do you have any favorite non-soundtrack compilations? i'll
list mine in a minute!

comps are great for getting exposure to new artists and
collecting rare tracks from your favorites..

Yup comps are fantabolus =)

I dig all the Trojan Box Sets .
Five boxsets later and i know a hella lot more about
jamaican music.

And i would like to thank my friend Reacta and his silly
Jungle compilations for gettin me into electronic music in
the mid 90's.

No More Prisons - solid charity album for an important cause

House of Distraction - schematic

Immediate Action - hefty records 2cd compilation of various
limited edition singles on the label.. so solid. t.
raumschmiere, slicker, and savath + savalas tracks stand
out

The Lyricist Lounge, Vol. 2 - underrated rawkus comp, right before they
turned shit

SoleSides Greatest Bumps - nothing but classics from dj shadow,
blackalicious, and fam!

Quannum Spectrum - newer tracks from the quannum crew..
another solid comp, with shadow producing almost half of the
tracks, including the incredible "divine intervention" w/
divine styler and "storm warning" by latyrx

Red Hot + Riot: The Music and Spirit of Fela Kuti - another amazing and heavily slept-on comp..
almost all of these are fela kuti covers, check the
tracklisting.. a kelis original "so be it" with esthero's
producer doc and dead prez, talib kweli, and bilal teaming
up w/ fela's band to record a new version of "schuffering
and shmiling" are the highlights for me. great tribute to an
amazing artist, and another charity album (aids research and
treatment)

just a few off the top of my head..

thievery corporation - dj kicks
-actually a lot of the mixes in the dj kicks series are
fucking tops.. dj cam, k&d, kid loco, NoW

dj spooky - modern mantra
dj/rupture - gold teeth thief
carol c - first impressions
thievery corporation - sounds from the verve hi-fi

Songs in the Key of X: Music from and Inspired by 'the X-... - barely a soundtrack since they didn't start
using the songs till the cd came out.. just really solid,
with a lot of exclusives (as far as i know). highlights for
me are the soul coughing and (believe it or not) sheryl crow
tracks, and the hidden "track 0" nick cave collab w/ the
dirty three

Urban Renewal Program - wow, another slept-on comp.. this one is
full of hip-hop, "idm", and "post-rock" bangers, including
like 6 tracks by or featuring prefuse 73.. the mighty
tortoise make an appearence as do themselves, rjd2, and dj
food, but miho hatori (of cibo matto fame) just slaughters
it with the prefuse laced track "night light".. if only all
music hit the spot like this track does

Warp 10 series.. all of them slept-on but my favorite is the
crimininally underrated Warp 10+3: The Remixes.. it's two discs full
of exclusive or rare remixes from a hugely diverse lineup,
and almost every remix is off the hook.. total classics
reinvented by some fresh faces, like PBO, Four Tet, Mogwai
(that Link remix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), etc. the only thing
that could've made it doper would be if AFX, LFO, and Ae
pitched in with some new remixes.

Xen Cuts - comprehensive and affordable Ninja Tune
primer with some really nice tracks

the next few i'm aiming to check out are Songs In The Key Of
Z, A League Of Their Own (new indie hip-hop compilation),
Excursions In Ambience: Third Dimension, and OHM: The Early
Gurus Of Electronic music

and Cosmic Forces of Mu if it ever goes back in print :/

it's pretty good, it's got short bios for everyone that made
an appearance, Excerpt "31 | 69 C. 12:17:33-12:25:33 PM NYC"
is kind of annoying though. it's two tones played a small
amount of frequency appart for about 7 minutes
