Aphex - When you come to think about it...

no mate acid house was around in 87 before afx was around -
as for doing songs in the style of afx - that's just it
isn't it he can still do it one step ahead - it's not about
style .
and of course a/e have a marketing style - it's very clear
what they're about - theyr're stylish in their facelessness,
they've been copied massivleyt there -
there are loads of a/e copyists out there too - same assd
afx but both of them keep well ahead of the game thru sheer
talent.
26 mixes for cash is a load of remixes done for cash -
simple as that..

true to all you say except; wasn't aphex around before '87,
musically?
I mean I have the saw1 saying 85-92 ;P

But seriously, if aphex used richard d james as artist name
and had no logo, his music may not have come to my attention
because it wouldn't have "boomed" on all fronts like it did
now. Sure the music would have still been the same and he
would be signed and have a good carreer, but without the
name and logo it would have lost interest marketing-wise
because it wouldn't have had that edge it has now.
Say aphex twin and imagine the logo, now say richard d james
and no logo.
I know what appeals to me more, it just works that way.
Which brings us back to evolume's comment on good marketing.

yes exactly, this is why i qualified this assertion: he was
doing acid house before it was around... but he was not
doing it in the clubs...

thats honest and true.

i became introduced into idm with windowlicker video and a
freind who had ctd and wl on cd.

these albums stood out with sheer brilliance and i dont
think anyone did similar before...
so does rdj-album.
it was the "show" that cuaght the eye, but
my brain decided for if its good music after i got all his
stuff on mp3.
and most of his music IS good.

if we hadnt seen the clip i would not have bought any idm
and would still only listen to ragga, jungle and hiphop.

and for ae, it might be a matter of taste,
(i also like jazz) but ae bores me (what i heard).

ok, you are missing my point.

of course tatoo's have nothing to do with the quality of
music. of course shows and marketing have nothing to do with
music being good. all i have said is that afx has brought
the genre to a larger audience than Ae could have on their
own. you said it yourself, "watch
on AE - they are non-,marketing at all"

i actually don't like 26 mixes for cash that much. but i
think the title of that album was supposed to be
tongue-in-cheek; a sarcastic realization of his own
super-stardom.

and i think drukqs is excellent. its very respectable to me
that he would put all of that anti-pop piano stuff on there
(which i think the process he used to create it to be quite
innovative.) but i agree it's not his best work.

i did see afx live many years ago. his show was not
excellent either, but it was much better than Ae. He played
recognizable songs but was obviously tweaking them live. He
also had some dancing bears on stage with him. While i
admit, these kind of theatrics are silly and have nothing to
do with music, it at least made his music more accessible to
people in the audience who had never heard of him. It
showed his sense of humor and gave the people something to
relate to.

on a side note, maybe its just your English but you seem to
be getting kind of hostile. I just want you to know,
hyakusen, that i have no malice toward you, so there is no
need to be so defensive.

A well balanced product? It's all sound so just take that
shit to your head and enjoy it. If you nibble on every
little courner you can go on for hours about nothing. Just
listen to the sound and enjoy it man not take it to bits.

afx is good because afx is good... i go through music like
you wouldn't believe, and if afx weren't so goddamned
good... there's not a chance in hell that i would still be
listening to it... i used to love NIN... now i can hardly
ever listen to the fragile, or any of his work... cause the
lyrics are so cumbersome... (it's still decent... but you
get the idea)... AFX is not a tried and true product... he
is a musician whose work is transcendent of concrete ties...

and maybe it is that "everybody are saying that afx is great
visioner , great musician and he makes trends" . it is
bullshit for me. Christina aquillera is visioner too ,
because of her hears.

All music has it's place.

Wouldn't it be great if you didn't know who made any of the
music that was out? All record collections would be unique
and you could get on with enjoying and experiencing it. }:>

I'm spliffing out to Nightstick atm.

i do think that confield is the most forward album to be
released to date... but i would adamantly disagree that ae's
music is more deep than afx's... i love every release under
his Aphex Twin moniker... i cannot say the same for AE...

i sense that you are really hung up on the title of his
latest release... it's a silly joke that's all... is there
elements of truth in it? yes... he does make cash by
releasing this album... does that mean that he didn't put
love into the making of these remixes... i doubt it... but
even if that were the case... if it's good why do we care?

-as for claiming that we like afx because we are victims of
marketing... i really don't give a crap about marketing... i
could have his entire collection on mp3... and still love
it...
don't confuse your subjective preference for superiority of
taste

because we love what he has to offer... and as a matter of
fact i didn't buy this one anyways... not that that's the
point at all... and don't pretend like if there's a release
that you wouldn't check out if ae put it out.... would you
buy it automatically? maybe not... but it's a pretty lofty
assumption on your part to assume that everyone who buys afx
buys it because it is afx, and doesn't care what it sounds
like...

every day instead of going out and trying my best to get
involved in music. Makes you wonder if it is worth it at

It fucking is like but y'knah..

No marketing, i had to hunt for these sounds and I only buy
what I like. If he was making business out of us all he
could do way more repressings. Play braindance to my friends
via mix tapes and they all love the sound devoid of all
product.

no mystery?

i could say the same thing about Ae. Its just a lot of crazy
noise and reverb. no form or function. If you can't shake
your booty to it then what good is it to me (i'm joking
obviously)

but really, they are just two radically opposing styles and
both are interesting in their own respects. though now we

I'd say AFX has TONS of mystery... I have no idea what he's
going to do next after Smojphace... and I don't even know
what THAT will sound like. I have a very good idea what
direction the next AE will go...

And mystery in the other sense... well, I think his songs
are deep as fuck, I always hear new things every listen.
There's a lot going on in those mixes, with both parties.
