dont get me wrong-all the releases around "chiastic slide"
were fucking amazing, but, what was that one album called?
cornwell? cornfeld? corny crap if u ask me. there are no rdj
releases that are collectively shitty, and that's that.

WE are the music-makers,
And we are the dreamers of dreams,
Wandering by lone sea-breakers,
And sitting by desolate streams
World-losers and world-forsakers,
On whom the pale moon gleams
Yet we are the movers and shakers
Of the world for ever, it seems.

With wonderful deathless ditties
We build up the world's great cities
And out of a fabulous story
We fashion an empire's glory
One man with a dream, at pleasure,
Shall go forth and conquer a crown
And three with a new song's measure
Can trample an empire down.

We, in the ages lying
In the buried past of the earth,
Built Nineveh with our sighing,
And Babel itself with our mirth
And o'erthrew them with prophesying
To the old of the new world's worth
For each age is a dream that is dying,
Or one that is coming to birth.

If all Mr James had ever created was "IZ-UZ" he would still
have said more in that track than a 1000 autechre's ever
will.

ae will never be as melodically correct as afx. they are
trying too, too hard to sound "new" and "different". i think
they have the potential to be soooooo much better. i think
they are on too many drugs....maybe not enough!!!!

give your ass likely stiks
put it in
put in up
you will glidely pull out crap

after morning
after dark

would still

this thread wasn't about who is better (which is subjective
anyway and hence a pointless debate)
This thread was about whether or not AFX is an innovator and
whether he has contributed anything new to music. To say
that he has not is pure ignorance, whether you like him or
not. Read any AFX review, Read the heaps of interviews by
countless artists in dozens of different genres.
You can see his influence in new hip hop(see timbaland),
indy rock (see Radiohead, the Notwist, Postal service...),
metal/industrial (see NIN), techno, even fucking boy bands
(listen to n'sync's latest and tell me BT hasn't taken a
lesson from afx no matter how perverted).

like it or not, afx has contributed emmensly to contemporary
music. its a fact.

offline hyakusen from 8=============> on 2003-06-12 16:07 [#00738448]
Points: 7021 Status: Addict

for me like i said before he is still part of very
sofisticated machine called AFX Merchandise Shop
i dont think that number of artists who was influenced by
him makes him innovator
innovator nakes something new, not someone who is called as
innovator

seriously, lets get back on discussing styles or development

btw: unseenmachines poem is nice.

is it an actual lyric? if not it should be performed by

not only does someone have to make something new to be
considered an innovator, innovation is also reinventing and
revolutionizing.
all of these things AFX has done with music.
Shall we grab a dictionary?

this is getting silly.

the aphex myth was the creation of wanker music journalists
who had never heard of house till the KLF exoplded like a
truckload of smelling shit in their face...and then they
licked it up.

So I guess the whole Aphex myth is just that...a myth. But
that does not take away from the fact that he is a master
craftsman with a ear for melody and a love of noise. And a
dance music producer par excellence.

20 years later we still listen to the beach boys and the
beatles. 20 years from now, they will listen to Aphex the
same way. This does not in anyway make Aphex a Brian Eno or
a stockhausen. But it does make him a great pop music maker.
And thats what he is. Selleable, commercial, but not
disposable pure pop.

Forget the myth and enjoy the music.

the whole ae vs twin thing is ABSOLUTELY retarded. try to
step outside your four corners for a second and realise that
music is not a sport, ok? its not competitive. if you think
it is, youre not getting much out of it. you preffer
someone's work in general? fine. but as far as superiority
or claiming a territory on behalf of these people is
ABSOLUTELY CHILDISH. sorry for sounding preachy, but give it
up already! qut this rating system garbage and ENJOY IT
UNCONDITIONALLY. music is freedom, in so many ways. yet some
see fit to cage it.

Nobody does it better
Makes me feel sad for the rest.
Nobody does it half as good as you.
Baby, you're the best.

I wasn't lookin' but somehow you found me.
I tried to hide from your love light,
But like heaven above me the spy who loved me
Is keepin' all my secrets safe tonight.

And nobody does it better
Though sometimes I wish someone could.
Nobody does it quite the way you do.
Did you have to be so good?

The way that you hold me whenever you hold me.
There's some kind of magic inside you
That keeps me from runnin' but just keep it comin'
How'd you learn to do the things you do?

