Is it just me or is this a disturbing new trend in modern society? Children are being 'sexualised' from an early age. The media is crammed with 13-14 year olds behaving like 18-20s. There are series where 12 years olds have 'relationship problems'. I took a look over at the other day to see what new movies are due and at least two dealt with this. One was a 14-15 year old getting taught how to pick up women by his uncle or something and the other one was about a 15 year old in a hidden affair with a 30 something. It's really disturbing the heck out of me. How can one raise a kid/kids in a society which molds these innocents from such an early age, infusing them with extreme materialism, sex and promiscuosity(sp?)? Jeez. |

yep - i know that the world is really getting fucked up when my friend's 12 year old sister has to tell all the boys at her school to fuck off becuase they want to fuck her - i mean, cmon! when i was 12 i was worried about wheter or not ill get to play sega genesis when i get home, this is fucking absurd! but then again... i'm a 15 year old having sex regularily... but at least it is safe-sex with my girlfriend... |

It seems as though the ageing process is speeding up. And the average lifetime is lengthening. Children have no safe place away from media and the horrors of life, with the advance of technology everyone is connected, by age, gender, culture, etc. and I think this results in the Sexualisation of Children among other things. |

yeah... it has a lot to do with that children are a target group for corporations who want THEM to consume. This is done by media... but there's a lot more involved. |

I think the sexualization in children's lives is much more cheapened than it was once, but it's actually not at all a new thing. I did a lot of research on this in the past semestre, and I found it interesting to note that the concept of a distinct 'childhood' is really a rather recent develoupment in human history. Previously, children would grow up in a world of very overt, though natural, sexuality. The more disturbing trend today is the mixed message and double standard involved. Children are exposed to sexual material so young but now they're not expected to be sexually active for a good 8-10 years after they're told by their culture that it's a good thing for them. |

for those who want to read more (not that you should stop here) this is one of the things that bothers me most. for the last 9 months i've been working in a community center in a poor mostly black part of town and it's just so sad to see all the young kids (of all races) know and see too much for their age. i'm sure girls have always imitated their older sisters in fashion and other things, but it's just gotten so extreme nowadays. |

The develoupment issue's a bad one, isn't it? Girls become fertile up to 14 years before society will condone a pregnancy. It's a long time for many girls to guard themselves when they're being bombarded by the sort of messages out there. But I'm very curious, since this is a predominantly male board, what kind of effects does it have on the childhood of boys? There's much less information about this. Are young boys as pressed into an early sexuality? |

i wouldn't worry about 150 years ago a girl would get married as soon as she could drip blood as a matter of survival - with improvements in health and the welfare stae etc attitides changed and childhood was pretty much invented - see willke collins etc - also the pre-raphalite paintings that concentrate on the idea of the fallen woman |

And it's also as someone pointed out fashion. Children don't wear child-like clothes anymore. They prance around in skimpy little outfits before their breasts have even started developing. It's all so vulgar, so worrying. Good point about the past. Women used to get married as soon as there were able to bear children. It seems like the sexualisation of children is moving in a somewhat hyperbolic pattern. We hit what I would call 'normal' a few decades ago and now were back on the descent. Of course this is a big generalisation. I'm sure a fair percentage of children through the years have been active early but it's all the more apparent now. Why must children be ripped from their innocent, carefree ways so early? What kind of a fucking perverse society is this? Gahhh humanity sucks. |
