who here likes songs with real actual lyrics? and if so,
whats wrong with you? it has occured to me that far too many
of you are turning to the dark side (or have come from the
dark side and like to reminise) and listen to genres of
music that have lyrics...even tho you listen to healthy
music like aphex twin as well. why is this, you so confusing
to me!

because a human voice can also be beautiful.

can even be more beautiful than any other sound, if you know
that it is actually produced by a human.

That's another possible reason.
or another part of the reason.

music is music. if its well written and sung(pink floyd,
beatles, radiohead, bjork, a hell of a lot of hip hop music)
then i have no problem with lyrics.
and if you honestly cast aside genres of music because you
don't like the human voice than you're a fucking idiot.

it's not like you have to choose... sometimes you listen to
instrumental music, sometimes to something with vocals. I
don't really prefer one over the other.

Altough i'll admit at first i only listened to alternative
rock-music, and i was very worried i would find instrumental
music boring. I just thought lyrics were so important... i
wasn't sure music w/out lyrics would be able to hold my
attention.

Kept me from listening to postrock for some months (even
though the reviews i read about it sounded interesting). But
then one day i just bought a mogwai-cd... :-)

I always listened to electronic music(techno, hardcore) then
I found electronica.
Then I found this board, and heard people speak of
Radiohead, saying how good they are,so I borrowed Kid A from
my Dad.I always hated guitar music/lyrics,but a couple
listens of Radiohead,I fell in love.

im not opposed to the human voice - in fact i love any song
that has a lot of voice samples in it - but i just cant see
whats so great about having so many songs all basically
sounding the same to me, singing on about love and heartache
and crap...

well, once again, not all songs consist of those two or
three themes.
i do understand shifting moods and how they can correlate to
what kind of music you like. i have long periods of time
where i only listen to instrumental music. but in the end,
the human voice is an instrument in itself and i won't cast
its use aside simply because a lot of music focusing on it
is shallow or not as good as the instrumental stuff i listen
to.

Yeah but instrumentals, can all be the same.

why wouldn't i listen to instrumentals and music with
lyrics?

i don't hate humans that much, you know.

I prefer music without words, but I still like nine inch
nails and a lot of other music that has words. I listen to
stuff without words more though.

There is something about the sound of another human voice
that makes a personal connection unlike anything else.
Music dosn't need lyrics to be great, but some of the
greatest music ever created contains lyrics. Being able to
communicate a direct message to the listener can almost only
be done with lyrics, and that is a great thing. Sometimes
it's great to be able to get your own meaning of the music,
and that's why I love electronica so much, it appeals to the
imagination. But, overall, both forms of music (lyrical and
non-lyrical), can be just as great as the other.

Lyrics are a dangerous thing for me... I hate most of them,
a lot of songs make me cringe. But if someone writes good
lyrics, then there's nothing better.

There's also a lot of voices that annoy me...

I mostoly listen to instrumental, but I don`t hate a song
just because it has lyrics...

him....I'm in his same situation...

Now what about people that don`t like music if tehy don`t
have lyrics?

it depends who's singing and writing the lyrics pretty much.
some people write awful lyrics to go over awful
songs......

and some people write marvelous ones.

first off.. . its not a song unless its got vocals.. . a
song needs to be sung.. . if there are no vocals its a track
or a piece.. . sorry.. . its a little peeve of mine.. . cant
stand tracks being called songs. ..

and vocals are so loved because its an all most indulgent
act to listen to them.. . its human and immediate therefore
instantly gratifying unlike instrumental music where you
have to be able to listen to and understand the main parts
to get something out of it. ..

best vocal music in my opinion is choir type music.. . or
vocalisations without words. ..

though I love Pearl Jam and stuff like that. ..

tay (either way)

it depends. i couldn't imagine a lot of IDM would be
suitable for lyrics, but i could be wrong on some occasions.
i've been more open-minded about lyrics lately, so when i
want good lyrics, i go for the hip-hop; dr. octagon or
funkstörung in particular.

i dunno. i think it all depends on what the lyrics are
about.

I like them sometimes. There are some beautiful singing
voices out there, and lyrics sometimes add powerful depth to
a song, giving it more emotion than would be possible with
instruments alone.

i made this post because after finding good music without
lyrics i couldnt go back to songs with lyrics, not that i
listened to many in the first place...i assumed when i came
here that all aphex fans would think the same way, but you
dont...ive tried to be open minded about your opinions, but
the constant references to how good you think certain rock
songs are is really annoying me.

glitch- i agree that songs have lyrics and instrumentals are
tracks or pieces, i didnt mean to imply otherwise...

xlr- i can never consider any voice as
'beautiful'...interesting or catchy perhaps...

anus- no its not a joke :P

i'm such an avid fan of distorted vocals.

I HATE the lyrics/vocals on that DMX Krew mix on 26MFC
though, it ruins the song for me.
