Ultimate ambient topic

This topic is meant for a sirious disscussion about
different styles and artists in beatless or almost beatless
music.
I didn´t find any good one eith the search function so I
thought doing an on one.

My problem: How to find good ambient music?
I have Lifeforms but I find it quite silly and too much
beat.
I have Music for airports, it is good but a little bit too
New Age!
I have SAW2, and it´s simply genious!
I have Pan Sonics Kulma and there is a lot of nice ambient
scpaes, but the album is still not a real ambient album.
I got Vletrmx and it is also a masterpiece!
Now I am sure there is a lot of dark or in other ways nice
and good real ambient albums. How about Biosphere? Or On
Land?
Please recommend and discuss beatless music and don´t
forget to describe how they sound and feel!
thanks a lot in advice!!!

they play all ambient of various forms - depends on the
show, really. but worth checking out.

also, i think it was yesterday or something, i posted a
topic on this board about keith fullerton whitman (aka
hrvatski) - he's got some decent ambient production going
on.. check him out on soulseek or something..

My favourite ambient stuff is:
Biosphere - Substrata (Number 1 in this list for a reason)
Budd/Eno - The Pearl
Jochem Paap (Speedy J) - VrsMbntPcs 95-98 Volumes 1 & 2
Any of the "Pop Ambient" compilations on Kompakt - each one
is incredible.
Gas - Pop (wow - if you haven't heard this one, get it
now!)

Check those out.

Oh - the sound and feel - thing

Substrata - cool and icy
The Pearl - soothing/melancholic
VrsMbntPcs - like SAWII but more relaxed
Pop Ambient Compilations - pretty much as the titles suggest
- catchy ambient - more groove - still no beat
Pop (by Gas) - a fall day in country - breathtaking

And the website sleepbot.com, an excellent ambient
resource. Very in-depth, if you take the time to explore the
site I'm sure you'll be turned on to many new things.

dood... try out some Biosphere either download songs or get
the albums of/from "Substrata", "Microgravity" or
"Patashnik"..... all biospheres stuff is genious, but
Subsrata is the best ambient album ever, better than SAWII
by just a little bit.

Ofcoure try SAWI and SAWII which I think you said you have.

Try out A guy called "Lustmord" its really dark ambient,
very very very good. Try to look for the album, "The
Monstrous Soul" or even "Heresy". The first ones better
though.

Try out some William Orbit, best albums to look at are
"Strange Cargo 3" and "Pieces In A Modern Style". Both
great. Especially try out a William Orbit song called "Water
From A Vine Leaf".

REALLY look for The Orbs "Orbus Terrarum", Amazing ambient
Cd, straight up. Other Orb is great to check out to, amazing
Dub/Ambient stuff.

IF you want like Noise stuff kinda like ambient, no beat ..
noise. heh. Uh try out the noise king himself "Merzbow".

Try out FSOL's "Path 1-7" or "My Kingdom" for some great
ambient shit.

Also look at some "Coil" its really good ambient stuff, not
all of it is ambient, but lots of his stuff is. For starters
try "How to play in the Dark" or "Windowpane and The
Snow"... and go from there.

For a simple NIN song try "A Warm Place", the only nin
Ambient song really, but its fuckin great.

I know Im missing something but what..... oh well, take
this advice youll find tons of amazing ambient. Trust
me.

i think some of the NIN - Still bonus cd had some really
nice ambient tracks:
"adrift and at peace", "gone;still", "the persistence of
loss", and "leaving hope".

SAWI/SAWII are amazingly genius like 892 other people
said....
i haven't heard any Biosphere yet

As Reflex said, Lustmord is great. My personal favourite by
him is "An early document of tactile experiments" brilliant
dark (although lustmord claims his stuff isn't dark, but
then again so does Snares, so I guess we can discount that
argument...) subterranean ambience.

well, I'm not a big fan of ambient... but Eno is good... I
have On Land, and it's quite nice... haven't listened to it
in a while though...

BUT, and this cd does have lots of beats and percussion, the
most amazing ambient cd I've ever heard (and I do kind of
classify it as ambient as it just takes me away, and creates
visual images in my mind) is Passion by Peter Gabriel...
it's amazing music... it's a soundtrack, so it's supposed to
fit certain settings in a movie, and it does so perfectly...
I can listen to this, and I'm in a desert, in the middle
east somewhere, in a little bazaar type thing in some
village, the music creates these images so perfectly... and
along with this there is always an emotional aspect to it...
throughout the course of the cd you go through all emotions,
yet end on a hopeful note... it's beautiful stuff!

you might say "I hate Peter Gabriel" or whatever... but
don't brush this album off before hearing it... it's totally
different from his other stuff, with the exception of The
Long Walk Home, which is along the same lines, and is
another movie soundtrack... it's my favorite album of all
time!! Check it out...

I don´t want to postorder anything right now, so I think
Susumo Yokota, Biosphere, Plastikman and Oval is something I
could find in a shop near me. I hope I made the right
choice. But I will go into more underground ambient later...
Maybe I also check out the Orb tho I thoucht that to be
Ambient House. And tho Little Fluffy clouds is beutifull
it´s kinda silly.
Lustmord also sounds nice but I probobly wont find him...
