You should know the "computer buyers rule"- don't look at
other systems after yoursis bought for 18 months- you'll
only feel bitter... ;)

some reason. Can't explain it.

slashdot had an advance on it this weekend, but otherwise,
even then people didn't believe it.

After 10 years or more of windows, you can bet my next PC
will be just that, but in Mac form :)

The incredible jump the G5 will have on EVERY other desktop
out there is amazing. PCI-X slots are HUGE, 64 bit processor
finally in mainstream is HUGE, plus all the nice ammenities
you'd expect from Apple... USB 2.0 introduced, Firewire 800,
AGP 8X, and 8GB of RAM.

And for only 2K... good lord

Prepare for pricewars *helmet on*

offline alnuit on 2003-06-24 01:18 [#00754539]

Damn damn damn...with 8GB of RAM, 500GB of secondary
storage, an ATI 9800Pro and the Klipsch system the whole
thing costs a cool $8,700.

Anyone else notice that the comparison test PC machines
(which it beat) were dual processor xeons? They're normally
server grade processors and this desktop machine
beats them!

Looks like Apple hardware is on par with the fastest PC you
could put together today. If you notice from the benchmarks
on Apple's site, it beats the fastest P4 on some of the
tests while it lags behind on others. But it's great that
Apple has done some serious work to beef up their hardware.
Competition in the computer industry always helps those who
are making music/films/photos/design.

always.

I think you should take Apple's own benchmarks with a pinch
of salt;)

Wait for some neutral benchmarks before spooging on
yerself...

Some things people have reported on osxaudio.com...

"I've seen Logic (6.2 build 678 or something, dunno, too
much beer and wine) with about 30 Platverbs and a buttload
of other stuff, approximately 70-100 plugs. Processor load
on each was about 40%!!! No freezes."

"16 or 24 bit input and output
output samplerate 32kHz, 44.1kHz, or 48kHz
input samplerate - external clock mode: 32kHz, 44.1kHz, or
48kHz
input samplerate - internal clock mode: 16kHz- 96kHz

The analog audio i/o is up to 48kHz and 16 or 24 bit as
well!!"

"Damn 1000 stereo voices at once
1200 Fat Eqs from Logic at only 25% cpu laod on G5. This is
serious stuff"

actually, a few key apple developers (adobe being one) have
already had a G5 for awhile now! apple shipped about 200 of
them in G4 cases out to selected developers so they could
port their products to them.

the design is brilliant, you dont know shit about pc
design.

although i'm pissed.

even though it is using AMD's hypertransport for the bus,
they don't mention it.

neither the amd chipset for pci-x.

hmmm

and not a single mention of AMD or comparision benchmarks
against the opteron or althon (which > p4 in those tests)

muhahuahua funnay

but looks o so perty

5 plugins
Logic Platinum

Could handle 116 tracks with no problem

ONE HUNDRED SIXTEEN TRACKS

who the fuck needs 8 gigs of ram?

Also if you noticed this was a dual G5 configuration they
tested it against. So the battle is quite fair. It still
beats the crap out of the Xeon based server-stations though.

I need 8 gigs of ram...for without it many villagers
will starve and we will have to sell the children in orde to
be able to feed our children which would leave us in a
troublesome situation and their would be no children to feed
the food to and we would all have to eat the food then we
will be obese and die of heart related problems.

Yeah, I agree 8 gig at the moment seems quite hefty.

Maybe not today, I am sure someone will write something that
will need it in the future. After all, 8 years ago we were
of the opinion that 8MB was a plenty, and back in the day
('83-'84), people did not see the need for more than 64KB.

Nothing wrong in being future proof.

offline ecnadniarb on 2003-06-24 22:47 [#00755878]

That is why I said at the moment...and their are things now
that could easily use those 8 gig, such as rendering and
conversion of home made pornography into a digital format.

that:d
looks neat tho, apple is making big efforts, shame for not
mentioning AMD tho, i support these guys so much...
