Ceri, actually, it is widely known that a curved tonearm as
on the technics 1200/1210 turntable provides better sound
quality than the straight tone arm of the vestax pdx2000
series.

Keeping better time is also non-sense, since they are both
quartz locked at 0%pitch and not quartz locked at +/-
pitches, and neither use (to my knowledge) super accurate
'oven-crystals' anyway, due to the prohibitive costs.

Oh and the vestax are lighter cos they are more flimsy and
not build like a tank like the techs.

And as for upgrades, what would an upgrade be? changing the
LEDs to a different colour? The only upgrade which one is
likely to do is change to lamp bulb, which I admit is easier
on the vestax.
Sorry for being picky, but vestax decks aren't the 'be all
and end all', techs are built like a tank, and will last
forever (literally).

I won't go into the sound quality debate, because we could
go on about it for hours and not agree :)

I don't know whether it's just specific to the mk2s, but it
is well documented that 1210s & 1200s are susceptible to
(very slight) pitch waver when at 0%. In fact, I think the
correction of this bug was one of the "features" in the
marketing blurb for mk3s...

re: lightness- they're made from ABS (the same stuff as car
dashboards), which aside from being lighter, dampens
acoustic vibrations, not only reducing record skip when too
close to speakers, but reducing motor noise/hum (and in
turn, improving sound quality). As someone who worked with
ABS for months on their DT project at A-level, I know they
wouldn't of selected it for the ease of working with it
(it's an absolute swine to get it to mould properly/work
with it generally)!
ABS is also, contrary to popular belief, very durable,
especially when used as thickly as it is in the vestax
cases. I completely agree with you that Technics are far and
away the most durable "work horse" decks out there, but for
studio work or if you're taking your own with you to gigs,
it's not really an issue.

Just to answer your question re: upgrades, aside from the
LED changing (which aside from being a modding option, do
sometimes need replacing) that inset bit I focus on in the
picture in post [#01073958] is easily removable and allows
upgrades to be made. Currently, you can get a kit that
changes it to the new PDX-2300 (jog joystick, pitch scale
control, bpm, etc.) and I imagine when the 2300 mk2s come
out, there'll be a kit to change it to that too (aside from
the lower platter). There's also the matter of user
replaceable cables (both earth and audio) which also lend
themselves to user servicing.

Don't get me wrong, I like Technics and they're great decks.
I just think that their reputation as the "rolls royce" of
the turntable world is outdated, slightly innaccurate and
(now) based largely on brand name reputation and popular
opinion, rather th

rather than the merits of the turntables themselves.

BTW, the 06 is great- I'd used a normal one briefly before
to check I like the shape and I far prefer it to 10" ones
for scratching and beat juggling, thanks for the
recommendation :)

The cut in time is fantastic on it although they could of
reduced the run needed to hit the start of the curve by a
millimeter and a half or so (your washer mod has me
interested...) now I've had it for over a week an the
initial "wow" factor has died down, it's great, but I can't
help feel it's not worth (the new) price. I managed to get
mine for £345, but now it seems it's at least £445
everywhere... I suspect the price hike was by vestax, an odd
response to the threat of the TTM-56 ;) So, my advice would
be, they're great and if you can get one at the old price,
they're worth it, but the features are a bit lacking to
justify one after the £100 price increase.
