i kinda wanted to post to this since me and kcinsu have a history of vast hatred and i have nothing really to do right now. i also wanted to make sure my .nu account was still around. so here are a few points: 1. commenting logically and meaningfully (you know, criticism) on music does not require that you're a musician yourself. there's plenty of precedent, in academic or in "pop" circles, for good-ass critics who are JUST critics. TH's tracks surely don't light my ass on fire but i thought the general gist of his comments was right on. 2. it's up to every musician to decide for themself how much or how little they are going to care about what other people say about them. you KNOW that if you name a track "the era of the prophets, blah blah..." that some peeps are gonna be rubbed the wrong way, especially when it isn't immediately arrestingly awesome. not that it's a bad track, but it's gotta be hella good to "justify" that title, imo. otherwise it just comes off as wank. if you truly make up your mind that "i don't care what other people think," then fine, name it whatever the hell you want. but then you've got to really be prepared to NOT CARE when people who may or may not know their shit diss you on a stupid bbs. 3. kcinsu music isn't bad but i'm having trouble really getting into it. part of it is idm snobbery (some of the pad patches remind me of the 'synth' section on my sister's old korg electric piano thingy), and part of it is... i'm not sure that i can dig "ambient" music in that sense. it's not grounded enough for me. what i mean is, the "ambient" music that i like (music for airports, sawii, reich) is stuff that is repetitious, pulsating, and very centered like, thematically. i know that i could sit down at a keyboard and just record 4 or 5 tracks of me jamming in D minor on various pad patches and have something that sounded, to me, dangerously close to a kcinsu track. NOT that a kcinsu track is easy to make or shoddy, but... i dunno. try som |

hey i got cut off! continued: "but... i dunno. try some chord changes, maybe? i get a feeling of "this melody could be anywhere in this track and still fit" when i hear a kcinsu track. 4. i don't think autechre comparisons make sense at all. again, it's that interlocking feeling i get. every bit in an ae track seems to be 'talking' to every other bit, and it's all so mysterious (draft7.30 is on right now). in 'red flower,' i can imagine myself tweaking the very same plugins to make some of those sounds. which is distracting, and just indicative of not really enough 'mysterious distance' from the dsp we are all familiar with (an integral component to enjoying ae, imo). -pete ascdi (yes i know my tracks are also kinda mediocre. see #1) " ps... about TH's comments being right in #1... i meant his original first post of criticism, not the rest of the degenerating wank ones. thanks peeps. |

I would like to thank you ascdi, for actually writting a respectful criticism. See theo? You can still write everything you want to say, and not be an asshole about it. Did you see any put downs etc there? No. Ascdi just earned alot of respect from me for that. |
