i think for me it's when you know the music is techno, but it can't be classified well into groups. Even though it may be drill and bass, it's different than the other musicians in the category.

Until The Altogether I would have said that they were ... somehow they seem to me to me the kind of band that knew their stuff back in the day when they made the masterpiece trilogy of "The Brown Album - Snivilization - In Sides". But now they seem to be content just hashing out orbital-by-numbers tunes. But the older stuff is still some dope shit.

magazines record shops and buyers who neded to create a new (smug as fuck) genre created the term idm - it was realyjust areaction to tired hardcore around 93 ish - unfortunatley the idm genre is more purposeless boring and confused than hardcore ever ws so i wouldn't worry about it.

Does it matter wether or not one could label orbital as IDM?
I don't really care for labels whatsoever, they're only convenient to describe something to someone who hasn't heard it yet, but with IDM you still are left clueless as it's a real varied genre.

I truly truly hate when I'm explaining what kind of music I listen to. I've chopped myself down to sayin I listen to "instrumental electronic" because if I say techno they think "ooo the repetive rave shit" or if I say IDM they think "eh?".....ah well next time I'll just say I listen to "REAL music." :)

nacho, if you want orbital to be IDM, they're IDM. i saw a kid on here call godspeed you! black emperor IDM a few weeks ago, so i guess anything goes.
now if you want my opinion on what makes something IDM--a very loose and poor description for a type of music--all you have to do is click here. it's explained in thorough detail.

I really can't classify them, and no I don't mind genres all that much, order is good.
In-Sides I would think qualifies as that, but the Brown Album was more Trancier while the Green album was straight up early 90's techno.
I never knew what genre to stick them into other than the broad "electronic" category.
I can't even classify my favorite group :[

oh man i just love orbital, they're like, the classic of electronic music...
i think their albums should be divided into 3 categories:
1. TrancyHavoc-like - the albums not fast or hardcore but which make you think of trance or something like that
2. Marple - the albums that are not too mellow but bring to mind.
3. Nebula - albums which are SOOO fucked up, so just buy them and listen to them NOW

actually, in my mind, I've always figured that Orbital was one of the groups that initiated the whole intelligent dance music thing... and then Aphex Twin, and all these guys were lumped in there too... but I've read lots of stuff calling Orbitals music intelligent dance music, so I figured this type of music, and any other dance group like orbital, were the ones who really sparked the whole thing...
