much to the chagrin of older trainspotters, and to the
delight of the new school of listeners, comes the
(near-complete) anthology of aphex twin remixes. while
b-side 12"s are depreciating as we speak, we can all replace
our worn cassette compilations of most of these remixes, and
get a few treats that were extremely hard to come by.
long the ernst lubitsch of modern electronic music, this
collection represents a diverse selection of original
artists' work, each deconstructed and re-built through
varied methods of musical talent. with speculation that this
was more of an excuse not to deliver a proper album to warp,
and therefore get closer to the close of the album
agreement, this still comes across as a thoughtful
compendium; well-packaged and classy looking. stripped down
design lets the content speak through more than any gimmicky
cover art, yet the double digi-pack is divine.

onto the subject matter. listening to the seefeel track, and
kinesthesia, in fact, listening to most of these tracks
leaves me with a languid, dated feel. not necessarily
because they are so, but i can pinpoint (for the most part)
when i first heard these tracks, and where they stand in
terms of my developing an ear for modern electronic music. i
credit aphex for most of the directions that my musical
taste went from, and hearing this is kind of a refresher
course into how good that everything originally sounded.
while countless imitators have surfaced over the years, its
really true that no one has come close to reproducing the
very specific aphex sound that just continually works, in a
myriad of formats and styles. i'd be curious to see how
these tracks sounded to those who had never heard the
material, and if it would sound really fresh, really new.
but certainly for me, the reason that i love these discs is
that it represents this mid-1990's and beyond feel, that
reminds me of how much influence this music has had on my
life, and the amount of time and effort put into it.

bit i digress, once again. these remixes come a

bit i digress, once again. these remixes come across more
like original compositions, and most of the time, vastly
improving on the original versions, if they end up using any
of the original at all. the one disappointment comes from
the omission of the beck remix, 'richard's hairpiece', which
was denied permission by presumably geffen. other than that,
the 'afx slow mix' of seefeel is missing, as well as a few
other things. practically everything that was really
difficult to find is included here.

the previously unreleased material includes a new (acid)
edit of 'windowlicker' and the original mix of 'saw2 cd1 trk
2', which was only formerly heard on the second aphex peel
session. overall, it is an overwhelming package, tons of
material that is fondly remembered, and some tracks will be
newly discovered. in any event, these 2 discs will certainly
delight any listener that appreciates the most important
contributor to modern electronic composition.