And nobody does it better
Makes me feel sad for the rest.
Nobody does it half as good as you.
Baby, baby, darlin' you're the best.
Baby you're the best.
Baby you're the best.
Baby you're the best.
Darlin' you're the best.
Darlin' you're the best.
Baby you're the best.
Baby you're the best.

Yes. I am surprised. Cor. Must go back and read them ALL
now...

And yes, Ae vs Aphex is a little silly (I

Stockhausen may seem to many to be rather pointless, but
think Raymond Scott, Bruce Haack - what Bruce Haack was
making in the 60s sounds like Acid House...

When I saw Aphex live (well, DJing) at Dedbeat 2002 he was
one of the worst people there... an hour of shitty jungle.
Really quite crap.

And I would agree, if it weren't for Aphex - bedroom DJs
wouldn't be half as good as they are. ICBYD is great but RDJ
I would hardly call innovative...???

i can't believe you can say that with a straight face man...
(albeit a skushed one)
just because someone doesn't fancy something like the RDJ
album doesn't change the fact that NOTHING SOUNDS LIKE IT

if aphex is not to be remembered as one of electronic
music's innovators... then i ask you who? you can pull just
about any name from contemporary techno... and none of them
come close... oftentimes one finds Afx's fingerprints all
over them... there were 2 innovators in this past decade:
afx and ae... both are fantastic mind bending artists...
both wield sounds which are unique beyond reprove...

the thing is that there are so many bands out there creating
original material, always breaking new ground, its up to
people like aphex twin to take the best out of all and
create a marketable, sellable on a larger scale album to get
out to people like me who got into ambient techno etc, thru
aphex twins big name, now i am stuck in low-fi no-name band
heaven, and i like it

A name that come close to Ae or AFX- FSOL? Hi-Fi electronic
music. The problem with Afx, is that - well, sometimes
(although not recently apart from the remixes on Cash which
are old) there are... well... mistakes.

Autechre's LP5 is an utterly astounding piece of electronic
music. SAWII is as well, but in terms of technique, and
concepts contained in each piece - LP5 is very special.

And when you think the Dr Who theme was created in the 60,
everything else just looks silly in comparison.

I have heard that Chris Cunningham actually had ... an
important influence on the music of Windowlicker - being a
musician himself...

There's a compilation - OHM- Gurus of Early Electronic
Music... lots of fucking good stuff. Holgar Czukay (from
Can)'s Boat Woman Song makes IDM sound so lame it makes me
cry.

Aren't we the ones creating the hype?
Imagine how boring life would be with 13 Ae's and 14 Afx's
Of course their music is different and it's all a matter of
personal taste.
If you don't like an album then don't buy and certainly dont
download it.
You don't HAVE to buy it...

there is definitely mystery to the twin. he wont even
release his best/weirdest/most original stuff so we haven't
heard the whole of him.
theres nothing wrong with being more commercial - in some
ways thats more of an achievement.

offline Amether from Kiel (Germany) on 2003-06-15 18:13 [#00742030]

I've never really known what to make of this "I won't
release my best stuff because I don't want people ripping me
off..." thing - sounds like empty promises more than
anything...

I mean - what COULD it be, that's so great (I guess that
would be the point though- that it's SO new and SO great...)
and why would he not want to - it is certainly true he's
a/the influence behind Radiohead/Notwist styleee things, and
a great deal other pop/rock...

I dunno, he could be just full of shit, and I guess that's
the point. A friend of mine -after we had been discussing
the downward Aphex Spiral- had the genius idea of finding
him at a concert, just tapping him on the shoulder and
saying "Look, you're trying too hard, mate..." To me that
just kinda summed up the problem. :)

for me it's pretty simple.

I have never heard any AFX that really surprised me.

lots of ae I have heard has surprised me.

does sound to me like people are a bit too hung up on the
"melody"-thing - if there isn't a melody, it isn't good
music, or even worse, it does not have emotion. bullshit,
ofcourse.

all music is just a set of sounds. you do NOT need melody to
convey emotions.

and the AFX-hype was indeed started by irritating
journalists and after that hungrily fed by AFX himself
(dishing up ridiculous lies).

but I think the myth is now being kept alive by his fans - a
new release is coming? DROP EVERYTHING! etc.
