don't mean ableton live or traktor.
i mean something i can use external turntables. is there
anything like this ? i mean aphex makes his live mixes on a
laptop, with vinyls. i heard he's using pro tools...

Well... This is a translated snippet from the live-review
from aphex live show in Oslo:

http://www.nattguiden.no/reportasjer/1014

The most interesting part of it, I think...

"Well, the last you would expect from an innovator like
Aphex is a trip down nostalgia-lane but for all those who
misses 1992 Blå was the place to be yesterday. The promised

"laptop-set" was executed with "Final Scratch" connected to

a PC loaded with Mp3's and most of it was old acid house
with some added (moan) gabber. I've seldom been so
disappointed.."

LOL! :)

i'm pretty sure you can use ableton live 2 maybe even
with traktor dj.

otherwise final scratch might be what you're looking for -
but that's getting pretty upper end.

otherwise stick with a hardware mixer :)

dude ... as far as i know protools is pretty much a
studio/mastering piece of software. its got a good
reputation (in conjunction with hardware) because the audio
editing is well wicked (ie. timestretch etc.). compared to
cubase and logic, its piss poor in midi though!

protools "could" be used for mixing, but that would be
pretty crude, and you may as well use cubase for that!?

but maybe there is some protools plug-in or something that
i'm totally unaware off --- ? IF protools is used for mixing
i'm sure you'd find stuff about it @ digidesign.com? i
somehow doubt it though!

from what i remember, rdj uses ableton, in conjunction with
a hardware mixer and a turntable for his sets?! maybe also
final scratch on top of all that?

ableton .... hm
if there would be a sampler in it built in would be cool.
i don't mean a sampler like kontakt. but like a sampler on a
mixer. you record a bit, then loopt it...

Pro Tools is well known because they have the best hard disc
recording system w/ the best sample rates.
But this is all preformed by external rack peices. Pro Tools
also makes a sequencing program to go with this, but so do a
number of othe companies. It is all personal pref. A ferw
other companies are cubase, MOTU digital performer, Vision
DSP etc.
They all work perfectly with the pro tools hard disc
recorders.

as far as I know nothing in Pro Tools is set up to do
anything live w/ turntables

difficult to explain :) so, i want exactly a thing like in a
technics pioneer djm-600 mixer is. you have a nice yellow
button. you push that button, it records a sound from the
turntable of your choice. you pull the button, it stops
recording and imediately starts repeating it over and
over... you have some knobs to change attack, length and
other parameters. i search for something like this in
software form.

I dont know about any thing in software form that does this,
but you could run your mix through a phrase sampler which
does exactly that, loops live peices of sound on the fly.
It also lets you build on top of other loops without
deleating the old one, so you can build a whole song out of
parts in theory.
