How do you describe Idm/Electronica to a friend?
I find it really hard to describe.

indeed!
I tell them to think of all the music they know and makes it
together till you get this really braindancing music.

First of all I don't call it Intelligent Dance Music. That
makes me think of nerds having spasms. Which is actually
what it is if you think about it.

I don't try to describe it. I put on a CD and let people
find out for themselves that they don't like it.

~@#&*+*/*#§\!=,±`... it's too varied to have a fully
satisfying description i think.

i could describe autechre, squarepusher, venetian snares,
individually... but not really idm (and, in fact, not even
aphex twin).

maybe, generally undanceable electronic music?

Yes but if you don't have a cd......

I would say it sounds like manic depressive robots jolting
their pleasure centers with electrical cables, and sometimes
they play videos of children's shows to remind themselves of
what the world was like when there were humans alive.

and by all means: intelligent DANCE? I couldn't think of a
more misleading word myself.

I usually say advanced electronica or something; but that
sounds cheezy too

well how would you describe rap-music? Or rock-music? :-p

Fact is you can't properly describe music with words alone,
you need to hear it.

I use to call it "electronic freejazz". Experimental,
doesn´t follow any rules, and can sound anyhow.

considering so much music gets generalised as idm, how can
you decribe it.
for example, boards of canada hardly sound like
squarepusher, huh?

hmmm....to give a perfect description of IDM is impossible,
the genre is just too complex but I'd say

electronic music with an experimental element, often
non-repetitive....err.....that was about it for today I
think

I see this music as progessive, and experimental.

proggressive trance....

it's music made by noodle armed choir buys that feel like
they are doing something new, when all these 'experiments'
were done better 60 years ago with primitive tone modules.
