DRAFT 9:30 - First Impressions

had the opportunity to listen to it yesterday (complete and
not just in shitty mp3-"quality"). - as i expected, the
album is not like GANTZ GRAF but very, very quiet, all the
"destructive" behaviour (though "destructive" just describes
AE´s approach to popular music in general, not their
internal way to arrange / use sound) still left on CONFIELD
has nearly vanished. there is a big load of reverb on most
of the tracks, instead of harshness they create a strong
haze of UNCERTAINTY over all the recording. the complexity
of the rhythmic arrangements is even more impressing than on
any record they did before.
overall, you find the elegance and brilliance of CONFIELD
mixed with the open space of AMBER (ok, this is a bit
stupid, but as i wrote - first impression).
what i like the most: the more you try to catch any acoustic
/ structural detail on the record, the less you will get to
know about the music as a whole. another great example that
- against common sense - autechre is not about setting the
world record in "intelligent programming" (which they own
anyway) but about transcending and creating a big, warm ,
pulsating EMOTION.

sean, rob: i love everythingabout every release you did so
far. DRAFT 9:30 will be my best friend for a long time.

My best friends are people I know for real. Sometimes I hang
out with them - drink a beer, smoke a J, gossip, watching
girls but never trying to catch any acoustic / structural
detail on a specific record they made. Strange.

Isn't it draft 7.30 ?

Exactly..

how do you know p2t ; you only have the MP3s.

I can focus on both details and the 'whole' music but I need
to be pretty fucked up. Usually I dream about sean & rob
eating cereals in my bathtube while I'm having a peanut
butter shower. Strange.

how did you get to listen to it in not-mp3?! °_°

confield + amber... my fav Ae albums...
i can't imagine them mixed but it might be good :)

a record can be more reliable than any other friend i ever
had. - ok, on the other hand there might be a problem with
that beer thing. i agree.

I hoping more of the old school sound, or atleast more
melodic but it's deffinatly solid.

i listened to the original tape which has far more warmth
about it than those mp3s (i admit: there is almost nothing i
find more disgusting than that "format", a violation of
music...).
please do not take that confield/amber quote too serious. it
was just a spontaneous thing...

hochen macht freunde is that a reference to arbeit macht
frei.

My favorite german band of today : nena for the fat bass
line of 99 luft ballons

i am not that much into that germany-thing, "arbeit macht
frei" would´n´t be a very funny alias. and: even if you
don´t believe - we have some music over here, and that´s
not just nena. you would not like me to reduce your culture
to some sucker like springsteen... even thoug i was in love
with nena when i was 12 years old.

i felt like a electronica noobie at first

that's how i know AUTECHRE knows how to PUT ME IN MY FUCKING
PLACE... SIT DOWN..YOUVE BEEN SITTED

seriously

i was like "wtf all this shit sounds the same"

then i listened more

then more

now each track, while seemingly very un-distinctive at
first, has grown into a complex, calculating MACHINE

RAWR!

Ha, I refuse to wait. I always buy the Ae release anyway so
what's the biggie?

My first impression: This is my favourite record of all
time. That's my first impression mofos.

yeah, I don't get the "wait till its released"-thing either.
its just as big a surprise now as it would be then.

sound will be better on the released record though.

Oh my yes the cassette tape.. the only true way to listen to
a recording.

I guess it was a rather bold statement to have an opinion on
the album considering i've only heard the mere mp3s..

i've got most of their albums on mp3 including draft 7.30
and no matter hard i try i can't seem get into them. sure
it's intresting to listen to, but many of you are praising
their work as it was the second coming of christ.

AlbertoBalsalm: you?re absolutely right! ; )

...I don?t really think it?s the second coming of christ
(but that was funny!) but "Surripere" itself makes it worth
buying the record...

hahahahaha :)

Here's what I think:
Draft is good, but not really their most memorable. It'll
be overlooked by me, i'm sure. I know it's good, but it's
not great. It has too many "snoring" sounds. It just
sounds like the sounds run their course and then keep coming
up. It's not that great. I feel like I could play an
ambient record, and an industrial record and have monkeys
alternate the volume levels. That, to me, would be an
equivalent listening experience. Time will tell though,
I'll have to hear on CD to get a better feel for it.

I like the earlier stuff like Amber and Incunabula. They
don't make songs like Silverside anymore (i like it alot)

"I feel like I could play an

You got a point there...

It's just the sounds' been done. Sometimes the melodies
come through, other times there's the industrial sorts of
noise. I just really think it's not very magical. Their
other releases (except GG) have a sort of magic to them, in
that there's not so much to them, but the overall impression
is, "wow!" Like a beautiful black and white photo, i guess,
would be the best analogy. only shades of grey, but you can
get a bigger image out of it. And Draft doesn't really do
much but alternate between bits of two things that don't
really take my breath away. The tracks just don't seem to
have the layers.

Please GOD, let Soulseek come back up, haven't heard it
yet.

Don't judge it yet, people... anyone who disses it now will
be in luv with it in a month or two.

Unless... it really isn't great. *gasp

Hey--these are first impressions, I said I could change my
mind when I hear the CD. :)
But for now, in giant two-track form, it's not going to rank
among our favorite's from Sean and Rob. :(
