i suggest that we install a language filter so people don't
see swearing and therefore don't swear themselves

man, FUCK that -- if you don't wanna see swearing, sure have
a setting so that certain cuss words don't appear to you -
but no way make it mandatory and blanket.

I like how E (from eels, yes) puts it:

"I don't trust people who don't use profanity. If people
make an effort not to say 'fuck' or 'shit,' et cetera, I
feel like they're not being real. Come on, this is how we
talk. It's not hurting anyone. Who cares? I've felt that way
since I was a kid, being around other kids' families where
people would have to put a dime in the cookie jar if they
used profanity. What was that about?"

And people would end up using stupid things like "f*ck",
"sh*t", "saus*ge", which are of course a lot less offensive,
thanks to the magic "*".

i never say stronger words like 'fuck' or 'cunt' but words
like 'bitch'' or 'bastard' are ok....now as for 'shit' and
'arsehole' thats kind of a grey area....

if you cant express yourself more creatively, perhaps the
problem isnt people who dont swear (or try not to), so much
as it is you.

offline tibbar from harrisburg, pa (United States) on 2003-05-29 16:06 [#00720035]

i especially am put off by females who swear alot. it's
quite annoying. it kinda ruins the whole innocent and
delicate thing for me. not very feminine at all. i prefer
the company of someone who can express themselves beyond the
usual "four-letter words". it sticks out like a sore thumb,
every couple of words... F*** has become the new "um" or
"uh" or "like". it's just a placeholder anymore.

i remember how cool i thought it was when i was little to
hear swearing. it was this verbotten thing. taboo. nowadays,
i just think it's lame to hear someone using excessive
profanity. it makes you seem unintelligent, honestly.

anyway, that's just my 2 cents.

offline Jarworski from The Grove (United Kingdom) on 2003-05-29 16:34 [#00720097]
Points: 10836 Status: Lurker

Banning swearing would just be retarded, of course you don't
need to curse to express yourself adequately but it adds
colour and expression to what can be flat and dull text. And
this is an Aphex board, not Britney Spears dot com - we're
all adults here. No wait, we're not are we?

I find the quote about not trusting someone that doesn't use
profanity interesting. The movies that have the most
profanity in them are generally those involving gangsters,
heists, murders, prositution etc. Most filmmakers have
enough sense to realize that the most trustworthy characters
in a film are going to be those that use profanity the least
if at all. If art truly imitates life, and I think it
generally does, I would think this says something quite
different. Just my observation.

you are a long way from home if you start comparing real
life to the movies and make conclusions based on that about
life.

you are talking about the coding of storytelling - this has
little to do with real life. if gangsters et al use a lot of
profanities in movies this says something about gangsters in
movies and how we expect gangsters in movies to behave.

tibbar- i agree totally with your '2 cents', swearing has
lost its purpose nowadays...people swear because it becomes
naturally to them not because they think the words are
suitable....however that only applyes to speaking, typing on
a board or chat room is different, i cant see why people
swear here so much.....

anyway I dont think this thread was to deal about the
vocabulary we use... it was more about warning people not to
attack other people... it was about our freedom to post our
free opinion but not to say it insulting another person just
because we dont like him/her or because he/she doesnt think
like us.

example:

this track is fucking great... its da shit
(no problem with this)

you are pure shit, fuck off and go away
(this is starting a problem)

I think its easy to understand

Is it really so hard to express yourself without using
insulting words (or maybe better put: words that others
might interpret as an insult).

you're fucking right nacmat!
it all depends on how you say stuff to people, recent
occasions proved that people don't really need cusswords to
insult people.

anyway, we will not install a language filter, it really is
retarded IMO.

to string 2 sentences together, and the ridiculous slang
that everyone is supposed to understand

don't be so prejudiced - some people just swear a lot, so
what? It's not like it's as annoying as people saying
'whatever' or using 'so' in the modern way, or ending every
sentance with a question mark.

hah, I have a funny story about that, Paul..

we all know the wonderful "stfu".

a friend of mine, a real computerfreak, a real
internetfreak, couldn't figure out what the hell it means..

so one day he thought, "oh, it must mean stupid fuck
you..!".. as in: "you are a stupid fuck you!!".

he found out the real meaning not long after.

our mirth at his misunderstanding was great, I can tell
you.

ah yes, I will now recline to the Reading Room, where I have
some nice cigars and will tell some more fascinating
anecdotes.
