Roll Call/AE Contest Voting Problem

Who here agrees that all Xltronic members who enter into
this remix contest should, immediately upon submitting their
2 remixes, lose eligibility in the voting process, so as to
avoid the inevitable bias that comes with being an active
participant and arbiter?

I certainly do. I see no reason why anyone who knows the
composer of any work in the contest should be allowed to
vote.

It should also be known that all participants can create new
accounts and submit 4, 6, 8 +etc remixes, making the
policies adopted by the administators at this board
blatently fallible.

Also, all those who are working on remixes for this contest
should state their names here, and whether they are for or
against the voting privilage for those participating in this
contest. Do this so that Phobiazero etc. know that there
will be more than enough people willing to vote on this that
are not music makers.

i'm submitting a mix
i see where you are coming from and if need be i don't care
if i get to vote.

i dont think though that creating extra accounts to submit
more songs will be much of a problem. i think this because,
how many QUALITY tracks can one person come up with in under
a month's time? its taken me 2 weeks to get to where i am
with my ONE track and i still don't consider it finished.

however creating extra accounts for making extra votes seems
like it could be a problem. also, how do we know that the
admin/crew aren't being biased picking the 15 quality
tracks? are the tracks annonymous to them when they
choose?
and maybe this is an obvious question, but do the crew get
to submit tracks?

offline theo himself from +- on 2003-04-10 15:43 [#00643568]

that would be a huge problem.. I dont need more than a few
hours to come up w/ the basis for a track.. one person has
the potential to create 16 tracks.. all 15 could be chosen
by the "people" (8 of those people being himself) and the
16th could be chosen by autechre.. it's not probable, but it
is possible; and it shouldnt be

Interesting gesture Theodore. You bring up some good
points.

However, I do believe that those who spend time and effort
manipulating the system in place are doing so out of fear of
inadequacies, and that these actions are a sign of the
shortcomings in their skill. In otherwords, the people
signing up for multiple accounts would have no chance of
winning anyway.

With that said, again, I think you bring up some good
points. An I'll play by whatever rules put in place by the
administration.

I am remixing a track.

I agree with that, though the option to cheat is not one
exclusive to the inept. some might consider gaining an edge
over those who might choose dishonest ways of competing in
addition to everyone else involved. like "well, remix one
and two are pretty much my strongest.. but since these other
kids have about 90 accounts each, why don't I set up another
just in case remixes three and four might strike certain
people a different way"

keep this up top. I want to compile a list of all those
participating

good points, im gonna try and enter 1 track, if i manage to
get it finished, dont fancy my chances much but hey ho there
u go. I gotta echo whats already been said... i find it hard
to beleive and highly irritating that some1 can come up with
more than 2 decent tracks within a month, altho its quite
feasable they could take an old track and 'mix in' a few ae
samples, i know i considered it and im sure others have too.

I already finished one, and hopefully will do another. I'm
pretty sure "selected members of the crew" are already the
designated voters. None of us commonfolk can take part in
such complex political events. What if ophecks is a voter
though? Then the track that sounds most like the beatles
will win? Poor autechre...

i think that "the selected members of the crew" picks the
top15 and then everybody can vote on those.

no.. because the 'people's choice' is determined by xltronic
voter participation the top 15 is based on that.. either way
though, nothing should be left up to the artists to
determine

not only is that completely unfounded, but common sense
would tell you that not every single autechre fan here is a
musician and furthermore that not every musician/autechre
fan is entering into this contest. even with that group
removed from the voting process, there are plenty of people
here who know autechre well enough and are interested in
hearing fan contributions.. and those who don't like
autechre, I'm sure, have discerning musical tastes and
preferences (hence their being at this site) that would make
them relative experts or at least reasonably knowledgable of
this music whereby they could choose a favorite from the
pool of submissions

offline theo himself from +- on 2003-04-11 04:43 [#00644491]

ceri I see that. but as much as that would be good for me
and other participants, limiting the competition that is,
I'd feel bad barring anyone from an opportunity this rare
and this great. it is annoying that some people's time spent
at xltronic will span from the contest's announcement to its
conclusion, but no one should exclude any fans or ambitious
up-and-comers from something like this.

but ceri, as a moderator do you know specifically how the
voting is going to work? where the mp3s will be hosted, and
whether there is an initial, xlt crew vote to determine the
15 choices, then a subsequent vote to crown the best of the
15 by the rest of the board?

if you're on aim right now im me tho.. theorq31

by the way.. if you haven't noticed.. following the
rationale that most are using to counter the 'multiple
accounts = multiple remix entries' concern.. that being that
should one have the ability to submit more than two tracks,
the likeliness of thier success in this competition is
immediately limited ..(an inverse correlation between amount
of submissions and their chances of winning either or both
prizes).. then why should there be a limit on the amount of
allowable remix submissions to begin with? after all, if one
chooses to spend the same amount of time on 4 or 5 remixes
that another participant spends on 1 or 2 remixes, the
chances of the latter participant are far greater than those
of the former. so, if one chooses to damn himself by
producing more than 2, he should be allowed to as it would
increase the chances of those whose focus was primarily
focused on a lesser amount of tracks.

eh?

Since there'll be so many remixes, eventually the voters
will play only 1/4 of the track to determine if it sucks or
not. I can usually tell if I like it by then anyway.

hey, thought i'd chime in a bit...

i submitted 1 track for the remix comp, but im still looking
forward to the voting.. so i really hope im not immediately
disqualified from that... maybe if only the top 15 people
werent allowed to vote, or they just werent allowed to vote
for themselves... since i was under the impression that
"Xltronic will pick the Top 15 tracks in aspect of quality.
Tracks not qualified into the Top 15 will be available for
download after the contest has
ended" meant that certain xltronic members would pick the
top 15 members and then only those would be available to
download and vote on... correct me if im wrong tho...

oh ya and who's to say that a person cant write 5 good
tracks in a month? i know that if i had enough free time
i'd be capable...
