Talib Kweli's solo album Quality from last year
is amazing.

it's not "experimental". it's not exclusively for
backpackers or poets. it's not gangsta, jiggy, or techno.
it's just good music and intelligent lyrics for fans of
everyone from sage francis to biggie to enjoy. you can
probably still get it brand new at Best Buy for $7.99
(or 11.99 online). appearances from mos def, black thought of
the roots, pharoahe monch, and producers like MHz and jay
dee.

I have heard many good things about this album, actually

it's just a good album and i think people would enjoy it.
not everything has a sinister meaning. i could talk about
how much i like the new autechre or aphex but 200 other
people are already doing that. i like to mention stuff that
others don't bring up but is just as good (not that everyone
will like it equally, of course). check out the album guys,
it's good.

I didn't care for it really.. i dunno.. just not my cup of
tea.

but why? i think it finds a good balance between the
underground and overground. it's intelligent and profound,
yet approachable. it doesn't go out of its way to obscure or
alienate. it's deals with relevant issues--fatherhood, gun
violence, showing commitment to a relationship, global
politics, poverty, partying, and showing off extreme lyrical
talent. i really can think of few albums that represent
hip-hop in its entirety any better than quality. it's
like black star meets ready to die in
grittiness and flow, aquemini in organic funk, and
it takes a nation of millions to hold us back in raw
truth. if that's not a recipe for a dope album i don't know
what is.

i think it's the balance that is the turn-off for me.

sorry you didn't like it...

i guess to clarify, i definitely wouldn't recommend this
album to anyone who just wants one type of thing.. there's a
lot of variety on the album, lyrical and musical. not quite
as classic as the black star album but a 4.5/5 album in my
opinion!

you know tits, I have to say, that first single from the
album is kicking... Get By or something... kick ass song...
I might even consider buying this one! :)

woo, let's hear it for the funkmaster official endorsement!

"get by" is a great (2nd) single for sure. a song with a
great beat and a great message (get off your ass).

Woah, I didn't realise he had a new record out! :| grrr!
It's on my wish-list now for sure! If "Reflection Eternal /
Train of Thought" is anything to go by, this will be
immense!

"And I'll say it again / I need a brand new friend / the
end."

I just downloaded the pre-release mp3s and I'm listening to
it now - sounds good - I'll buy it when I have the Jack
Flash.

I loved the first buzz single "good to you" .. I love kanye
west even though that and much of his other works are very
wu/rza-derivative.. but at least that kind of sound is being
encouraged in an otherwise shitty and homogenized industry

a few of my friends were telling me how good this was.. but
some of them said the same thing about 'the private press'
and many other sub-par-to-average hiphop albums in recent
years.

I dont know. I just assumed that w/ this being his first
major solo release that he'd compromise a lot of what drew
me towards liking him in the [early]reflection
eternal/mood/black star era.. is that the case titsworth?

isnt there some shitty dj quik(!?!?) produced mistake on
there that ruins it though?

WOW - would you really venture to say that someone who
listens to sage francis would POSSIBLY like an album feat
these people:

mos def, black thought of
the roots, pharoahe monch, and producers like MHz and jay
dee.

thats an interesting argument

euphonicfilter, we already discussed your snobby views on
hip-hop in the common 'electric circus' thread. stay the
fuck out of this one, and p.s. eat a dick cookie.

theo, kweli didn't compromise nada, but if you're expecting
to hear hi-tek style dirty funk you'll be disappointed...
there isn't a single hi-tek production here. lyrically it
touches on a lot more than he talked about on the first 2
albums but you'll enjoy tracks like "the proud", "joy",
"where do we go", and "won't you stay" coming from that
perspective. just don't expect him not to talk about other
things and in other styles (like i mentioned above). if you
like "good to you" that's a good sign. (i like the dj quik
collaboration a lot myself...)
