak when it comes to my music).

Its definately not for everyone.

However, more and more, people are making front ends for
csound. Graphical interfaces, to make it easier to use.

Interesting that it's very kcinsu-ish - your style really
comes across in something generated from pages of text.

The bleeps and blips remind me of some of the analog synth
tones from the Logan's Run OST.

Hm, I'd rather use absynth. It's more easy to use and you'll
have the same result.
this is a very usefull tutorial

I'm only saying this because I made a sound just like that
and it only took me like 15 minutes to create.

Its cool you think I have a disticnt sound... that my music
is recognizable...

hey Zeus...

I was at the Csounds site yesterday, and downloaded it and
all. I do programming at school and i thought this sort of
thing would be really interesting to try...

But I can't even really get started! I'll have to pick up
the Csound book because none of the tutorials are in a
step-by-step fashion. I hope I get the hang of it
eventually...

:-s

Btw: I'll check your tune when I get home... :)

s'ok! have you considered sending your music to some
computer game people? i reckon it would fit in quite nicely
with some weirdo soundscape stuff :)

good luck with it man!

It has a little bit of a hurdle you have to get over, to
understand how it all works... like the method to it... it
took me like 3 weeks to "get it", but just keep at it, and
dont get intimidated by the book (its big, and complex
looking with crazy numbers on the pages) but if you just
take it step by step, I think youll get it

no, cant say that though ever came across my mind...
although it is a really good idea, as a carrer
oppertunity... always good to have your options open!

cool, thanks.
i'm not the sort of person to give up easily! ;)

the whole idea of it fascinates me...
i mean, how the hell can a bunch of textual commands and a
basic program create these endless possibilities?

it's hell genious! :-)

I worship the guys/gals who made the music for Sonic the
hedgehog on Megadrive/Genesis and also those who made Toejam
and Earl's funky beats...

Come to think of it, that music might have inspired me to
appreciate electronic music ;)

I'm using Csound too, not made any whole tracks that are any
good yet, but I've used it to make loops/basslines that I
use in my tracks.

Can't comment on this track as I have no headphones here :(

eXX: Csound certainly lacks the immediacy of something like
floops or reason- not the sort of program to fire up when
you wake up in the middle of the night and want to try to
get a melody in your head down ;)

That's exactly what I mean. I admit that the power and
almost limitless amount of possibilities sounds very
attractive to say the least but this way I think making
music becomes more of a (yes this sounds cliche) brain thing
than something that comes from the heart. It's like playing
a real live instrument. You can put feeling and emotion in
the way you play it, but this seems such a cold and
scientific way of making music.

Oh and BTW my opinion on this way of making music does not
say anything about Zeus' track. I like it. :)
