Highways/Motorways with Tolls

On the news today here in the UK, they're planning on
building a stretch of motorway of about 29 miles in
length...and are planning to charge from what I head, £11
to go on it??!?!?

Whilst I was in Canada last year, in Toronto, each day we
drove there, friends of mine pointed out this massive
highway, that was practically new, and no one drove on it,
'cos it was a toll road! The road we were on was
gridlocked. What a waste! :( One story I heard that made
me laugh though, some granny used to go up and down it each
day, and managed to evade being caught....she had her
licence plate rigged she could flip it up to avoid
detection!!

Do any of you guys live near these 'super' roads, and
would/do you drive on them??

I think it's good. I was driving home from work today and
the traffic was terrible... even on saturdays and sundays at
12pm the traffic is insane. There's too many poeple in my
city and not enough roads. Maybe people would take the bus
more or soemthing if they had roads you had to pay to use.

theres a difference between what we should expect and what

but we dont deserve it, how things are are not how they

Im saying there's a reason why that highway that costs $10
was made.

only possibly, becuase no one fucking uses it, so why was it
put there in the first place? for a need that doesnt exist.

offline corrupted-girl on 2003-07-07 17:04 [#00770105]
Points: 8469 Status: Regular

No one uses it because they have to pay. they'd rather sit
in traffic for an hour on their way home and cause a buncha
polution then pay $10. Or they'd rather have to even deal
with all that then take the bus or ride their bike.

I think you're referring to the Birmingham Northern Relief
Road (orbits Birmingham), the first private road in England.

£11 is the price for lorries not cars (under £5, I
think?). Apparently the company that will run the road have
put such a high price on lorries because they don't want
them using the road -- they damage the surface and will
cause more maintenance and higher running costs.

That road has been controversial since its inception. The
Tories planned it and Labour said that it would scrap the
idea if it got in power, they got in power but then built
the fucker. There was some large scale protests during it's
construction.

it?? I think it is taking the piss a little.

Yeah, I'd resent paying £11 if I were a lorry driver. But
tolls are the future, whether we like it or not. They're
already talking about extending the congestion charge in
London -- within a few years you'd have to pay to drive
anywhere in the city. Transport Minister, Alistair Darling,
has also flirted with the idea of putting tracking devices
in ALL cars which could then be monitered by satellite and
you'd be charged according to what road you used. Bit
Orwellian, if you ask me.

I don't know what the answer is but there's too many cars in
this country already. Fuck knows what it will be like in 10
or 20 years time.

I think if public transport was nicer (cleaner and such)
many more people would use it. But the trains around here

I understand the principle of the scheme, but here in the UK
we get screwed by how much fuel costs for our vehicles, get
pay ridiculous Road tax each year, car insurance is not
cheap......then they start charging you mega bucks drive
into the city, where when you get there the car parks are an
absorbitent price!! :(

"I don't know what the answer is but there's too many cars
in
this country already. Fuck knows what it will be like in 10

or 20 years time."

My answer to the problem:
Ban parents from taking kids to school in the car- it's
amazing how much clearer the roads are in school holidays.
Kids can use the buses.

Greater provision of flexitime- if people were going into
and out of work at different times, the rush hour (read
"rush two and a half hours") would be far less of a
problem.

Greater implimentation of "Work at home" at least a couple
of days a week for office workers. My job could be done at
home quite easily and with the advent of comparatively cheap
internet access it makes sense for the company.

Congestion charges type "tax" on drivers who don't
need to use the car. Under 1 mile journey, you're not
a cripple? You can walk... I need a car to get to
work, there is no public transport, due to the comparative
isolation of where I work it would not be cost effective to
implement a public transport system. People in a position
such as mine shouldn't be charged, people who make
unneccesary journeys should be.

I don't believe public transport is the "ultimate answer"-
our train services are already overcrowded, and the number
of trains running is being reduced... coupled with the lack
of reliability and frequency of travel, it's not really an
option.

Only real solution is to lessen the population a bit-
non-retroactive eugenics (joking! :OP), tax breaks for not
having children (rather than for) having them,
tighter immigration laws, deportation for repeat offenders
in serious crimes, removal of NHS provision for fertility
treatment- there are enough children that need adopting
thank you very much, more roads, higher speed limits, more
efficient dealing with crashes (rapid dispatch of
photography team to take edivence in a crash while a
clearnce team arrives and removes the wreckage from the
road).
