Messageboard dividing?

I think Blipseeds suggestion about dividing the board
deserves it's own topic. Have the webmasters any thoughts
about this? Has it been suggested before? I don't have time
to be on this board all the time, and can't read all the
threads. But the MB have opened my eyes for a lot of new
artists and new music. These days I find it hard tracking
the useful music-info without spending too much time here.
What do you guys think? Are there any negative consequences?

Dividing it? into the Jets and the Sharks?

I prefer it all together like now, I have the experience of
loopz and watmm

and thought they are great boards, I prefer this one

maybe the usefull topics should be put on top of the others,
i mean the most recent interesting stuff, no need to go
search old music suggestions,...
we should always have at least 5 good threads on top.
see my point? and let the crazy stuff under, would be very
pleasant that way

but it's hard to decide which thread are important, it's all
about opinions,
phob may find the pre-order threads important whereas i
don't,
i may find e.g. a thread about björks new release
important, but many others won't care about it

who's gonna decide what's important?

A part with music-threads only would be excellent IMO.

Nacmat: You have the experience with WATMM. Isn't it good
that they have an own part called "expert knob twiddlers"
where the people can discuss each others music/projects?

Dividing it would be pointless. The way it is now is that
everyone can see every thread easily. Split it up and you
have to go into each section. Needless clicking. This is all
my opinion. I actually opened this thinking you were talking
in the sense of people ganging up.

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-03-26 05:03 [#00617211]

Dunno bout splitting it - though there certainly is a fast
turn-over rate and repetition going on.

Maybe altering the favourites function a tad eg. say 5
favourites, but instead of having to search for them - they
will always be at the top as glass_eater suggested. Probably
be a programming nightmare. Just a thought though.

i wasnt even thinking of two pages, just the needfull on top
with a line or nothing between the sections, and to see wich
topic is really music related is not that hard imo

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-03-26 05:03 [#00617213]

... cont.

That way the 5 (or so) favourite topics are personalised ??

no, the topics on top are decided by mods or phob, or the
person in charge at the moment i dont know, that shouldnt be
so hard to do

offline George_Kaplan on 2003-03-26 05:08 [#00617219]

you could always have colour coding. that way its all in the
same place but with diff clrs for diff topic 'types' .
best of both worlds?

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-03-26 05:08 [#00617220]

but then you have the problem if a new "hot" topic arises,
it will struggle with all the other ones.

we'll see ... i'm all for a personalised "topics on top"
though.

changing forum all the time...

this way is like more cosmopolitan... more mixture, more
dinamic, more alive

yes what glass eater said but personalised, like the
favourites instead of being in another page being always on
top... thats nice... but, possible?

ahah eureka !!!!!
you could do a different section when submitting the
threads. if you think the thread is usefull submit it in the
red section, then a program takes all the red threads and
put them up randomly
no? why?

"you could always have colour coding. that way its all in

"

^ what he said. have a certain number of posts locked at the
top, of which say the "red/bold" ones are personal, and the
"black/bold" ones assigned by phob and the crew? such as
news RE: the board, releases, polls or whatever.

Be a nice added feature, dunno how difficult it would be to
do - plus it'd keep it in the minimalist and user-friendly
kind of vain, and not too cluttered.

;)

The color coding's a decent idea. The only other way I'd
want it split is to put all the "my new tracks" threads into
a different section, cause they either tend to disapear
quite quickly or I just completely forget about them as I'm
posting in something else.

have clrs for topics and a personal clr for faves?
then u can sort by any clr as well.
maybe?

offline George_Kaplan on 2003-03-26 05:25 [#00617249]

maybe 5 clrs just for personal faves use, the rest for topic
types?

just thinking aloud here ..

instead of having "threads" my new tracks - could have a
list of recently released tracks by members, hyperlinked ..
or something. + have a database of songs/links in the
personal profile.

on the other hand, threads are all good.

G_Kaplan ... dunno i think 5 colours could get a bit
cluttered - and what about all those colour blind people?!
:)

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-03-26 05:30 [#00617260]

On the otherhand - I'm sure Phob et. al. have something
sorted - up their sleeve perhaps?

Spring eh ... long way away from where I am.

wouldnt be confusing for me anyway

I know the messageboard almost certainly won't be split
anyway, Phob has said many times in the past he won't do it.
Like korben said, xltronic proper will probably answer a lot
of these questions.

good old warpcomm used to have colour-coded topics - you
know, grey/white for autechre, yellow for aphex etc.

everybody used the colours for everything. it became a big
mess.

and for the 5 music-topics on top thing - mods hardly have
the time to read each topic and then determine which ones
are important enough.

Too much form kills function and breeds cynicism.

Therefore, the board won't change.
