So who here thinks we was great? His flicks are dated, but still some are masterpieces imo.
Funny that his face was always shown for a few seconds in the films he directed (in a crowd mostly). In 'Lifeboat', he wasn't among the nine survivors from the ship, but his face appeared as a photograph in a newspaper in the bottom of their lifeboat. :)
Also funny; there was a woman who complained that the shower scene from 'Psycho' frightened her daughter so much that the girl would no longer shower. Hitchcock said: "Then Madam I suggest you have her dry cleaned."
I remember watching 'the birds' when i was very little, i thought it was pretty scary. I saw it again a few years ago and it wasn't the same of course (pretty dated).. still i enjoyed watching it.
Any opinions?

Yes they are dated, but not in a funny twee way, they're still quite scary IMO.
I really like North by North West, The Birds and Psycho. I've seen a few others, but those ar ethe ones that stick in my head.
www.Play.com have 2 for £20 on Hitchcock DVDs at the moment so check it out.

My favourite film of his is Frenzy. It's a dodgy late sixties effort and there's a hilarious rape scene in it. The guy's getting stuck in about this woman and he repeats, mantra like - "lovely....lovely.....lovely....lovely". My mates still use that patter when we spot a nice looking chick in a pub. Anyway, once he's shot his bolt, he strangles her. When I first saw it, I must admit that I found it rather arousing.

Apart from the shite cheesy ones, there were some really good ones. Rope springs to mind - as does the aforementioned strangers on a train. And of course psycho.

i was in Phoenix once visiting my mother - and we were drinving to a baseball game (fucking shite sport to watch) when we were cruising toward a big RKO-type radio mast in the distance. Mothe tells me "this is the same road yer wan drives up in Psycho at the beginning when she´s stealing the money". It made my holiday!
Love "Vertigo" and "Rear Window" too!

no, but it IS an excellent excellent film! VERY gripping...also, Inherit the Wind is another film not by Hitchcock that is very excellent, as is To Kill A Mockingbird - the link being that they tackle social issues.

I still haven't seen Rear Window, looks absolutely excellent from the clips I've seen. I was tempted to buy that on play.com, but there wasn't another one I really wanted.
The view from the back of my flat is just like the one in rear window, must be about 150 windows opposite.

Psycho is great, Norman Bates reminds me of me, teehee. I really wanted that car to sink in the bog. Funny, that.
Vertigo is good too, Kim Novak is purrdy and Jimmy Stewart is infinitely loveable.

well I mean, I didn't really enjoy the book as much as the movie... I mean, the story is a great one, it's just for me it was better as a movie then book... apparently the character Atticus Finch was voted the best hero of the century or something by some publication I believe...

i loved Rear Window (laughed at bob mcbob's comment tho....ehehhe)
the birds and north by northwest
i've read some stories about how controlling he was of the actors in his movies......i bet his life story is quite an interesting read!

just saw 'Dial M for Murder', he proved again to be the master of suspense, up until the end i was hooked.. only the very end was a bit strange imo (the last minute or so),
the guy is like 'ok you got me, we could use a drink now.. anyone else?'
still a strong plot and directors work :) it could almost have been a play, nearly the whole film takes place in the same room, but it doesn't get boring at all, on the contrary, suspense is build up like only he can :)
