alright, i want to become an historian. I like creating music as well. is it nuts to spend a few hundred dollars on a piece of music equipment if i don't plan on making it a career? do any other hobby musicians in here spend that much?

You don't need equipment, just spend some money on internet and pirate lots of music software

He he, I remember a couple of (non-pro)people here's studio list were easily above £5000...
I don't think there's anything strange about spending the money on a "hobby" as long as you can afford to- some people spend disposable income on fast cars, windsurfing boards, paragliding wings etc. all cost more than most pieces of studio equipment.
I don't spend loads on music making/equipment, but I've spent close to a grand on it this year. I can't see myself spending more than a couple of hundred next year though...

or you could be like me and raise money for music by playing online poker. I just find the tables with the chumps and handle them roughly.

well, you COULD make music for a lot less...
Equipment does not have to determine the quality of your music...infact a lot of electronic musicians(even Derrick May) started out because they could not afford real instruments.

What is there to elaborate? I enjoy studying history and I would like to be a professor/researcher/writer. I haven't decided if I want to study U.S. or European History. Both are damn interesting, but European history is, well, longer :)
I'm only 17 and I can't afford shite. I'm using a f'n PSR-79! its a freakin kiddie keyboard... i can't use it with a sequencer, cause it only has one channel... anyone here know of a good yet inexpensive sampler with at least 4 channels? on the upside, i've got a sequential pro-one... that thing's badass

so you're saying you want to make a career out of something else (the historian deal) other than a professional musician, even though you've gone out and spent a good amount of money on music equipment? nah you're not nuts, far as i can see you just like music tons :D

i presume your computer is reasonably up to date .. PIII ish ??
if so, i suggest you check out the latest computer music mag.
in it you'll find (free and full software): computer muzys 1.5 (vst compatible sequencer: i found it a bit fiddly but its free!!), cm-505 (synth), dr-202 (drum machine), ds-404 (sampler) and some other free stuff .. all vsti's and things. the mag here costs max. 30 NZ dollars, which'd be about 15 US ... should get you started anyhow.

Spending money on hardware is basically money down the tubes. That said a decent cheap late 90s sound module like a Korg O5/RW which has got a good bend range and plenty of effects will give you limitless possibilities providing you've got the imagination. I've got one of those. It provides cool drums and effects on general sounds. The rest can come out of the VST environment and general samples. But if you want to buy a piece of equipment a sampler like the Akai Z8 is money well spent, basically its like a pc but a bloody fast one and of course its a sampler too with tonnes of ram and storage possibilities.
