i like greatest hits in general tho.....so i may be in the minority!
ELVIS COSTELLO is sooooo good, i don't have any of his releases.....but i would buy a greatest hits from him COS he's got the voice and the GLASSES.....ehehhe

Most artists develop, and therefor it might be a good idea to listen to the album which has the tracks you like.
If it is good, then buy it, if it is "nah" then buy the greatest hits.
I regret buying Crowded House 1st album... it was not as good as I thought it would be. I do not regret owning it, but I'd rather have bought the greatest hits at first.
Then some artists make great tracks never released on single... I really like Placebo and most of their tracks are real good, not just the singles... so I buy all of their albums... hope you get my point! (still having high fever)...

I'd never buy a greatest hits album...I don't think I own one album where my favourite track on it has been released as a single.

I think greatest hits are cool sometimes... however, sometimes they can be a pain in the ass... for instance, I love Peter Gabriel, but I bought his greatest hits album as one of my first purchases of his stuff... anyways, most of the So album is on the greatest hits cd, except for a couple songs, including the awesome In Your Eyes... now, I love that song, and want it and So so bad, yet I feel like it's almost a waste to buy So seeing as I have most of the songs already...

even when greatest hits albums are filled with good songs... they are still the devil...
go for albums... get an early one, a later one, and the one with the most critical acclaim... nothing beats the vibe of a nice coherent album...

sometime criticallt acclaimed albums are over hyped or orverrated
or made for mass consumers! i usualy go read the negative reviews on amazon.com before the good ones to see why people didnt like the album and see if they have a legit reason or just
" no..dont buy this ,,,IT SUCKS!!!"

I never bother with greatest hits, I search the web and get the big studio masterpieces first. Some bands are so inconsistent that all you really need is a greatest hits, though...
''One'' is pathetic, Beatles-wise. 40 Licks for the Stones is much better, doesn't leave out as much... and it's twice as long.

when i make my own greatest hits cds of artists with shit loads of albums, i rarely use many of the singles. I like the other tracks usually. Greatest hits albums for sale are just singles albums, and singles are 3 minute money makers nine times out of ten

the only example i can think of with this myself, is with the pixies i think in this case, the best of... was a good idea because it cuts out all the crap tunes... (no offense to pixies fans) but for example if you got marvin gaye's greatest hits, then you would miss out... in his later druggy years, he made masterpieces that went ignored (see : here, my dear)

I bought Sounds Of Science, the Beastie Boys compilation. The only bad thing really is that all the best songs from Check Your Head are on there, so when I bought Check Your Head I was really disappointed to find that the songs I hadn't heard were generally mediocre.
