haha, this just reminds about all the funny homosexual rules
in the marilyn manson book. like 10 of them refer to the
smiths, like saying you were gay if for example you slept
with a girl who liked morissey, you ever had sex listening
to the smiths, you ever had a haircut like morissey. never
listened to em much but theyre decent.

You would not believe what The Smoths mean't to me...my
first love before E took it's hold and I was turned into a
Acid House/Aphex fan- boy...

I had such a crush on Moz....still do, I guess...:)..

Been listening to to em a lot more and I can remeber every
single lyric...

Hvae you read any books on em?...there are a couple...The
Jonny Rogan one and also just published a guide to
everysingle song (called The Songs that chnaged your
life...)...I'll dig some links...

I also was an almost obsessed Smiths/Mozzer fan...Still love
em, but yeah, I DID have the hair and the clothes...Spent
tons of money on singles and Bsides and posters books etc.

( Kiss MY ass Marilyn Manson )

I read the Morrissey/Marr book, not a bad read, kinda slow
in the beginning.
I have a couple more books that are more picture oriented.

They will ALWAYS have a warm place in my heart.

How Soon is Now. They were a great group. I went out with a
girl who loved Morrissey and definately had sex to the
Smiths, so I guess that means i'm gay according to Manson...
but he's a twat.

of their best. Great lyricist. Wonderful frontman. Great
guitarist. One of the best bands of the 80's

Sorry to bump such an old thread (would you believe i
actually used the searchfunction for this? ;-)). But i just
bought "meat is murder" today... and i love it! Oh my god,
it sounds incredible! I love the music, his voice, the
lyrics... everything is just perfect!

I get a feeling there have been alot of
smiths-compilation albums though. I noticed many songs
appear on several cd's in the recordstores. Could someone
list all their "proper" albums please? (meat is murder isn't
a compilation is it?).

Also, which album features "this charming man"? That's the
song i watched on mtv yesterday, and that made me want to
buy a smiths-cd. But i ended up buying this one because it
was the cheapest ;-)

My favourite part is definitly the middle of the
album. "That joke isn't funny anymore" is one of the most
emotional and goosebumpy songs i've ever heard. "How soon is
now" might even be slightly better! I love that song...
"i am human and i need to be loved, just like everybody
else does
"...aaah... beautiful. Probably my biggest
musical discovery this year :-)

One of the last great guitar bands that actually had a solid
back catalogue that didn't consist of merely one album ie.
Stone over-rated Roses and Oashit.

"this charming man" was not on any albums proper, though it
was added to the u.s. release of the first album. it does
appear, of course, on some of the collections. the version
on "hatful of hollow" is a radically different radio session
version. in the us, a cd single was released containing
seven different versions of "this charming man."

proper albums:

the smiths
meat is murder
the queen is dead
strangeways here we come
rank (live recordings)

collections:

hatful of hollow (radio sessions, singles)
the world won't listen (singles, bsides, leftovers)
louder than bombs (singles,bsides,leftovers)
etc
etc

i saw the smiths at the aragon ballroom in chicago in 1986.
seventeen years ago...

Gotta check that MM books out now...Kinda intrigued by him
as well now after seeing his appearance in Bowling to
Columbine; seemed a real thoughful intelligent guy....

I read somewhere (Boomcat newsletter??) that the Schnieder
TMs synth version of "There is a Light" is about to be
re-released...think it might be remixed as well...

As for a good first Smiths album?...I reckon Hatful of
Hollow is the one; captures that early excitement so very
well...(and contains "Please Please Please" - my personal
fave...but so very very short...)...

Anyone who is into the Smiths should definitely check out
the first two Suede albums ("Suede" and "Dog Man Star") -
they're known as "The London Suede" in the States. Also
check out their B-sides album, "Sci Fi Lullabies".

Admittedly I am forever harping on about them, but they're
frigging amazing, especially DMS. When they released their
first single Morrissey liked it so much that he used to sing
it and one of the B-sides when he played live.

Seriously, check them out, fricking amazing stuff IMO. Dog
Man Star is my favourite album of the 90s if not ever. And
the singer, Brett Anderson, will no doubt appeal to all of
you Morrissey lovers.

The Smiths are a life-saving band, seriously. Morrissey has
done so much for us, and asked for so little.

the term was first coined originally after a cat! One of
