NEW XLTRONIC COMPILATION!

i havent run this by the "higher-ups" yet, but i plan to
soon. perhaps they will weigh in on this thread.

i have been wanting to start a compilation on here for a
while. pretty much since i first joined. and ONE concept has
haunted me the whole time... the telephone game. it's a
simple concept. everyone should be pretty familiar with it:
one person whispers a message to someone, then they whisper
it to the next person, and it keeps going until the end of
the chain. at the end, the last person announces the
message. then they all inspect just what was said and have a
good laugh.

well, this is a little different. i think i have most of the
procedure worked out. here's what we're gonna do: i am going
to compose a track. it's not going to be TOO overdone or
saturated. an appropriate source, basically. then when i'm
done, i'm going to send the next person a sample pack
(zipped folder) and the finished track, so they can create
theirs. then when the next person is done, they will do the
same (and also send/post me a copy of their finished
product). hopefully, this will go fairly smoothly. of
course, all submissions will be strung together in order of
creation, so as to create (hopefully) a constant shift in
the track; melting from one into the next.

i'll say this right now: DO NOT join in on this thing if you
arent going to do one. im serious. if i dont think you're
being productive, or stalling, ill skip you. i dont want
this taking eternity, because one person is jerking around.
at the same time, dont sacrifice quality for speed.

i dont have any way of doing ftp, so unless someone wants to
host this thing, it's going to have to be done via email and
zebox/mp3.com/etc...
webmasters/mods: i would like this to be xlt vibes #6.

ummmm, lemme think... is there anything else that needs
adressed? any questions, etc. before i start taking names of
people interested?

start taking names. i gotta do the track, too. i just wanna

this will take a few weeks just to get started, so (assuming
you arent first on the list) it shouldnt conflict with any
comps/prior engagements/etc. like teapots radio comp.

it's a cool idea and I'm up for the challenge ,.tho I think
it could be very timeconsuming,.

if I want to get something right I'mma spend serious time on
it.

yeah, like i said, as llong as you're actually working on
it, i dont care if it takes a while... though i think maybe
there will be a timeline made up here by me pretty soon. it
will take awhile to complete once started (waiting on
tracks, arranging, etc.), but im hoping people will realise
while doing it that doing a 16 year long track is gonna hurt
the flow of the compilation.

i figure giving people 2 weeks is good. if a person needs
more time, ill give it to them, but i want to know peeps
arent sticking it to me like with titsworth's (i think it
was his) comp.

i am actually intending for this to see the light of day.

i know who id like to ask to be on this, if they will... and
im sure they know who they are. i encourage anyone and
everyone to join in.

doesnt have to be long, in fact maybe shorter pieces are
they way to go on this. id like to get as many people on
here as possible in 80 minutes.

well, im hoping to make this thing cd length, so 80 minutes
at the longest. you wont have to host the packs, those peeps
can make, send and dispose of on their own (plus it'll keep
in mysterious; ie: the only person other than me who should
hear my track before its done is whoever is next in line,
etc.)

basically, its for their convenience. me, i have no prob
doing this all email and zebox, but i know some people will
complain, or will need us to work around it. anyway, thanks
for the offer of help. ill keep everyone posted.

Q4Z2X: its fine. not a problem. ill probably do more
fact-finding on who is in this thing, and have the people
with 56k connections going near the end (if this is
acceptable to all parties), basically to keep momentum going
and everyone working.

ok. just so everyone is clear here, i am going to have you
guys fill out this simple form (in it's entirety) and
email it to me. do NOT post it here. compliance with
this will help me to organise this thing more fluidly. it's
relatively painless. ;)

* nickname on xltronic:
* artist name:
* email addy you wish to be contacted through:
* internet connection speed:
* a few short questions
1) can your mail client handle the transfer of large files?
2) list any/all URL's i should know about
(zebox/mp3.com/etc.)
3) do you have ftp capabilities?
4) do you forsee any difficulties on your part in
participating in this project? (time constraints, cpu
problems, etc.)

i appreciate you guys filling this out. i am looking to make
this thing simple and fun for everybody, but i need your
help in this matter, considering some of the unusual tasks
this project entails. thank you, and i'll keep you all
posted as thing become more concrete.

you should have the people arranged in a way so that the
songs on the cd get progressively more abstract, like have
the artists kind of arranged by strangeness

mm-mm-mmmmm. cordon bleu is nummy.

ok, i had some 'net problems the past 36 hours, but i just
now recieved my emails... WOW! the response to this has been
VERY possitive! i have recieve alot more forms than i
anticipated. i hope we can all have alot of fun on this
project, and the results should be VERY interesting. kinda
like that michael jackson video where those peoples faces
morph into one another. hehehe but i digress...

i am working on the template track now, and am waiting on
the go ahead from the powers that be. hopefully, i can get
the participant order and send out my sample pack to
contestant numero uno sometime this weekend. i'll keep you
all posted. those who submitted forms, you'll get word when
i get word. those who haven't, you can still join in.

what if someone makes a track, and he calls the next member,
who records the track as he plays it through the telephone..
and repeat it as much times as we have members. We will then
send the noised up track to Aaron Funk, who will make a
track out of it and pay us cash for the idea.

offline tibbar from harrisburg, pa (United States) on 2003-06-12 10:55 [#00737964]

JAroen: it is interesting that you mention this, considering
NO ONE is going to do that very thing on this comp, or ill
personally show up on their doorstep to beat them with a
mallet about the groin area. now that THAT bit of business
is out of the way...

i have catalogued all of the forms i recieved so far. i have
had support on this idea from 2 knights of this here round,
and i will be emailing mr. zero personally this very
day!!!!! hahaha

as you can tell, im pretty psycked about this, and alot of
you seem to be too. there seems to be some caution on some
members parts, which i understand. its a somewhat lofty
idea, and perhaps a bit more grand than the standard
compilation. but i digress...

there has been concern expressed about the bitrate of soem
of the data being degraded as this goes on down the line.
let me be a bit more clear on some of the "rules":

1) if everyone works in higher bitrates (above 128k.
prefferably 192k, if possible) corruption of data shouldnt
be a problem. i might be wrong... does anyone know some cold
hard facts on this issue?

2) you CAN make your own sounds/parts from scratch. it is
SUGGESTED and RECOMMENDED that you try to make the stuff
thats handed to you the meat of the piece, but condiments
are nice too.

3) not everyone is working from the same sound packages, as
items are added or subtracted from the pieces. for example:
a drum track from song A might not even make it to song B.
therefore, it cannot possibly make it to song C, as that
member "has blinders on" to anyone else's work.

thall those things considered, i cant see bitrates becoming
deteriorated in any pertinent way. like i said, i might be
wrong. if so, someone please speak up on this. anyway, im
going to go write phob the "official" plea to sanction this
project under thee shield ov thee confederation of XLT!

good day... to YOU.

Sorry, I can't spare the time to do this at the moment, but
I'd like to as it's a great idea. I agree with you being
strict about the time limit.I'm still pissed off with
whoever is holding up the XLT massacre. I'd be even more
annoyed had I done something for it and a person after me
caused the death of the project...
