Shit i just saw the movie and read some interviews with the id guys.
"we don't want to make just a game. the player is a part of it all. we want to break the border between game and reality. you survive the most horrible nightmare ever."
fuck that's insane. fuckin paranoia. i couldn't get through the demo of system shock 2 cause it was scarry and now that ?
do we need such games ? i mean i can think that the suicide rate will hop over 300 % after this game is released.

you misunderstood me. i didn't mean that someone after playing that game gets his gun and shoots himself (but i could imagine that).
i just mean that this game really has the grafical potential. i mean this is pure horror. games just get more realistic. i think this has some influence on people.

In our genetic past, warfare, violence, being scared, etc. were such a huge part of our evolved psyche that we need to recreate that environment just to feel normal. I want to play this game pretty bad. I want to again play doom2 and all the additions like the master levels but they don't work on this stupid computer for some reason.

well... sprites is what I mean. A lot of genres have been improved by 3D gfx but it has resulted in that 3D games are pretty much all alike, and some genres have died (like platform games)...
Some games work better in 2D than 3D but aren't being made cause "everything has to be in 3D". Kinda sad.
Kills creativity from scratch.

now, back in the 70's and 80's and shit, video games sucked.
well, i guess theyre known as "classic" games now, but bare with me....
if people who played games such as pacman and space raiders can become serial killers and murderers, what will become of the kids who play GTA £, Doom and Medal of Honour and stuff?
Weaklingchild disclaimer: I'm not having a dig at video games in any way, i'm simply suggesting that, people, especially children do get influenced by games they play, tv they watch and so on.
yes i KNOW they shouldnt be playing doom 3 becuse it is for 18 year olds, but how many parents give a shit about these things anyway?
please dont hate me....

hm that seemed very offensive. i don't have a problem with separating live from entertainment. though i have to say that after watching the movie "the ring" i couldn't sleep for two days. it really scared me.
the thing why i opened this thread is, that some people really are influenced by stupid pc games.
and then there's another thing. as i said, nobody was influenced by old games cause they weren't REALISTIC. now doom3 looks almost like a movie. and in a few years when you'll have your 3d stereo glasses on your head and virtual reality will be almost as real as reality, how do you want to define then that the game is over.
i know i watched to much movies with such a story and that the things i'm talking about maybe be really not realistic, but they of course might happen.

they said years ago that we would be all into virtual reality and alas it never happened. Maybe many many years things will look more realistic and you will have more of a cause to shout "panic" but really its just a game.
As for "The Ring" - i really cant understand what the fuss was about. I know loads of people who think the same as you though. Its all about mindset i suppose.
To be honest i dont know anyone who is influenced by computer games but i know loads of people who have been influenced by films.
so do we ban films as well ?

I disagree, people's perception of "realistic" changes as technology improves... People said Colin Macrae Rally 1 was realistic- look at it now, it's patently not. Look at GT4- people say that is "photo realistic". Look at the pictures objectively- in the frame of mind, is this real or is it CGI? still frames are hard enough to render to look realistic, let alone movement, particularly of humans. People have an inate ability to recognise the way humans move, hence it's one of hardest thing to do accuratly in 3d graphics.
Doom does not look realistic in the sense you could mistake it for real life- it has good graphics, by today's standards, but the subject matter alone should allow all but the mentally ill to distinguish between reality and the game.
There was outcry about GTA1 and it was close to getting banned. Look at it now, everything about it looks like a toy...

Argh! Personally, I hate shooting games. Some of them are okay (I suck at them... I only work well with Mario & Co. ^_^) like the ones where there is a purpose for shooting the people (like theres a plot and there are specific bad guys and a reason they are bad!), but the shooting people for the hell of it games make me almost uncomfortable. I look at Spookyluke and hes "shooting" someone and going "Yeah yeah got him look at the blood thats awesome!" and I think to myself... "Im dating THIS guy?"
My sweet gentle Spookyluke disappears when he plays this game. :|

Yeah, PC games like Far Cry, among others, have caught up and killed that ''holy shit'' factor that Doom and HL had going for them 12-24 months ago. And I'd be shocked if they got Game of the Year over Halo 2 anyway, or if Doom was half as scary as Silent Hill 4.
Even console games gained a lot of ground, graphically... obviously the 128 bitters will never look as good as Doom 3 on a high end PC, but a game like Riddick compares to Doom very favorably, especially on big home theater systems. So the jump just isn't as impressive as it could have been. The videos still look great, still probably the best looking games ever, but it's not a big deal anymore. They'll have to be judged on their gameplay now, fittingly.
Good news, Half Life 2 is getting closer... they've reportedly worked out 99% of the bugs, and it's getting nearer to Gold status (100% complete and ready to ship). But who fucking knows.

Well yeah, I didn't say it's GOLD (I wish), I said they're getting closer. A couple of weeks and they think they'll have the bugs worked out. IE, nearer to gold.
Redundant statement I guess, of COURSE they're getting nearer. They ain't getting farther!

this may be old news, but:
Todd Hollenshead, id's chief executive, said Doom 3 will require:
• A 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500.
• 384 megabytes of memory. • Two gigabytes of hard drive space. • An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better.
If your existing rig doesn't meet these specs, here's a guide to beefing it up to play Doom 3 in all its gory glory.
