vsnares: teh thief

i decided to make this topic after horsefactory mentioned
elsewhere that 'the track "dismantling 5 years" on higgins
ultrafunkzksldskjsd you'll notice that for the first few
minutes its essentially nanou2 done on a synth instead of a
piano'.

it seems that any time you hear a melody from him, that's
not supposed to be a sample, he most likely stole it.

i haven't heard too much but these are some of the melodies
that he's stolen.

dad - acroyear2 by autechre
we are oceans - tundra by squarepusher
dance like you're selling nails - come on my selector by
squarepusher

now feel free to add your own. i find it even funnier that
he's taking his melodies from idm artists instead of obscure
sources. pretty pointless topic but it gives more for the
people who hate this guy to complain about :D

of course he messes with them a bit to make them sound
'unique', but nowhere near enough to cover it up. that's why
when you hear them they sound like they're good, but
something is a bit off.

thanks for noticing, glad you agree - its pretty bad huh? im
checkin out the other ones now.

there was this pop-dance track out some time ago, planet
funk - chase the sun it was.. not that it's a good track or
anything.. but vsnares COMPLETELY ripped this off with dance
like you're selling nails. you can check an mp3 sample of
the planet funk track here:

http://64.74.112.74/~ukdance/vst1794.mp3
[sorry i dont know how to do links]

the melody im talkin about starts at 00:58
heh. listening to it now, its quite unbelievable really

it's at 1:41 in the snares track.

Points: 14867 Status: Regular

and yeah, you're right too, the start of dad is kind of like
a slower version of acroyear2 with a few note changes..
tundra/we are oceans are similar except snares again has
changed a couple notes

i am starting to lose a lot of respect for him

offline Morton from out (Netherlands, The) on 2003-06-09 15:08 [#00733547]

i don't want to add one, i'd like to erase some, i'm sorry i
find this nonsense

'dismantling five years' may look like 'nanou2' but the
chords are really different, also notice that 'nanou2'
starts with parts of 5 chords that repeat, 'dismantling 5
years' has parts of 4 chords .. it's really not the same

i'm sorry but i disagree with all your 3 comparisions too, i
won't go into detail but the melodies really aren't the same
imo ('come on my selector' is all 4/4 for instance, 'dance
like you're selling nails' has a | 4/4 | 4/4 | 4/4 | 2/4 |
schedule for its melody)

i for one do not buy this

what if he DID come up with something like that?

chripes

sine wave sounds A LOT like "a warm place". sine wave being
a mogwai song. a warm place being an nin song

the guy who made sine wave hasnt even heard a warm place.

there is a difference, in all the vastness of melody it's
pretty much impossible that snares could write a melody so
similar to the planet funk track without hearing
[plagiarising] it

since 2001 he released over 100 tracks..
listening to all of these may convince you that he
can come up with his own melodies and beats (in fact
he's more original than artists using 'amen' and other often
used breaks imo)

or maybe you can tell from every track where he took the
melody from..
you could name whatever you like and say 'yeah he changed
the melody though'
a lot of melodic tracks look a like if you change the
melodies

:) despite our disagreement no offense ey? i just don't
understand what this vsnares bashing is good for all the
time

i like this tidbit mp3 you posted! =)

but yes it's completely stolen... rah, they could have sued
him!! such a shame. -_-

or maybe it was like a hommage to this track, and he got the
authorization, dunno... nothing's mentioned on the liner
notes anyway!!

(someone post this on the planet mu board to see what
happens, if vsnares sees it and ignores it...?)

totally stole it. He even stole the lyrics from Autechre.

And "a warm place" is actually "Crystal Japan" by David
Bowie. Reznor found out after the RykoDisk version on Bowies
"Scary Monsters" came out and had the rare "Crystal Japan"
single on it. I don't think Trent did it intentionally nor
do I think Aaron Funk takes melodies intentionally either.
There are only so many notes/chord progressions, simularites
are bound to happen.

my .02¢

congratulations! you've all come to the realization that
there is no such thing as originality! sure, it's clever to
trace a melody to a similar melody from 5-10 years ago...
but i would think you were cooler if you could reference all
the chord progressions that thieving Snares fellow jacks
from the classical composers of the last 500 years... while
your at it, i'll give you a gold star for tracing THOSE
melodies to their roots as sheet music hieroglyphics,

Actually Jan Wernner wrote that same exact post in a 1978

"we are a bit of what we hear"
Rab Rudshtein

i think that, as a musicmaker, there is always a bit of what
we already heard somewhere in all the music we do.

vsnares is an extremely productive guy, so complete the
equation by yourself.
